to my DP's father and his girlfriend??

She is being done for £18,000 in benefit fraud.
She was claiming HB, CTB and I think Incapacity whilst working and having DP's father living there.

And now they are on the phone bleating about how hard done by they are.
No more holidays to Florida, no more top of the range laptops and having to watch every penny.
My heart fucking bleeds!

And now they reckon that she will just be made bankrupt and everything will be hunkydory again.

I'm practically chewing my tongue off trying not to shout that They are partly the reason why Carer's are paid a pittance and there are more deserving people than them who NEED this money!

GGRRRRRR!! Rant over and breatheeeeeeeeeee.....

YANBU.

Miggsie · 06/04/2010 17:44

Benefit fraud is a criminal offence, so even if she is declared bankrupt she will still be prosecuted.

LittleWhiteWolf · 06/04/2010 17:45

YANBU indeed.

But dont say it out loud. Just say it in your head and feel a bit smug then move on. Some people will blame anyone else just so as not to blame themselves and wont take kindly to people rubbing it in.
But definatly NBU

soapboxqueen · 06/04/2010 17:46

YANBU infact if it makes you feel any better I'm not sure if declaring themselves bankrupt will help because some things just get held over until you pay them back. Bankrupt or not. Student loans are like this too.

YANBU. But things won't be hunky dory if they get made bankrupt - for a start they will get no credit anywhere for years and they may have to pay some level of their debts back still. The DWP might want some of its money back too! She will have to work for her money and only buy what she can afford.

I can't believe she has the cheek to moan about it though! she committed a crime ffs.

EricNorthmansmistress · 06/04/2010 17:55

YANBU
I don't think bankruptcy will work here - they will be taken to court and ordered to pay back at a rate they can afford at the very least, if they escape going to jail! It's not like having a big credit card bill....it's a crime.

That's just awful behaviour though. Purposefully defrauding the government out of thou=sands of £ because - why? They felt entitled to it? If she feels entitled to the contents of your handbag does she help herself?

Miggsie · 06/04/2010 17:55

A great many criminals do not regret they committed a crime, but they do regret being found out.

My grief is controllable.

BAFE · 06/04/2010 17:55

YANBU - don't say anything though, just keep your own counsel. How did she get caught? Do you know.

PersonalClown · 06/04/2010 17:58

I wouldn't say anything out loud. I don't have to as DP and his brother say it for me.

Just riles me a bit that his father thinks he is 'entitled' to things.

His birthday he 'demands' certain gifts, such as official replica rugby shirts at £50 a go! Of which I ignore
Expects DP to take time off work to look after their surrogate children Dobermans because kennels would be 'Torture' for them.

I really shouldn't complain. I still haven't met them after 2 years together because they won't drive the hour or so to us as it's too far but when we say we can't come down as DS is scared of big jumpy dogs, we get 'Oh he'll be fine, they calm down eventually!'

YANBU.

Avoiding being a benefits cheat by technicality can be a bit of a minefield at times, but this is not a case of that at ALL. They were blatantly taking the system for a ride, and they got what they deserved.

tethersend · 06/04/2010 18:01

It's benefit cheats' fault that carers get paid a pittance is it? Riiiiiiiiiight.

Actually, I think YABU. But enjoy yourself.

MathsMadMummy · 06/04/2010 18:01

YADNBU.

In fact I would like to join you in saying a big fat HAHAHAHAHA.

muggglewump · 06/04/2010 18:03

I s'pose YANBU, but I feel really uncomfortable with benefit cheat threads.

PersonalClown · 06/04/2010 18:06

I did say 'partly' Tethersend but it is your choice to disagree with me.
BAFE- they told us that a neighbour had informed on them. Probably had enough of them bragging if they do to everyone else as they do to us!

OP posts:
PersonalClown · 06/04/2010 18:10

I know Mugglewump... it's more the 'How can we get away with it' attitude they have towards it that get's my back up.

He phoned us to whine about it and bounce some ideas off us like putting all the expensive stuff in storage so bailiffs couldn't get it.

I guess if they are thinking in terms of Bailiffs that they don't intend on paying any of it back.

OP posts:
sweetkitty · 06/04/2010 18:15

I personally know someone who was claiming benefits for 3 years before getting caught.

Her DP was working FT and living with her but they claimed she was a lone parent.

After 3 years of claiming illegally all she got told was to stop claiming immediately and told to pay back £300 at £2 a week.

As she said herself "it was well worth it"

So no deterent really.

tethersend · 06/04/2010 18:16

'partly' is still wrong, PersonalClown.

Of course I can disagree with you- you posted in AIBU

PersonalClown · 06/04/2010 18:22

SweetKitty-£2 a week?? That's ridiculous.

And all these ad campaigns saying Shop them in, jail etc.
They'll be laughing if that's all they get told too.

I was being polite Tethersend rather than ignoring your disagreement. Although I'm curious, How am I wrong?

There still wouldn't be enough money in the government pot if all benefit cheats were caught and repaid and tax fraud etc but surely it would go towards helping the situation wouldn't it?

OP posts:
tethersend · 06/04/2010 18:35

How are you wrong?

Carers get paid a pittance because the government know they can get away with paying them a pittance; and conveniently get people to blame benefit fraudsters for the sorry state of affairs.

There is far more money in unclaimed benefit than is estimated to be lost to benefit fraud.

But none of that matters because you are obviously over the moon that justice has been meted out. Hurrah.

This thread is already leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

PersonalClown · 06/04/2010 18:43

I am not 'over the moon' as you put it. But I do believe that they lied to get money that they were not entitled to and should pay it back.
And I do not believe that benefit cheats are the be all and end all of all problems. I am not THAT naive.

OP posts:
tethersend · 06/04/2010 18:47

You started a thread asking 'AIBU to say it serves you fucking right!?'

That's quite far over the moon IMO.

BigBadMummy · 06/04/2010 18:48

There will be a court case

And it will be in the local papers.

It might even make the nationals.

She might get a prison sentence.

She may well lose her job.

She certainly wont get another one.

Declaring herself bankrupt will mean she will never be able to borrow money or privately rented.

She is right royally fucked.

That OP is karma....

Sit back and smile.

Quattrocento · 06/04/2010 18:49

I disapprove of schadenfreude. It plays to the worst in human nature. Although obviously I would like to see your father and his girlfriend boiled in oil, I have to try to be a bit more civilised than that.

By the way, there is no apostrophe in 'carers' when it is used as you have used it to denote a plural, rather than a possessive.

MillyMollyMoo · 06/04/2010 18:55

You cannot write off government debt even by going bankrupt like tax liability, so I guess benefit money is the same.
