To want to buy my DD some slighter more expensive clothes?

I only mean Zara/Next as opposed to Asda/Tesco/Matalan/Primark!

Its not like the things break the bank is it? Its all a matter of choice....but one of my friends only ever buys from the cheaper stores and I am sorry but you can tell.

We are far from wealthy, they probably have more disposable income than us, but I buy fewer, better quality items I guess.

Spent the morning with a friend who made lots of digs - can you tell

redredwine1980 - you CAN tell tho -I find you have to REALLY pick and choose - they wear and wash really badly - and I have only learnt that from spending too much of my cash on them. Most of last years summer things I got from Asda/Primark as we were having our first beach holiday ever, and not one item can be reworn this year despite still fitting. I am careful too as I can't afford to buy much iyswim.

They are children tho ..not fashion models ..blob of icecream down primark top np..blob of icecream down fancy zara top omg ...

RedRedWine1980 · 13/04/2010 16:57

So you are judging the quality of clothes your friends kids wear whilst moaning about being judged about the price of your childs clothes? Doesnt sound very secure on either side.

Helenastar · 13/04/2010 16:59

I buy my Daughters mainly from Next H and M and Primark, I have never had any trouble with "bad Primark clothes" and actually find their jeans wear very well, its up to you where you buy your kids clothes from, nobody elses.
Mind you having said that I never tell all my friends where my DDs clothes are from, unless they comment on something, as its really none of their business

StuffedFullOfNothing · 13/04/2010 17:00

ahahaha

you both sound as charming as eachother to be honest.

Swanky · 13/04/2010 17:01

I am secure. I asked if AIBU to want to buy her some more expensive than the norm things, thats all - I am dressed in Tesco today head to toe other than my sensible Clark's pumps

Helenastar - I never ever ask where things are from unless I love it so much I want it then I am thrilled if its cheap - I am more likely to tell someone if I get a huge bargain than spent a fortune, probably because I never do!

DISCLAIMER: I usually buy my kids clothes from charity shops or jumble sales or if I'm really pushing out the boat- new from supermarkets.

BUT, as it was, I got a House of Frazer giftcard as a present from work when I got married last year so recently went to spend it. I'm 6 months pregnant so clothes are wasted on me so bought some £48 (in the sale)eans by Ralph Lauren for DS1. He's wore them twice and they've got a split in the seam.

So I am a bit at people that assume that more expensive = better quality. Do people really look at what young kids/babies wear anyway? Who gives a shit as long as the clothes fit, are reasonably matching and are suitable for the occasion?

RedRedWine1980 · 13/04/2010 17:08

Not all monsoon/zara etc clothes wash well just as not all Matalan/Tescos/Primark clothes wash crap...lets not forget they all come from mass produced factories where people work like slaves for crap wages...

LyraSilvertongue · 13/04/2010 17:08

You can tell with some stuff though. There's a world of difference between a Primark T-shirt and a Boden one.
I find a mix of cheap and more expensive works for us. My boys' jeans/shorts usually come from Primark or H&M and I might spend a bit more on tops. But they have plenty of Primark t-shirts too.

RedRedWine1980 · 13/04/2010 17:11

Boden is such a noveau riche 'label' its laughable

Dd2 is very hard on her clothes, and because of her special needs has no idea about cost or keeping things clean etc. This tends to mean that most of her stuff is from cheap places. I do enjoy finding her lovely things on ebay though and dressing her up a bit. It is definitely the case that mini-Boden washes and wears really well.

The OP and her friends sound a bit hung up on it all though, tbh. Kids are generally messy little buggers who look atrocious within minutes of dressing, whatever they're wearing.

RedRedWine1980 · 13/04/2010 17:12

Can imagine some people wrinkling their noses up guessing at the origin of peoples fabric- its such a chav quality if we are being honest!

Tryharder · 13/04/2010 17:13

Exactly, Redwine. The clothes are all made in the same factory in China anyway and the labels are sewn in afterwards.

IngridFletcher · 13/04/2010 17:13

'you sound like a snob, and to rhyme, a knob'

Gawd that made me guffaw. I have a 'friend' that I really need to say that to. She needs to downsize her house as has loads of debt but keeps saying 'oh no we couldn't live in a house as small as yours' - Like her kids are especially elastic and need more room to stretch or something.

sorry - nothing to do with thread but I have been fuming about it all day!

CheerfulYank · 13/04/2010 17:14

That's how I feel too LeQueen. My DS doesn't have many clothes; the ones he does have are slightly more expensive, whereas the friend I mentioned buys her children cheaper clothes all the time. So our DC's wardrobes probably cost about the same really!

The one thing I have found is that the new "vintage" look mini Boden jeans don't wear well. The knees wear out more quickly b/c of the distressing, so I'd rather buy a sturdier pair from Target.

LyraSilvertongue · 13/04/2010 17:14

Ingrid, that's really rude. What did you say to her?

CheerfulYank · 13/04/2010 17:17

But to clairfy, I do not care what other people put their children in, as long as they do not make snide comments about the way I clothe mine.

MillyMollyMoo · 13/04/2010 17:18

Next quality is dubious but then so is the supermarkets, if you want to be snobby superior you're going to have to try harder than Zara but then my DD put the knee through her joules trousers on the first wear so it's all rather pointless

CheerfulYank · 13/04/2010 17:19

er, clarify. And that is totally rude, Ingrid! We live in a little house too and I wouldn't trade it; am a totally crap housekeeper and wouldn't be able to keep a larger place clean!
