to want my life to be a bit like Mad Men...

...without the rampant misogyny and adultery. In fact, scratch that, it's part of the charm. I HAVE to drink whiskey while watching it, I want to fiddle with Don Draper's hair when he's post coital and it flops around, free of the Hair Cream. I want to dress like Betty and have that lovely little mouth of hers (although I would definitely look better smoking on camera than her) and I would absolutely like my sex life to reflect what is there on screen.
and seriously, it must be unreasonable that I heart Roger Stirling as much as I do!!!
ok, possibly too much sharing but really, I had to post before I went to bed with all this pent up obsession.
I thank you!

Don is indeed lovely. I find the opening credits with the music and the silouette of the man in the suit seen from the back with his arm on the back of the chair sexy too. I would love to look like Betty and to have her home and life, except for Don's infidelity of course. I sometimes envy her that Don wants her to be a SAHM, whereas my dh nags me to go back to work!
I wouldn't mind being a sex bomb like Joan either. I am only half way through the second series by the way. Am catching up on DVD.
Who would you rather be? Joan or Betty?

kickassangel · 09/04/2010 02:18

i would love to be able to dress like that, although must actually be v uncomfortable & most of the characters seem v repressed.

we've got it on blu-ray cos it looks so lovely.

i think dh wouldn't mind coming home to find me looking like betty, or joan. personally, i'd rather be peggy.

ToDoOrNotToDoList · 09/04/2010 13:23

I'm Joanie all the way, but (don't worry, I'm not giving anything away) as Betty gets a bit more feisty her wardrobe gets even better.
Clearly we'd all look as thin as her after three kids
Peggy eh? Not sure about that. She's a woman ahead of her time and I fear for her.
Is anyone with me on the Roger Stirling thing?

ew no roger!

i don't think i'd particulary like to live in that era, maybe 5 or so years on but i absolutely love the decor and want a headboard like don and betty's green one

SearchingForMyInnerJoan · 09/04/2010 15:14

I love Joan

SuSylvester · 09/04/2010 15:14

no oyu haev to haev the misogyny etc
they do nice sterling cooper mugs online

SuSylvester · 09/04/2010 15:20

mug

Sn0wflake · 09/04/2010 20:18

BUT....they are all so bloody depressed. I wouldn't want to live that way. Have we been watching the same program???

jkklpu · 09/04/2010 20:22

I agree that it's a great show but my dh and I ration the DVD episodes because it's so bleak and we need a break in between. Certainly no desire to be part of that world - not just the infidelity and alcoholism and mysogyny, but the whole basis on superficiality and the status of the ad men as that era's "masters of the universe" when it's all so frivolous and dishonest. And Don't whole back story is clearly pretty dark. Definitely wouldn't want to be Betty, who has her own problems, not just Don's and the way they treat their kids is dreadful.

Starbear · 09/04/2010 20:35

Okay, I want my own fantasy version. I want to be a female Don Draper that looks like Betty but brunette & tanned. With a wiggly & sense of Joan (not her taste in men) With the adventure that Peggy is about to have, been one of the few women to work in a glam but male dominated world. I want the English Lane Pryce as my boss. I don't want the kids. My fantasy would have my own Ds as my kid as he is so good looking, lovely and charming. He would just be a mini-male-me I also need the clothes the car & the house Oh! and a maid she can be of any ethnic group and I would paid well honest. Actually I love Madmen but I would rather be in 'I Dream of a Genie' Don't fancy the politican sso he can take a jump. Emm prefer Roger

southeastastra · 09/04/2010 20:37

i wouldn't describe it as bleak at all! i think it's quite exotic, the mad decor.

i love they have blinds and curtains and everything is smokey looking

it's glamorous

Wineonafridaynight · 09/04/2010 21:00

Oh my goodness. I totally agree. I long for my life to be like that (the good bits not the bad bits). I don't drink whisky but like you, have to have a drink whilst watching it. last night I didn't have any so smoked a cigarette instead. I gave up six months ago. Whoops.

I love Peggy as well. Really pleased for her success!

jkklpu · 09/04/2010 21:11

Yes, the clothes and decor are amazingly glamorous, there's lots of booze and fine dining, but EVERYone is unhappy/unfulfilled in some way and is lying about something to their nearest and dearest. Not something I'd want to be part of, I'm afraid. Apart from anything else, all that boozing and lying would just be so exhausting.

Nuttybear · 09/04/2010 21:27

I'm not good at two-timing I did it in my youth and it used to make me sick!!!!

Maveta · 09/04/2010 21:33

i love the series but rather than fantasising about the home life or sex life I constantly think - god how nice it must have been to work before email and mobiles and esp. blackberries!

strig · 09/04/2010 21:38

I am very sad only ep to go! I love it even with all the cheating and lying etc. But without giving too much away what about Sal! Also I kind of heart Roger when he called Joanie this week.

Nuttybear · 09/04/2010 21:45

I'm going to buy the box set and watch it over again!

kickassangel · 10/04/2010 01:54

can you imagine being able to take the lunch breaks that they do? and charging those lunches to work? i'm amazed they got any work done at all, let alone made a profit.

actually, i am practically a 1950s housewife, but i don't have a maid, or a figure & wardrobe like betty's.

somehow, it's so much less glamorous in RL than watching on tv.

Nuttybear · 10/04/2010 10:02

I always need a nap around 3pm I think I would be more productive nap in an office of my own with a sofa, honest

ToDoOrNotToDoList · 13/04/2010 16:13

jkklpu I'm glorifying it like Starbear (only I'm way less imaginative in what my fantasy version would be...go you!)
wineonafridaynight, don't beat yourself up, blame it on the evil TV types, it's what they're there for.
kickassangle and nuttybear I have a sofa in my office and am classed as a TV creative, but I have never had the balls to take a nap on it. It's too late to try it today but tomorrow I might give it a whirl!
Sigh...bless great TV for taking us out of our own lives for just a few precious moments.
and strig, yes, I don't know how I'll cope.
My parting comment to you all is how we all seem to have blocked out the hideous fisting moment with Don and that department store woman, back in Season One

YADNU Joan is one of the women I would most like to look like (can't stand he creepy doc though). Love Don, love Betty, love Peggy. The episode with the ride on cultivator was genius. I love the glassware in the Sterling Cooper offices too.

southeastastra · 14/04/2010 15:09

i'm really going to miss it

ToDoOrNotToDoList · 14/04/2010 15:18
