to think that this current school holiday is not half term

I have heard a few mums talk about these current school holidays as half term.

Isnt half term the midway break half way between the terms? Surely at the moment we are in the Easter holidays and it is a new term when school starts again next week? So therefore it is an end of term holiday not a half term holiday?

I know that there are more important things in the world to worry about and really what people call a holiday isnt the end of the world, but is it really just me that doesnt think we are currently in the middle of a half term?

If it is just me then I will accept that Im wrong and I will start calling it half term. I just need to know if its just me. Thanks.

You are right.

When they go back we will be in a new term, the summer term,

Next hols will be half term

next week is the start of the summer term, this is easter hols, half term is a week at the end of may, half way through the term.

This is Easter holidays at the end of Spring term. Summer term starts next week.

Thanks I knew it was, but I cant understand why people are calling it half term. I didnt know if it was new general wording for all school holidays nowadays. I have heard half term being used by at least 5 people and TBH I cant see why people should make that mistake. Then again I have a line of thought that thinks people should call things what they are.

in kent where i work we now have 6 terms a year so I'm guessing we shouldnt call anything half term anymore, except we do.

This holiday is definatly Easter Holiday though! YANBU

I've heard a few mums call it half term too but I just assumed they were confused.

TrillianAstra · 14/04/2010 13:14

It's not half term. It's the Easter holidays. You can tell because Easter happened. You know, chocolate, eggs, Jesus, 4 day weekend.

Firawla · 14/04/2010 13:16

its easter holidays but i heard a lot of people calling it half term too, maybe they thought saying easter will offend non religious people is the only explanation i can think of?! (btw im not offended by people saying it but thats the only reason i could think)
i think some people are using it as a general holiday word too, cos they said the actual half term 1 week holidays are like a half half term :S

This is strange becasue I have heard lots of people call it half term too which I have never done before.

There are however a couple of areas where they only had the Easter weekend off then are havoing their main holiday at the end of the month becasue of Easter being early, I wonder if that is why for some people.
