Just wanted to say if you it works for you that is great but for me YUCK!

gkys · 03/05/2011 18:44

ok have been googling, mooncups dont sound that bad to be honest, have just ordered one, not sure how comfortable they look though, washable pads are not forme, i know this without trying them

tyler80 · 03/05/2011 18:48

"Jam Sponges are easy to remove when they are full as they get heavier and work their way down, so they are safer as you will not forget to take them out! With a very light flow this won't happen so much so you might want to tie some dental floss around your sponge to help you remove it."

This line alone completely puts me off the idea of jam sponges

MsScarlett · 03/05/2011 19:56

Are they really called jam sponges? That's fecking gross. I'm never eating jam sponge again! Boak!

Thank you - i ordered a mooncup last night so will give it a go. can you have dry runs so to speak? or will it be too difficult to insert and remove without your af?
I can;t beleive i never twigged that my itchy biots co-incided with the use of disposable sanpro.

Twit · 04/05/2011 11:03

So what and how many would you recommend for after a baby? I'm thinking maybe after a week or two cos I am lazy and then for whenever I get my periods back?

ProfYaffle · 04/05/2011 11:15

Hotchpotch - I find them fine to use without AF, sometimes if I feel a bit crampy and know I'm going to be away from home I'll use the mooncup just in case I come on while I'm out. It's fine, I just rinse mine under the tap before putting it in as I find the water slightly lubricates it.

Champersonice · 04/05/2011 11:22

Jam sponges??!! I read that as jam sandwiches Confused ooh no, sounds awful.

And is there really something called Jimmy Riddle??? So funny.

deemented · 04/05/2011 11:25

Twit - i'd highly reccommend Weenotions postpartum pads, or wall to walls. Or any of the long ones. It depends on how you're having the baby as to how much you'll bleed - I bled much more after a vaginal delivery than a c-sec. As for how many - that depends on how often you're likely to be washing the ones you have. I have far too many lots so i wash every three days, others prefer washing daily.

One thing i would say is invest in a small lidded bin from wilkinsons - thats what i use to soak mine in - i give them a quick rinse under the tap in cold water, then soak in cold water again until ready to wash. And if you line the bin with a drawstring net bag then theres no need to handle the used pads at all - just drain off the water down the plughole and throw the lot in the washer.

deemented · 04/05/2011 11:26

Champersonice- yes, Jimmy Riddles are fab. They make the most amazing cloth sanpro and nappies, and their childrens clothes are stunning but expensieve

Champersonice · 04/05/2011 11:32

Dee, I am a Londoner and all though I don't often speak cockney rythming slang, I love the term 'jimmy riddle' and have been know to never use it!

Champersonice · 04/05/2011 11:40

although not all though! Tut tut!!

Twit · 04/05/2011 12:39

gah! I wish they just did a pack ready so all I have to do is choose and pay.
By two weeks it's not quite as bad is it? So say I wash every other day 6/8 wall 2 wall and 6 slightly smaller? The same of the smaller again and the liner type ones? Bamboo or hemp? cotton topped or minky? gah!

deemented · 04/05/2011 12:42

Bamboo is good, very absorbant, as is hemp, but i prefer bamboo. I have both minky and cotton topped - cotton is more breatheable and obviously natural.

Twit · 04/05/2011 15:47

ok thanks.
I will wash nappies, if I get the white/ecru cotton ones Shock could I treat them the same as crappy nappies? For normal use?
I will say it again why is there no ready made pack? The price choice is a bit daunting although I will build up bit by bit I think, starting with the big 'uns and a bag (in coloured minkee natch).
After a few months I may try a mooncup but after 5 kids it might fall outmay not be the right method for me.
Is it weird to be a bit excited? Grin

deemented · 04/05/2011 16:55

I've just spoken to one of the folks at Weenotions and they are going to discuss doing a starter pack for complete novices Smile

You could treat them the same as nappies, except i dry pail my nappies and i wet pail my pads.

Twit · 04/05/2011 17:07

Ooh Grin
A post birth pack would be great if that could be sorted a few weeks before 5th July??Wink Grin
It would be huge I'm guessing 'cos you'd need some of every size. You could include breast pads as well.

Fab123 · 04/05/2011 18:00

Great minds Twit! I was just thinking I won't want to be using tampons after the birth in July! I saw the Etsy post earlier and they have several options for packs of 3+
www.etsy.com/search/handmade/bath_and_beauty?q=washable+pads&noautofacet=1 I just need to figure out how to get it back to £ rather than $ as I hastily dismissed a pop up telling me I might want just that Blush

deemented · 04/05/2011 18:02

Ooooh - i'll suggest that too... Thanks Smile

Twit · 04/05/2011 20:29

Obviously if they need a tester... Wink

heliumballoons · 05/05/2011 20:10

Yes deemented I need help. Grin I'll go back to weenotions website. I got to it through the etsy link and saw some.

I think I am looking for bamboo with cotton top? I'm thinking cotton as the problem I have is disposable san pro causes an itch Blush I want a selection of panty liners, medium flow and probably long/heavy? for night?

How many of each should I order? Enough for use for a whole periosd iyswim? Or do you wash during period and use the same one twice. (tbh this seems a little bit of a palava for me) I plan to have a lidded tub with water and soak until a colour wash goes in. However I'm thinking if theres specific washing condition just to do one wash when period ends?

I am very tempted (if a little apprehensive) to give the mooncup ago.

Its so much to take in but I know in the long run these products will save me money, be more comfortable and also added bonus of being better for the environment.

Needanewname · 05/05/2011 20:41

I got a moon cup a while ago, took me a while to get used to it but much better than tampins, however got out of the habit and started using towels, however I do feel that I am contributing to the landfill (an in a not very pleasant way!) Am liking the washable towels, (love the just fudssy ones) however can someone give me some advice on what fabric is best and all the different options as I'm getting myself completely confused. I woudl liek to try a couple before I dive head first into spending a fortune on them.

Thanks.

Needanewname · 06/05/2011 22:03

oh dear I killed the thread!

KnickersOnOnesHead · 01/06/2011 15:31

It depends really NeedA. As I make my own, I use fleece on some and cotton on others. But you can get bamboo etc
