to think that Tesco should not be apologising for being closed on Easter Sunday?

Spotted a banner outside my local Tesco this afternoon, apologising for being closed on Easter Sunday. Just struck me that it's Easter Sunday and why on earth are they apologising. Can't remember if they also apologise for not opening on Christmas Day. Seems wrong to me......

I was alive when nothing was open on a Sunday so I don't see why should apologise either.

junglist1 · 02/04/2010 20:41

I was alive as in born not I was alive and now I'm not. I still am

Nancy66 · 02/04/2010 20:41

They want to open but the law forbids it.

It's ridiculous in the current climate not to amend our ancient trading laws

onepieceoflollipop · 02/04/2010 20:42

It is just an advertising banner (imo)

Afaik no large shops in the UK (or in England, not sure about whole of UK) are permitted to be open on Easter Sunday. Afaik this was part of the agreement when (years ago) the law was made that shops could trade for up to 6 hours on a Sunday. (Easter being a notable exception)

No need for them to apologise imo.

fragola · 02/04/2010 20:45

Apologising for having to take a day off in their quest for world domination!

tvaerialmagpiebin · 02/04/2010 20:45

It made me vaguely irritated too.
What next? "We're sorry we can't sell weapons-grade plutonium"???

southeastastra · 02/04/2010 20:46

i think they should open

DrZeus · 02/04/2010 20:47

fragola - how true

lankyalto - lol!

Of course they want to open. It's Tesco. They'll no doubt be opening on Christmas day for a few hours, just give them a few years. I dislike tesco more and more as time goes on.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 02/04/2010 20:48

Lol I came on to say exactly what fragola said!

DorotheaPlenticlew · 02/04/2010 20:48

lankyalto

I suppose that if you don't recognize Easter and need to do a shop, it might be slightly inconvenient and those are the people they're apologizing to. ?

junglist1 · 02/04/2010 20:49

"There are no airplanes taking off from any of our aisles at this supermarket. We apologise for any inconvenience caused"

Tiredmumno1 · 02/04/2010 20:49

@ junglist. I would be bloody worried if you werent alive but still typing

tvaerialmagpiebin · 02/04/2010 20:54

"We are sorry that we are unable to split the atom in this store. We're working on it right now!"

Oops that is more of a Microsft one.

FabIsGettingThere · 02/04/2010 20:55

Some garden centres are opening for browsing and advice. It pisses me off so much. It is Easter Sunday and there isn't a lot left in this country that hasn't been ridden rough shod over so let us at least keep a few Sundays a year where the shops are shut.

AnzoneioBanderas · 02/04/2010 20:56

bearing in mind only 50% of the nation are christian then YES

junglist1 · 02/04/2010 20:58

"We are sorry but none of our staff are qualified to provide experimental vampire experiences at this store presently"

seeyoukay · 02/04/2010 20:59

Good to see acceptance of other cultures and those that don't give two shits about Easter is alive and well

I'm not religious so I want them open. To me its just another Sunday. I'd rather the BH were scrapped and I got an extra 2 days holiday to use when I felt like it no that I don't have to deal with every other fucker being off as well.

ILovePlayingDarts · 02/04/2010 20:59

The current Sunday Trading Law is only about 10-15 years old as it stands, and surely people should know by now that it means Tesco IS NOT OPEN on Easter Sunday.

But, still I see people turning into Tesco's car park every Easter Sunday, driving up to, and hesitating near the main entrance before driving away again.

The petrol station is open, and there are obviously other people popping in for fuel or a paper, but that entrance is separate and it's quite clear that there are people who assume that Tesco's will be open.

tvaerialmagpiebin · 02/04/2010 21:01

Fab I think you can report them to trading standards.

I remember vividly walking round on 1st jan 2000 when everyone was pleased to be alive because the planes hadn't fallen out of the sky, everyone was DESPERATE to spend money but nowhere was open and people were actually having to talk to one another. Does us good to have some time when shops aren't open.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 02/04/2010 21:02

Actually. Can someone settle an arguement between me and DH. He told me he is going to go play badminton with a mate on Sunday. I said that it's Easter Sunday, nowhere will be open surely?? Are gyms open Easter Sunday/?

DrZeus · 02/04/2010 21:04

My Sports Centre is open on Easter Sunday and there are classes running. Shorter hours tho'.

onepieceoflollipop · 02/04/2010 21:07

Ferret I think that it is just the large shops/garden centres etc that are not permitted to be open.

Afaik leisure facilities will be mainly open. Happy to be corrected if I am wrong though.

My work will definitely be open (I'm a nurse). If you feel ill and live in the Midlands do me a favour and try and wait til Monday.
