Yes they can be stranded at home, as in not going on holiday, not being able to leave the house due to ash, stranded at home because they can get essential supplies etc...

Oh come off it, imagine you haven't been on holiday for years, the DC's are excited, you've been saving for months maybe longer, the big day arrives and a bloody volcano erupts.
You won't get any money back or insurance because it's an act of God and it's cost you £100 to get to the airport.
