guy reversing in front of me

this has been bugging me all day.
and been a bit emotional, so thought I might have been a bit touchy.

come out of carpark, and guy in front of me looks like he doesn't know what he wants to do, so I give him a bit of time, think he is struggling over a few potholes, he has his right indicator on, then his left indicator on, then his reversing light!! but only one of his reversing lights works. so still being patient, think he is worried about the potholes, we are about 2metres away from the junction. And he started reversing!! I have no idea if he has seen me, so I beep my horn. He still doesn't acknowledge me, so i beep again.
I just shout " what are you doing"
then he gets out of the car, and starts screaming at me, telling me I am a prat.
So I wind down the window, and say " sorry you starting reversing a meter in front of me so I beeped my horn" and he is still shouting at me. Old guy in an estate car, with his wife, who is completely emotionless.

So, was I unreasonable?

nope, he's a freak and should park up forever because he clearly can't drive safely.

BessieBoots · 09/04/2010 23:44

Arse. People get weirdly shouty in their cars- I had someone stalk me in his big silver estate on the school run for ages because I'd beeped when he overtook me, nearly hitting an oncoming car. I was beeping because I could see the car and he could not, but you'd have thought I'd killed his pet hamster or summat

EsmeWeatherwax · 10/04/2010 00:43

People are odd in cars. I was sitting stationery at a petrol garage once, big queue of cars behind me, and a guy just reversed into me. He gets out his car screaming did I not see him reversing? er...yes mate, but I couldn't reach your feckin brake...

bellavita · 10/04/2010 00:58

You were certainly NOT unreasonable. Some people are in a world of their own sometimes.

A couple of weeks ago, I go to my car in the car park at work - which as well as all the staff at my work using it there is a leisure centre too whose customers use it, in effect really really busy.

I get in my car, look around - all clear to reverse which I started to do slowly. There is a nut job of a bloke who has driven up past our parked cars and was just parked there. He decides to reverse back at bloody high speed as I am half way out of my space. I could not get it back into first gear quick enough to go back into the space. I ended up beeping my horn at him twice. He stopped with a couple of inches to spare. He just did not look.

Mouseface · 10/04/2010 13:59

YANBU - if he'd hit you, would that have been your fault for waiting for him to decide where he actually wanted to go?

nickelbabe · 10/04/2010 17:21

i even had that when i was a pedestrian this week.
i was waiting to cross the road, this car pulled up just ahead of a driveway (in a parking space, so it wasn't like i realised they were going into the driveway). so once it had passed me, i started to cross.
just got level with their right rear lights and saw the reverse light go on. didn't think anything of it, because naturally, they would wait until i'd got to the pavement? no! they started reversing while i was walking behind them! not even a pause to look around them.

it amazes me how people manoeuvre without looking first.

cookielove · 10/04/2010 17:29

Yanbu, i was reversed into, hello big red car right behind you, i assume he got bored waiting to turn right at a junction, so reversed without thinking about it, 'hello theres a car behind you' he managed to pay attention when he hit me!!!

Lucky there was no damage to either car, but geez look in the bloody mirror!!

I wonder if anyone will come online and say the accidently reversed into someone??

RunawayWife · 10/04/2010 17:43

I would have run over his feet and drove off...old people and cars do not mix

penguin73 · 10/04/2010 18:54

My best one was sitting in a queue of traffic in a supermarket car park and somebody to my right reversing straight out of her space into me having just walked past the long queue of traffic I was sat in. The funniest bit - she got out and was suitably apologetic and upset and was really concerned that I couldn't get out of my car because I was injured....I wasn't, but I couldn't get out because her car was still blocking my door that she'd just rearranged! I had to ask her 3 times to move it before she realised.

RunawayWife you naughty!

There are definitely more crap drivers on the roads than there were 20 years ago. Every week I witness bad / dangerous driving while out and about.

Last week I was driving along a main road, and was stopped at traffic lights, waiting to turn left. The green left-arrow came on, so I pulled away and started to turn left. I had to slam the brakes on as some idiot woman travelling along the main road, in the opposite direction to me, turned right in my path, and proceeded to shout abuse and give me 2 fingers like I was in the wrong!

My most shameful driving episode was on a Christmas Day. I stopped at traffic lights, and the engine just cut out. I tried to start it again but it wouldn't. The traffic lights turned to green and the woman behind me beeped her horn. I still couldn't start the engine. She beeped again, and I turned round and shouted 'FK OFF' at her.
I'm horrified that I told someone to f
k off on a Christams Day .
