to think that Tesco should not be apologising for being closed on Easter Sunday?

Spotted a banner outside my local Tesco this afternoon, apologising for being closed on Easter Sunday. Just struck me that it's Easter Sunday and why on earth are they apologising. Can't remember if they also apologise for not opening on Christmas Day. Seems wrong to me......

YANBU its really sad.

Divatheshopaholic · 02/04/2010 22:10

there was no banner at our local tesco today i wonder why they arent apologizing or not bothered to put banner up for me

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 02/04/2010 22:14

Maybe yours is open? (If it's not in England...)

juneybean · 02/04/2010 22:16

But shops aren't the only place where people don't have weekends off. Do you suppose we should shut down the entire country for "family time"

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 02/04/2010 22:19

Essential services only. Why not?

juneybean · 02/04/2010 22:21

Could be interesting to say the least

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 02/04/2010 22:23

It's the way things used to be

No children's TV either. We had to do that thing with books, you remember?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 02/04/2010 22:24

Depends on what you call "essential services", doesn't it? OK, fire, police, ambulance and hospital staff - what about breakdown recovery people? Staff in recreational facilities? Restaurant and cafe workers?

juneybean · 02/04/2010 22:24

Books.... I've heard of them but....

AvadaKedavra · 02/04/2010 22:28

No shopworker is forced to work Sundays, you can opt out.

I don't believe in the Jesus story and think in this day and age of equality for all, that to "penalise" (for want of a better word) all the other people who also don't believe it is wrong.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 02/04/2010 22:38

The law says you can opt out and not be treated unfavourably. In reality it doesn't happen. Not in my experience anyway.

I don't understand why people feel 'penalised' for not being able to shop on Sundays.

runnybottom · 02/04/2010 22:41

You think thats bad...all the pubs and offies closed here today!

Don't know why other peoples religion means one can't have a pint today or buy milk on sunday.

Katz · 02/04/2010 22:51

I don't like sunday opening, i agree it should be about family time and doing things together.I don't see why we need to be able to shop round the clock in stores.

Someone further up said they'd like to see all bank holidays got rid of and have 2 days extra annual leave to use when they liked - you do realise we currently have 8 bank holidays a year?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 02/04/2010 23:36

But if you don't like, or want, Sunday opening, there's nobody forcing you to go shopping, is there? Stay home with the telly off, go for the traditional "Sunday drive", read the Bible together, whatever floats your boat.

And let those who are happy to work on a Sunday, work on a Sunday. Ditto those who want/prefer to shop then.

ouryve · 03/04/2010 00:02

We like our family time on a Sunday. We use it to go shopping together It certainly beats sitting round the house getting pissed off with each other while the kids go loopy because it's raining yet again.

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 03/04/2010 00:14

I'm being dragged for a pub lunch on Sunday so the pubs are open.

I really don't see why the shops can't stay closed for a few days a year, it's not every blardy week now is it. I think they have become alot more greedy since they were allowed to open on Sundays. Customer service has, in most shops, gone completely out of the window. They should all stay closed on a sunday once a month to give the staff a rest and to give our bank balances a break.

ScaredOne · 03/04/2010 02:31

I don't mind if shops are closed this Sunday, I was actually surprised they were open today. Coming from Germany, shops close every holiday, very early every day and every Sunday. Absolutely hate it.
Sure it sucks to have to work at inconvenient times but some people need it. My mum worked shift. She is a nurse so of course she knew that she would have to do so but sometimes her long commute and her stupid hours made it impossible to shop. Now she has better hours and doesn't have to worry about it anymore as much as she used to but I am sure being a single mum with shifts it would have been nice for her if shops would have been open every day (i.e. not closed on Sundays) and longer than 6pm (which has changed now but they still close earlier than here).

It also seems so inconvenient to close shops on one of the days that most other people are off, doesn't it? I would make sure to, if I have to close a whole day, do it some other day as the weekend are the time most people will manage to come along.

Being a Christian country though I don't have a problem with stuff being closed for a few days. In germany shops are closed from Midday on Christmas eve till the 27th. You can imagine how crazy people go just before that. You know how it is, a few days without having the chance to shop might mean you will have to starve

funkybuddah · 03/04/2010 07:37

Its 2 days a year that shops close, 2! If you can't cope with it then you have a problem.

My team and I are all so happy to be closed tomorrow, its the one time of year we can all go out, get hammered without working with a hangover.

mumzy · 03/04/2010 08:35

I think supermarkets can open on Easter Sunday but they have to pay their staff triple time so financially unviable hence why they are closed and not because they are good Christians!

dizzydixies · 03/04/2010 08:36

its hardly and emergency service is it?!?!

Mumzy, shops over a certain square footage are not allowed to open on Easter Sunday.

It's sad how shopping seems to be our national sport nowadays.

FleurDelacour · 03/04/2010 09:00

Late night shopping and Sunday trading have helped working families enormously. I could not have worked and run a home under the opening hours my mother had to contend with.

The issue here seems not to be Sunday opening really but Tesco's domination. That is down to town councils' planning decisions and shoppers' habits.
