to be cross with my elderly fil about the meaning of easter

Bit tongue in cheek really.

FIL was today bemoaning the fact that he couldnt go to tesco for his cigar supply as they were shut for Easter.

Its only Easter he said they could have had usual Sunday hours ,its not like Christmas or anything.....

ONLY EASTER?????? i SHOUTED - JESUS DIED ON A CROSS FOR US!!!! EASTER IS MORE SPECIAL THAN CHRISTMAS - YES EASTER IS IMPORTANT.

and that sais dh is why you should never discuss religion with a catholic especially not one who sat in a cold church for an hour and a half last night at the easter vigil.

well, i thoroughly agree that people really, really need to get a grip about shops being closed for ONE day.

in fact, earlier I was thinking how nice it would be if they were still shut every sunday, and half days on wednesdays and all that.

you are being very unreasonable to expect other people to feel the same about Easter as you do though!

nickschick · 04/04/2010 21:22

it was a bit jokey lol but it was when he said whats special about easter?

I'd vote for bringing back early closing on a Wednesday, I do worry about people who work in shops not getting enough/regular time off.

LetThereBeRock · 04/04/2010 21:32

No need to shout at us too.

GenevieveHawkings · 04/04/2010 21:44

Maybe Easter doesn't hold any significance whatsoever for your FIL...? It certainly doesn't for me. I'm happy to have a few days off work as a result of it but mightly pissed off that everything was shut today, just as I am when the shops shut early on Sundays. Christmas is a bit more fun but Easter is just dire.

Why does everyone else have to suffer? Not everyone is a Christian. Surely Christians can excercise their rights to stay away from the shops, at home or in churches taking part in Easter vigils or whatever it is they like to do to mark Easter, while the rest of us, to whom the concept of Easter means absolutely nothing whatsoever, get on with our lives.

SolidGoldBrass · 04/04/2010 21:48

Yes YABU. Easter is a pagan festival that the Christians hijacked anyway.

CwtchyMama · 04/04/2010 21:49

So how do you propose to staff the shops over Easter if you want them open for non-believers like yourself?

Would it be, Christian? OK you are off over Easter, Non-Believer? Right you are working cos somebody really needs to come in & browse round the shop & they might buy some socks or summat

2 days a year, yes 2, thats all, 2 days a year the shops are shut,if you cant live with that then you have a problem.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 04/04/2010 21:49

You think Jesus died. Some of think that's hogwash.

Greensleeves · 04/04/2010 21:51

if it's become a cultural habit for everyone to have a holiday at this time of year and call it Easter - which is a hotch-potch of different cultural and religious traditions in any case - then fine by me

but imposing your faith on others and pushing the "meaning of Easter" on people who don't believe in the supernatural is wrong

nobody died on a cross for my salvation, thanks

Nancy66 · 04/04/2010 21:52

If you don't believe in god or jesus or any of that stuff - and you can't buy a pint of milk or a loaf of bread then it is inconvenient.

TiggyD · 04/04/2010 21:52

WAS SANTA NAILED TO A BIG CHOCOLATE EGG FOR NOTHING!?

LynetteScavo · 04/04/2010 21:52

Well, Jesus isn't alive any more, is he?

They still do early closing on Wednesdays where I live, and some shops don't open at all on Wednesday, even in the run up to Christmas.

CwtchyMama · 04/04/2010 21:53

All the corner shops round here were open today so i dont think anyone had a problem buying milk or bread.

It was lovely to have a day at home with the family & just relax together.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 04/04/2010 21:54

There are some shops in our very smlall local town that does half day closing on a Wednesday.

alicet · 04/04/2010 21:54

Sorry to be a pedant but Jesus didn't die at Easter - that was Good Friday...

Personally think its all b*llocks and Easter for my family is about chocolate eggs but tbh we are traditionally a Christian country so I think closing shops for important christian occasions is fair play

Greensleeves · 04/04/2010 21:55

naw, traditionally we're a pagan country

christianity is only about five minutes old

GeekIsGood · 04/04/2010 21:55

YABVU to be cross with someone for not believing the same stories that you do.

FalafelAtYourFeet · 04/04/2010 21:57

An hour and a half? You got off easy! I raise you two and a half hours.

Including a folk version of the Exultate sung by a guitar strumming priest.

pigletmania · 04/04/2010 21:58

YANBU I agree with you, but then again I am Christian so hey ho:-)

juneybean · 04/04/2010 21:58

I don't get this whole "people who work in shops deserve a day off"

No one is working 7 days a week and if they are they should take it up with HR.

What about taxi drivers, hotels, bar staff, restaurant staff, cleaners, bus drivers? I'm sure there's far more.

CwtchyMama · 04/04/2010 22:00

Postal workers dont work over easter.

Shop workers work every bank holiday, except easter Sunday & Christmas day.

Do you get the bank holidays off?

BelleDameSansMerci · 04/04/2010 22:02

If we're going to do the Pagan festival hijacked by Christians can we add Christmas/Yule (amongst others) please

thisisyesterday · 04/04/2010 22:06

really? you think there are so many people who desperately need to buy milk or bread on easter sunday?

cos like, it was just sprung on you, and you couldn't possibly prepared.

seriously, get a grip! I am only 29 and i remember when shops were never open on sundays, and you know what? we all managed just fine.

what's so important that you have to have shops open 24/7???

Nancy66 · 04/04/2010 22:12

that's not really the point - thisisyesterday.

If you don't believe in god why should I not be allowed to shop because of the minority that do?

the believers can sit at home reading their bible - why can't I shop if I want?

the retailers WANT to open - nobody would be forcing them.

GenevieveHawkings · 04/04/2010 22:13

The argument that there would be no one to work in the shops if they stayed open over Easter is utter nonsense. It's a myth peddled by Christians who want to make sure that they continue to get their own way. It's disingenuous to suggest that you actually care about the people who might be called upon to work in them over the holiday period because we all know you couldn't care less about them at all really.

Even if shops stayed open 365 days a year around the clock, they'd always be staffed, don't you worry about that because people want jobs.

Let the shops stay open - no one is forcing you believers to go anywhere near them. Stay away, that's your preogative but don't make me suffer for your beliefs.

Cling on to your shops closed on Easter day because believe you me, the way things are going, it aint going to be hppening for a lot longer.
