As well as environmental concerns and not being happy spending cash on the disposable stuff. I once saw a picture in a magazine of all the little bits that get left behind when you use tampons. It was about 15 years ago, and it put me right off and I've never used tampons since.
I do use a mooncup now and again, mostly for swimming. But I prefer the pads.

CoupleofKooks · 03/04/2010 21:44

if you don't think menstruation is horrid, then why are washable pads "Beyond horrid!"?

do you freak out about cloth nappies also?

paisleyleaf · 03/04/2010 21:45

What about seapearls/jamsponges OP?

missmoopy · 03/04/2010 21:47

I just think that it is something that is better dealt with by being disposed of as soon as possible. And tbh, and this may be way too much info so sorry in advancee! - i have very heavy periods and lots of clots so not sure they would be upto the job! I much prefer tampons to pads anyway as they are discreet, and i do not worry as much about leakage. Didn't mean to offend ladies, sorry

cluckyduck · 03/04/2010 21:47

I used to think that these kind of products were grim too, until I tried reusable baby wipes, they're just so much easier and nicer than using nasty fragranced nylo. Don't knock it till you try it!

catsdontscreetch · 03/04/2010 21:48

I've recently converted to using a mooncup (took me 5 years thinking about it)and I find it so much easier than tampons.

I'm never been a fan of pads, but I think the washable pads are a good idea, not sure about the patterns thought.

MotherOfBarabas · 03/04/2010 21:48

can't be bothered with all the extra cleaning etc but as a mooncup user i guarantee you that tampons leach much more moisture out of you than necessary. so many people i know have just stopped experiencing period cramps when they stopped using tampons.

missmoopy · 03/04/2010 21:48

and no problem at all with reusable nappies, although didn't use them.

MotherOfBarabas · 03/04/2010 21:49

sorry, cant be bothered with the cleaning of pads. but can with the mooncup, they're great.

ScaredOne · 03/04/2010 21:52

This might be a dumb question but what would worry me about these is if you are gone from home for a long time. What do you do, take several pads? What if you are over at a friends house for a long weekend? A mooncup is discrete to clean I guess but the pads?
Wouldn't fancy collecting them in my pocketbook

paisleyleaf · 03/04/2010 21:55

ScaredOne, you don't need to sign a contract that you will use them and nothing else for evermore.I'd use disposables/mooncup on holiday.

ScaredOne · 03/04/2010 22:00

Oh of course not, I just wondered what people do. On here quite a few people said they wouldn't like to use anything disposable at all anymore, so I just wondered.
Am thinking about getting a moon cup myself at the moment.

LauraIngallsWilder · 03/04/2010 22:02

missmoopy - the point is that disposable pads have plastic in them that takes years to decompose so although you have chucked it, it really hasnt gone away, its taking up space (albeit a small space) in landfill.

Washable san pro is really easy to deal with honestly - and far cheaper in the long run as they last for years.

The cutesy prints are an advantage imo - any stain left behind is hidden in the cutesy print. White washable sanpro would look quite ugh far too quickly!

Wrt to weekends away etc tbh I would take disposable if I thought I was likely to need it.

missmoopy hope this doesn't seem like i am hassling you - not meant to be like that - but hoping this might be helpful

mooncups are great for heavy flow and i agree with you, it's good to be able to dispose of menstrual blood easily - with a mooncup you just flush it straight down the toilet
i think sanpro hanging around in bins is naturally a bit yuck (old rubbish usually is) and for that reason, we have started to think of periods as yuck as well

i can see with a heavy period you wouldn't feel comfortable with a reusable pad, but a mooncup can hold more blood than the largest tampons, plsu as mentioned earlier, you may bleed less anyway

sorry if this was really intrusive but i was so glad when i finally tried a mooncup! they are so clean and comfortable

ScaredOne · 03/04/2010 22:16

SugarMouse, thank you. I didn't know you have to change the mooncup so little. That is quite interesting and definitely worth considering then!

missmoopy · 03/04/2010 22:21

Coupleof, I don't feel hassled at all, don't worry! Not sure could get head round mooncup! Maybe I am just squeamish!

pigletmania · 03/04/2010 22:25

Would not use them for the first few days of y period as its really heavy and would rather rip throw all sanitary pads with copious amounts of blood in the bin, but would consider it for the last few days when things are a lot lighter and easier to manage.

confuddledDOTcom · 03/04/2010 23:00

I used a mooncup for the first time when I bled last, which was 9 weeks of almost none stop bleeding! I was losing about 100ml a day (when I could measure it) and leaking over night (as in over flowing rather than not being in right) I can't imagine how that would have been with tampons! Actually I can, the first day it got bad I got dressed, went to town, bought my mooncup, went to Pizza Hut registered I was in the queue then went to the toilet to find I'd leaked badly.

I can't imagine using washable towels, but I wouldn't use disposables anymore.

chipmonkey · 03/04/2010 23:05

I used cloth sanpro and found that the soaking was a bit of a problems as I am easily distracted and sometimes forgot they were soaking in a little bin I kept behind the loo until they had turned into a horrible science experiment.

So then I switched to a Mooncup which was much easier - until I got thrush and let's just say that I DON'T recommend using Mooncups if you have thrush [pain emoticon]

So I got out the cloth sanpro again but this time on the advice of the nice girls on clothnappytree.com I didn't bother soaking them, just rinsed them out till the water flowed clear and threw them in with the cloth nappies in the washing machine. This has been fine and has gotten me back into using them again.

I did get one of these cloth tampons but have not managed to use it successfully yet!

chipmonkey · 03/04/2010 23:07

OMG, confuddled, that is a lot of bleeding!! I would only lose about 50ml on my very worst day! Do you know why that happened to you?

CheeeseOnToast · 03/04/2010 23:18

I have a quick question for mooncup users, if you'd be so kind? I am really interested in getting one - and think i will - and can imagine it would be discrete to empty most of the time, but my question is this:

What happens when you go to, say, a public toilet where the sinks are outside the cubicle? Clearly if you removed the mooncup and tip contents down the toilet, thats fine, but can you replace it without rinsing it? Obv you wouldn't do it all the time, but occasionally, would that be ok?

My work has this set up, and I'm not sure I could last a whole day without changing it if you have to rinse every time you empty it?

ant3nna · 03/04/2010 23:19

I feel your heavy period pain, confuddled.

I can lose up to 80ml a day since I've had a coil fitted. So glad I use a Mooncup, the first period after coil fitting was awful, had to use disposable pads and every time I moved, coughed or laughed a massive blob of blood would shoot out. I honestly thought that I had wet myself the first time it happened because no pad can instantly absorb that amount of liquid.

MotherOfBarabas · 03/04/2010 23:27

cheeese, some people rinse with a bottle of water, i can't be arsed, i just wipe with loo roll and put it back where the sun don't shine. but then i work from home so only have to empty it under those circs when am out of the house.

ant3nna · 03/04/2010 23:31

Cheeese, in this situation I usually give it a quick wipe with loo roll and reinsert. I know some people don't like to do this though.

I have heard that many people take a bottle of water into the loo and use that to rinse it out. Other people just pour the blood out and reinsert.

Its really whatever you feel comfortable with. I've been using my Mooncup for about 2 years now and it really has made a difference to how I see periods. Its not so much of a hassle anymore, I don't have to worry about being caught short. I even have a cute little case to keep it in my bag in.
