Re the point about mooncups and thrush, I used to get thrush from tampons but have never had it since switching to a mooncup. I have a light flow and tampons were always uncomfortable to use, mooncup is significantly better, would never switch back to tampons again.

peachyuk · 03/05/2011 14:21

oooh i've heard about mooncups but never the pads

i suffer from abcess' down there at the lovely time of the month and think its something to do with the pads rubbing

has anyone had this problem that has used the reusable ones?

heliumballoons · 03/05/2011 14:24

PeachUK I get abcesses (anal ones) that are agravatted by disposibles. I am thinking san-pro will help with that too. Heres hoping fpr both of us.

FoundationGarmentsOnOnesHead · 03/05/2011 14:25

Peachy, I suffer with abscess' down there and they are always worse at that time of the month and I noticed that disposable pads always rubbed which made it much worse.

Since using reusable ones there are few and far between now.

FoundationGarmentsOnOnesHead · 03/05/2011 14:27

Oh, and I love different designed ones as they are much nicer to look at when they are blowing on the line Grin

AmyStake · 03/05/2011 14:32

Thank god for Implanon Grin

peachyuk · 03/05/2011 14:35

thanks foundation - my gp is thinking about having some of the glands removed from down there

but if reusable ones will help, think i'll give them ago

HotchpotchHoney · 03/05/2011 14:48

do you know, i am intrigued. i have only been using tampons since the launch of tampax compak as always had problems with cardboard tubed tampons and never able to insert correctly a non applicator tampon. but I have felt a) increasingly guilty about the amount of plastic that is disposed each month
b) been concerned that my periods appear to have got heavier (i had put that down to weight gain)
c) had issues with thursh that i have never had before and itching on my vulva that drives me insane as obviously cant scratch it, and only just twigged that this is since i began using tampons. and it would make sense as reason i stopped using dispoable pads and went to tampons is that the pads would cause itching in that area too.

so does it sound like i would be a good candidate for washable/reusable sanpro? im not sure that i could insert a mooncup correctly as i couldn't insert a non applicator tampon far enough that it wasn't half hanging out Blush so can one of the expert please advise me on best options.

any help/info greatfully received. thanks (apologies for lack of caps but my shift button broken!)

HotchpotchHoney · 03/05/2011 14:50

should read the whole thread as i see heliumballoon has similar issues

meliesmummy · 03/05/2011 14:55

This thread is really interesting. I used washable nappies for my dd but the idea of washable pads never appealed, mainly because I'm scared someone curious would look in the soaking bucket! I've just had a quick google and it looks like a lot to take in though! Can someone recommend a site that sells pads that are a) not too expensive b) not garish colours (what's wrong with cream fgs?!) and do the job well? There's so much to take in! And how many did you buy to start off with? I ordered a mooncup last week so I guess it depends how I get on with that. Also hoping to be pregnant soon!
Thanks ladies x

KnickersOnOnesHead · 03/05/2011 14:58

Do you really need to ask what is wrong with cream? Grin

meliesmummy · 03/05/2011 15:02

Ok, that came out wrong...I just thought that cream is more discreet, I don't want flowers or tartan in my knickers! Grin I just thought that even a pattern can't hide blood...

Mrsfluff · 03/05/2011 16:15

Hmmmm, I don't fancy reusable STs, but I'm starting to seriously consider a mooncup. I get really heavy periods and it would be nice to find something that lasts loger than an hour! Would I be correct in my assumption that you could wear them for swimming?

ProfYaffle · 03/05/2011 16:20

Hotchpotch - mooncups sit lower down than tampons so they're easier to put in (I find anyway) And Mrsfluff - yes, you can swim with a mooncup.

Mooncups are the only form of sanpro I've ever used where I can't feel a thing and genuinely forget I've got my period. Luckily, as my flow is light, I can get away with emptying once a day so I time it for when I'm at home and the issue of using public loos hasn't arisen.

LisamumtoJake · 03/05/2011 16:23

feck me, moonrabbits?! I do like the patterns, but i aint keen on them on the line blowing Grin
Now a mooncup is something i have been considering for a while, just tooo scared to get one Blush

deemented · 03/05/2011 16:23

I use washable san pro and Jam Sponges. Much much better than disposable san pro, imo.

Mrsfluff · 03/05/2011 16:31

Right, I think I'm going to 'treat' myself to one. It would soon pay for itself & I just know that I will be on for our first summer hol in years, which means less pool time. Is the Mooncup the best one to go for, or are there alternatives that are as good?

bruffin · 03/05/2011 16:47

"Re; Mooncup, since I switched to the mooncup my AF has been 1-2 days shorter than normal (over the last year so not just a one off!). Apparently a possible reason for this is that instead of "stopping" yourself up you're allowing it to free flow and collect "

Mine got a lot heavier and painful when i started using a mooncup - coincided with premenopause,so shorter periods may just be a coincidence.

MsScarlett · 03/05/2011 16:48

From fairy hammock website:

"Fairy HammockSize Indicator - Fairies from left to right are: Wall to Wall Fairy, Extra long Fairy, Regular size Fairy..."

PMSL! In my house a fairy is the name given to one's lady-parts!

I think after dd, I have somewhere between a "wall to wall" one and an "extra long" one... Grin

heliumballoons · 03/05/2011 17:02

Whats a jam sponge? Confused

KnickersOnOnesHead · 03/05/2011 17:52

jam sponge

pigsinmud · 03/05/2011 18:13

Hotchpotchhoney - i have had similar problems. The tampon strings irritate me and I end up scratching and getting very sore. I am quite sensitive and only use perfume & soap free shower gels.

This month I dug out my mooncup - bought it a couple of years ago and never used it. No problems. No itching. No soreness. The first day I was aware it was there, but by second day was used to it.

heliumballoons · 03/05/2011 18:30

Oh the jam sponge. This is all very new to me and wierd but I really want to get some reusable san-pro.

I can't get my head around ordering them from the websites though. They seem to be asking me what I want Confused I don't know!! pretty pink and purple ones Grin

deemented · 03/05/2011 18:37

Jam Sponges are excellent - i highly reccomend them. Much preferable imo to a mooncup.

deemented · 03/05/2011 18:40

Do you need help at all Helium? Weenotions are excellent, but if you;re looking for some varity then ave a look at luxury moon - i know Heather, the lady that runs it and she's lovely She stocks lots of different types of sanpro from different makers. Hollow Oak and Jimmy Riddles sanpro are both brands i'd reccomend.
