It's not fair because ...

'... We're supposed to be going on holiday without the children for the first time.'

'... It's my birthday.'

'...I was supposed to be meeting Michelle Obama.'

OK, only half listening so probably misquoted, but that seemed to be the general jist.

So farking what? It's a volcanic cloud, whaddayawanna do about it?!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/04/2010 12:48

Blimey, if my hard saved up for holiday was cancelled, Id be gutted even though I fully understand the reasons.
Was upset enough having to cancel this weeks camping!

at least my mild at my friends who managed to jet off to warmer places this easter has completely evaporated now

Salbysea · 16/04/2010 12:50

YANBU

there was a bloke interviewed who said the airlines should try harder to push it and see what happens, he was of the mind set that until someone dies all should carry on as normal Didn't believe the risk because there's been no incidents related to THIS cloud

he was only going on holiday FFS, it was his CHOICE to sleep in the airport, he coulda gone home.
He not on his way to visit a dying relative or waiting for someone who was abroad and stuck for accommodation and money etc

There are some real victims in this so I am also getting annoyed about the people like that whinging about their airline and their holiday

tablefor3 · 16/04/2010 12:56

It's especially stupid (the people saying that hte airlines should "try anyway") since Poland is still burying its dead from a plane crash caused precisely because a plane was caught in bad weather circumstances. (and it seems that certain people insisted that the flight went ahead despite the pilots' concerns).

iw ant a yacht for my family please

MrsC2010 · 16/04/2010 13:26

Grrrrr yachts, whole other gripe. The husband is racing in the Caribbean (poor baby ) and is blissfully unaware of all of this. But I, being horribly hormonal (pregnant) keep having horrific thoughts of him not being able to fly home for weeks. He's due home on Thurs. Very grumpy right now.

I'm trying to think of some complaints, but I can't think of any. Very annoying having no-one to blame!

pranma · 16/04/2010 13:38

YABU-I am due to fly out to Turkey at 9am tomorrow to visit my ds on his 40th birthday-got loads of pressies from everyone etc.
I am bitterly disappointed but know[as do most people]that it is no-one's fault.

Tiredmumno1 · 16/04/2010 13:52

there is no point whining about, would you get on the plane even if they were flying but knew there was a risk of crashing? did anyone see aircrash investigation when this ash actually caused a plane to crash, hundreds of people died, thats why they wont allow it. why would anyone want to risk it, its ok to be disappointed, but to moan that the airlines could have done more is ridiculous.

ninedragons · 16/04/2010 14:12

Actually nobody died on BA Flight 9

Human nature to look for someone to blame - really without the reporters sticking mircophones under 'stranded ' travellers there isn't much esle to say.

I would like to see more coverage however from Iceland see what is happening with the residents , true victims of this natural diaster.

tablefor3 · 16/04/2010 15:17

Although presumably - Captain Underpants - no-one can get there! Still, could use local Icelandic reporters to broadcast.

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 16/04/2010 15:35

Captain - indeed! Presumbaly rather more harrowing for them than the whingers who expect to be alays able to find someone to blame. Maybe this will waken some of those people up to the face that sometime no-one is to blame, and you can'r exect compo for every mishap, and that maybe people should condider their own contingencies and adjust their expectations that plan a always works out without a hitch.

beanlet · 16/04/2010 15:44

YABU. My DH is due to fly to Australia for work on Sunday, and is looking at possibly having to fork out £4000 of our own money for a business trip because no insurers pay out for acts of god, and his flight is non-refundable and non-changeable.

With our first baby on the way and with all the expenditure that entails, we're now really worried, because we CANNOT afford it!

skihorse · 16/04/2010 16:20

He's funding his own business trip beanlet? How strange. My company book my flights and give me an Amex.

prettybird · 16/04/2010 16:24

... and anyway, in these circumstacnes, if the airline has to cancel or reschedule, they do then have to make it refundable or or changeable.

SO don't panic

RunawayWife · 16/04/2010 17:30

My mum and sister have been re-booked for next week so hopefully thinks will be better by then.

A friends daughter and family including 8 month old are stuck in Spain and it is costing ££££££ for accommodation.

Oh dear. I'm feeling a little bit mean now for starting this thread. Hope people get to where the need to be soon (but it's still not the airlines' fault )

OP posts:
loobylu3 · 17/04/2010 17:54

Of course it is not the airlines or anyone else's fault but surely you can understand the interviewees disappointment at not being able to go on their long planned holidays and their upset at being left out of pocket in many cases!

We were due to fly out this morning for a long planned family holiday to celebrate three significant family birthdays and a significant wedding anniversary of my parents. The large expense of the accommodation will not be refunded because the terms and conditions exclude 'acts of God'. It is more than a little 'disappointing' for my parents who had saved up for this special trip for a couple of years!

birdsandblossoms · 17/04/2010 18:11

YABU my friend is due to fly to Auustralia on Friday to see her daughters and grandson who live in Perth and Melbourne she was nervous to start with about the flight but now is very scared at the prosect of not even getting there on the trip of a lifetime

MrsC2010 · 17/04/2010 18:22

I'm a pathetically hormonal pregnant person at the mo, I've been having all sorts of apocalyptic thoughts about my hsuabnd not getting home from the Caribbean...ever!! He's not due to fly out till Wed but of course I keep getting phone calls from my ever so helpful family saying things like "oh dear, how are you coping..." "have you heard it's getting worse..." "just don't hold your breath he'll be going anywhere soon" etc etc... yep, thanks, that really helps!!

WebDude · 17/04/2010 19:32

I only heard one of about 4 interviewees saying he was happy to be on ground and in one piece.

Have been in some situations where delays took place. Being disappointed is the least of your problems when safety is an issue.

I'm sure you would not want them to "rush" a repair on a jet engine, or take off in some other "danger" situation. Cannot understand anyone expecting airlines to risk planes and people, so YANBU.

Was on a plane at Rome when the pilot announced that we should leave the plane 'as there is a bomb on board'... After spending hours in the airport under armed guard, groups of us were taken to identify our bags in a remote part of the airfield under arc lights and with snow falling, before it was confirmed this had been a hoax. I was in a thin shirt as my destination was the Far East for a holiday, and I expected my exit from the plane to be in 90+ temperatures, not Rome in winter.

TrillianAstra · 17/04/2010 19:53

Skihorse I passed on your recommendation of the ferry to YanknCock (she's stuck in Amesterdam, halfway home from the US) and she has now booked a boat, so thank you!
