It's not fair because ...

'... We're supposed to be going on holiday without the children for the first time.'

'... It's my birthday.'

'...I was supposed to be meeting Michelle Obama.'

OK, only half listening so probably misquoted, but that seemed to be the general jist.

So farking what? It's a volcanic cloud, whaddayawanna do about it?!!

yabu

HumphreyCobbler · 15/04/2010 18:39

I know. Do they want to have complete engine failure and CRASH.

lal123 · 15/04/2010 18:39

yabu - I'd be pissed off too

pagwatch · 15/04/2010 18:42

the reason why they were delayed does not make them feel any less disappointed. And someone has just shoved a microphone at them and asked them how they feel about not being able to go where ever they were going.

And several ofthose interviewed that I have heard have said they perfectly understand and it can't be helped etc etc.

YABU and churlish.

I was delayed once for 12 hours when a plane was faulty. It was no ones fault but that didn't make the 12 hours at the airport any less miserable

Joolyjoolyjoo · 15/04/2010 18:42

YANBU- I had to laugh at the woman who moaned "It's ridiculous- the airlines should have some kind of contingency for this!"

Ah yes, item no 4003- in the event of a volcanic eruption...

yanbu.

It's very unfortunate and of course it must be a pita to be stuck anywhere, although at least if you are still in the uk you can go home, but I'd much rather be stranded somewhere than risk dying in a plane crash.

And it's not as if it's anyone's fault.

cupofteaplease · 15/04/2010 18:45

YABU. I am due to fly tomorrow for a much longed-for weekend away with my best friend. I couldn't care less WHY the flight might be cancelled, I still feel peeved about it!

Can you honestly say, even though you fully understand the reasons why, that you would not be even a smidgen disappointed? Really?!

HumphreyCobbler · 15/04/2010 18:45

The people I heard were narky as hell about the airlines.

libelulle · 15/04/2010 18:47

YABU. A friend of mine is going to miss his sister's wedding. Can imagine others visiting dying relatives and not making it - if the whole of Northern European airspace is closed, there's bound to be some pretty harrowing stories. Just because it's unavoidable doesn't mean people have to be happy about it.

Besides, are you really telling me that if you were going off on the holiday of a lifetime (or even, shock horror, one that you'd been looking forward to for months), you wouldn't be just a teensy bit pissed off?! Very easy to say 'so what' when it doesn't concern you personally!

wannaBe · 15/04/2010 18:48

pmsl at contingency.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 15/04/2010 18:49

Don't get me wrong- I have sympathy for the people stranded, I really do..it's just the fact that some of them seem outraged that the airlines didn't do more to prevent it/ stop it erupting. Can't see it is the fault of the airlines

cupofteaplease · 15/04/2010 18:50

Very well said, libelulle

How long before some journalist asks an "expert" if it's due to global warming?

wannaBe · 15/04/2010 18:53

it's one thing to be disappointed. It's quite another to start blaming the airlines as if they should be able to do something about it.

Imagine the outcry if just a single plane crashed as a result of this and the risk was known but nothing had been done?

people would be better saving their annoyance for the insurance companies who are unlikely to pay out because this is an act of god.

pagwatch · 15/04/2010 18:53

I suspect there is some selective editing going on. I keep hearing the 'of course it is unavoidable but we are so disappointed' people.

But someone else has clearly gone around and found the 'couldn't they do something with a big dyson' types...

BitOfFun · 15/04/2010 18:54

I liked the fella who was grumbling "That's Iceland for you- first they take all our money, now they're wrecking our holidays!"

kitcat1977 · 15/04/2010 18:55

Of course I'd be disappointed, but it seems daft to whinge so publicly about something utterly beyond anyone's control. There was also a bloke moaning that he should be allowed to fly south. Er, why?!

Oh, and I thought I'd test the AIBU waters for the first time with a fairly innocuous one

addictedisinthesecondtrimester · 15/04/2010 18:57

it makes me laugh, there were 2 women just now at bristol airport saying, our plain this morning was cancelled, they wouldnt let us re-book but we managed to re-booked one for this afternoon on the internet only to find it had also been cancelled now were booked on one this evening.

Who wants to be the one to tell them no plains are flying till atleast tomorrow!

IndigoSky · 15/04/2010 19:00

I had a bit of a snort at a bloke on the news earlier who said he couldn't understand why there weren't any flights because he "couldn't see any ash" when he looked out the window and if he could see ok then so could the pilots.

But yes, very frustrating for people with once in a lifetime type things going on.

Hassled · 15/04/2010 19:00

My PILs - who are usually pretty sane and reasonable people - immediately made some "first they lose all our money, then they cause air traffic chaos" comment. The poor Icelandics.

RunawayWife · 15/04/2010 19:02

YABU everyone has the right to be disappointed or upset.
My sister starts chemo again next week and was heading off with my mum for a 5 night break in Turkey as it will be some time before she can go again, they were due to fly out this evening but have been unable to go.
They know there is nothing to do about it, but that does not make it any less disappointing for them

addictedisinthesecondtrimester · 15/04/2010 19:07

wifey the diffrence is your dsis and dmum arent blaming the airlines they accept that there is nothing that can be done

Hi btw

SpicedGerkin · 15/04/2010 19:11

PMSL @ a contingency plan.

It is one thing to be upset and dissapointed, another to blame the airlines IMO.
