to be cross with my elderly fil about the meaning of easter

Bit tongue in cheek really.

FIL was today bemoaning the fact that he couldnt go to tesco for his cigar supply as they were shut for Easter.

Its only Easter he said they could have had usual Sunday hours ,its not like Christmas or anything.....

ONLY EASTER?????? i SHOUTED - JESUS DIED ON A CROSS FOR US!!!! EASTER IS MORE SPECIAL THAN CHRISTMAS - YES EASTER IS IMPORTANT.

and that sais dh is why you should never discuss religion with a catholic especially not one who sat in a cold church for an hour and a half last night at the easter vigil.

Most shops were open as usual in Scotland today.

GenevieveHawkings · 04/04/2010 22:17

It's calledprogress Nancy66.

Once upon a time black people were sold into slavery, children were sent up chimneys and women weren't allowed to vote and guess what, everyone managed just fine but times change and now the shop are open on Sundays and Bank holidays and guess what? People love the flexibility it offers them.

Why can't Christians just get over it and stay away from the shops if them being open offends them as much as it sees to?

nickschick · 04/04/2010 22:17

It was a bit tongue in cheek as I keep saying ....Fil is 80 and v forgetful ....it was just a bit funny when it happened ....obviously not when retold tho .

Then in that case, Scotland is clearly a far more civilised and rational society.

GenevieveHawkings · 04/04/2010 22:20

Spacehopper5 I haven't read your thread but an easy way to ensure your child has a secular education is to do as I do and ensure, in the intersts of balance, that all the myths that are peddled in RE lessons at school are switftly debunked at home.

thisisyesterday · 04/04/2010 22:24

it's totally the point!!

I am an atheist, and still feel the same way. I am not about to get irate because I can't go shopping for 2 bloody days each year!
does it rteally matter???

Nancy66 · 04/04/2010 22:30

No, it's not the most pressing issue in my life right now.

But why stick with such an outdated tradition?

the shops want to open, people want to work, people want to shop.

christians can stay at home.

what's the problem?

Live and let live - you know, like jesus said (probably)

frasersmummy · 04/04/2010 22:30

I managed to buy chocolate and wine in my local co-op today and my parents bought bread in Tesco

I am suprised your Tesco was shut

Easter Must mean more in England than Scotland

Nemofish · 04/04/2010 22:34

nickschick I get you!

I would have wandered off muttering darkly that jee-sus had DIED for all our SINS...

choosyfloosy · 04/04/2010 22:34

Jesus was pretty sympathetic when there was no bread and milk left IIRC, and sorted it out himself via Ocado. Unfortunately they substituted 112 baskets of fish for the milk, but what are you going to do.

thisisyesterday · 04/04/2010 22:38

but i am not incapable of accepting that to some people this IS important, and that if they feel very strongly over the opening of shops then that's fine, it's only 2 days a year, we know in advance... I quite enjoy knowing that I can't go out shopping or anything else actually (but maybe i am odd like that?)

I don't know, I still view us as a CHristian country, and I don't think it hurts to uphold certain values and traditions, even if I don't personally believe in it

Onestonetogo · 04/04/2010 22:48

OP- you don't really believe the Jesus story do you? And that he died and then became alive again?

YANBU, shops should be closed sometimes. You happen to not be unreasonable, but for the wrong reasons.

igglepigglecrazy · 04/04/2010 22:48

Hey, YANBU at ALL, but I am catholic too...so a'll probably be flamed too!!! And for THOSE who say Easter is nothing to do with Jesus....WTF?! Emm....Yeah it bloody is!!!!

Ppl are entitled however to believe what they like, but DON'T flame ppl for being catholic/christian and believing in god

SueSylvester · 04/04/2010 22:52

YABU. Your ridiculous fairytales have had enough influence on this country, its about time we really got secular.

igglepigglecrazy · 04/04/2010 22:54

They ARE NOT fairytales, that is bloody insensitive

thisisyesterday · 04/04/2010 22:54

yes, let's quit with the offensive anti-christian posts already

if you don't believe then fine, but it is not ok to ridicule those who do

FalafelAtYourFeet · 04/04/2010 22:55
igglepigglecrazy · 04/04/2010 22:55

Thanku thisisyesterday, bloody no need for that

FalafelAtYourFeet · 04/04/2010 22:55

(not you thisisyesterday!)

igglepigglecrazy · 04/04/2010 22:56

Why can't ppl have a convo without starting up crap, it's not nice

igglepigglecrazy · 04/04/2010 22:57

Me falafel?

Nemofish · 04/04/2010 22:58

I do wonder if the occurance of several very inflammatory / controversial threads elsewhere on mumsnet has made people feel a bit... I don't know, on edge or something?

FalafelAtYourFeet · 04/04/2010 22:59

No! the people being rude!

gaelicsheep · 04/04/2010 23:01

YANBU. I'm not religious myself any more but I went to school and know perfectly well the Christian meaning between both festivals. Easter is more significant to Christians and we are notionally a Christian country. End of argument. If we can't cope with the supermarket being shut for one day then it's more than a little pathetic.
