It's not fair because ...

'... We're supposed to be going on holiday without the children for the first time.'

'... It's my birthday.'

'...I was supposed to be meeting Michelle Obama.'

OK, only half listening so probably misquoted, but that seemed to be the general jist.

So farking what? It's a volcanic cloud, whaddayawanna do about it?!!

I blame the Government

skihorse · 16/04/2010 08:25

Oh I don't think so Riven, have you seen the sort of people who use the cross channel ferry as foot-passengers?

captainunderpants The government? I take it you mean THATCHER!

ski horse you are quite right. my friend was stuck at lax trying to get home she has taken a plane to Minneapolis then one to Amsterdam has then driven from there to France and is now trying to get train/ferry/bus etc home. luckily she works for ryan air as air cabin crew. but there are lots of alternatives for the people trying to get home

addictedisinthesecondtrimester · 16/04/2010 08:50

sorry that should say luckily she works for ryan air cabin crew so isnt working today (she was ment to be back at work today after a holiday in america)

andiem · 16/04/2010 08:50

yabu yes it is annoying when people say stupid things on the telly but the fall out (!) from these events can be a right pita
dh is stuck in the states has been away for nearly 2 weeks I am due to work on saturday and sunday nights in a children's hospice I know we won't be able to get any other staff to cover those shifts so I am now frantically trying to arrange childcare for my two dcs for all of the weekend
currently I am pretty stressed about it all

skihorse · 16/04/2010 08:50

I hope she can get home secondtrimester. If it's help to anyone getting back from Benelux to the North of England there is a cracking route from Ijmuiden (just north of Amsterdam) to Newcastle. It's an overnight ferry and they've been doing amazing deals from 49 euros a pop - it's also the most "civilised" ferry I've ever been on.

the ones that make me are the idiots like the one on the news last night saying "I just can't see why they can't fly, volcanoes are at ground level," because obviously the airlines are doing this for the hell of it. tosser.

They interviewed someone on gmtv this morning though who said that she'd been told by her insurance company that she has to stay at the airport, because if a flight becomes available and she's not there to get on it then her insurance will be invalid.

ooojimaflip · 16/04/2010 09:41

Got this email from a mate who has been travelling on business:-

"This may put a smile on your faces.....

I'm now in a 1* (v.tops)...hotel just outside Frankfurt having been diverted due to the volcano type stuff....

I've been up 18 hrs so far...my boss wants me to work in the Frankfurt office tomorrow and fly back Sat lunch time....points which I've ignored.....!!!!

I will probably have to get a train to Paris and then Calais etc etc early tomorrow morning....which should be fun......as I can't see me getting back to heathrow tomorrow.....

I'm just half way through my first beer in the restaurant and they are making us pay cash for everything drink, by drink......i'm having fun......

Slight change from the £150 steak I have in Dubai last night!!!!

Please snigger away at my niff-naf and waffle....!!!
"

cantcarryon · 16/04/2010 09:50

Skihorse - what's the name of the company running that route? Sounds very interesting.

differentnameforthis · 16/04/2010 10:14

"It's a volcanic cloud, whaddayawanna do about it?"

Doesn't mean they can't be pissed off about it! It is a let down, especially if it is a special holiday!

skihorse · 16/04/2010 10:31

cantcarryon It's www.dfdsseaways.co.uk - I've always been very happy with them and am using them again next month.

andiem · 16/04/2010 10:42

one in london riven I have noticed that your dd goes to a hospice when I have been reading your posts

Missus84 · 16/04/2010 10:46

Fair enough to be disappointed, but some of the morons on the news were staggering! "I don't see why they had to cancel flights/the sky looks alright to me" etc

skihorse · 16/04/2010 10:57

missus Would it be morally wrong to sell them a really big bunch of helium balloons and sat nav?

Amapoleon · 16/04/2010 11:08

It's not the airlines fault but if you are personally affected by it , you are bound to be peed off. I said something similar to dh yesterday about all the people moaning.

This morning I am peed off because a locum who was flying out to do a biopsy on my breast , now can't get here. I don't blame the airlines but I am rather worried about how long it is going to take for someone to see me.

kitcat1977 · 16/04/2010 12:31

I can absolutely see that some have desperate need to fly or for others to fly to them (though of course the risks are still the same). It's the petty moaning that got on my tits, all seeming to take the view that someone is somehow to blame for the inconvenience. As far as holidays and business travel go, there's always the risk of some problem with flights, but them's the breaks. Tough.
