DD is a bit grumpy tonight, it has taken ages to get her off to sleep... and neighbours upstairs think that 11pm is a good time to move furniture around .

Rodent thats what they seem to be doing upstairs from me every bloody night!

doesn't help that there seem to be 100's of people living there, coming and going all hours of the night and thinking my front door is a good place to lean their bloody pushbikes.

my next door neighbours think their small children should still be running around screaming at 11.21, and join in by screaming too!
And then instead of putting their kids to bed they turn the music up louder to drown them out. Nice.

I have been in ground floor with laminate flooring above. NOT good. DSs room and where he had his head in the bed was also next to the communal front door. Never again.

We are now in a top (2nd) floor place with carpet. DS is in bed by 7.30pm at the latest and wakes no earlier than 7.30am. On a weekend he occupies himself with the TV if I am not awake and will then wake me around 8am for brekky.

I feel for those with people above them, whether you have kids or not. Especially if it is hard flooring.

The rule here is carpet only. I love that rule!

YANBU- I totally sympathise. We had similar prob, though not as bad as what you seem to have and asked neighbour to be quiet. They've actually been fine about it and done so.

However, it's not always possible to get a reasonable response. I admire FIL who was so annoyed by downstairs neighbour's loud music that he kicked his door in and smashed the stereo in front of this inconsiderate twat. he did get told off by the police but the bloke was quiet after that. i often felt tempted to do that to ex neighbour when I lived in a rented flat but he looked a bit too 'unpredictable'.

From a different pov, we rent a third floor flat with hardwood floors in the living areas. Day 1 of DH renting it, woman downstairs shows up to complain that he is walking on the floors and its making too much noise and disturbing her baby.

OK, so DH tried to be quieter. Then we moved in and we have a 2 year old. Woman is back upstairs complaining that she makes too much noise... now how on earth am I supposed to keep a 2 year old quiet and inactive all bleeding day?? And DD goes to bed at 8, but suffers night terrors, so there is sometime screaming, but we try to get to her asap.

We've been told that she has now offically complained to our landlord (who, btw, has told us to continue living our life and not take any notice of her). We try our best to be as unobtrusive as possible, includes me taking long walks and keeping out of the house during naptimes etc... but this is taking the biscuit.

OP, I understand your POV in this case, but perhaps a quiet word about your baby? If they don't have a child that is?

PS - Woman's baby is around 5 months old, and we can hear him crying constantly. We haven't complained, as we know how hard it can be to raise a child. Plus, she lives on second floor so what about her child when he is able to run around? Won't he make noise and disturb the family living on the first floor?

Feel like pointing this all to her, but have kept my mouth firmly shut so far.

Thank God, we are moving in a few months!!

Understand better now LadyEvenstar... its hard though, to find a balance isn't it? Perhaps complain, but not in a accusing way?

Lady downstairs got our backs up by moaning about us walking!!

We are going to need another 'Topic' soon for 'Neighbour Noise', there have been about 4 or 5 threads these past few days! I wonder if there's something in the air??

TLE - can you go and ask them to do something about the TV? TV's direct noise in a weird way, my parents TV you can hear from outside the house, yet in the living room it's not actually that loud. It's weird. Maybe they could put some extra carpeting under it or something? As for the noise on the stairs - just tell them it's loud and to please try to be quiet if they don't want DS2 screaming at all hours!!

Tweety - what you are doing is beyond the call of duty!! You are a saint. If you weren't moving soon I'd be telling you that you can't keep that up!!

TheLadyEvenstar and ChippingIn, that's whats keeping me going... no hitches so far with the house we're buying (fingers crossed!) and we'll be there in 2 months. I hope our neighbours there are nicer (but it doesn't matter overmuch, as we are moving to a detached place, and everything here in Canada is huge!!) We've just had such rotten luck with neighbours, its unbelievable.
