to expect Kwikfit to repair the fault?

Took DH's car in for a service. Told them the mainbeam headlight bulb needed replacing. They charged £10 for it.

Got it home and neither headlight works now. Sidelights and fog lights, yes, but not the main beam. Took it back and they say they don't "do" electrics and all they did was replace the bulb so it's not their fault. We must take it soemwhere else to be fixed. They did refund the 10 quid, however.

My point is that it was OK (bar the bulb) when I took it in, and now neither works. Can they just wash their hands of it?

You told them the bulb needs replacing. That they seem to have done.

Have you checked the fuse. Would be the most likely culprit if both are not working. In fact I'll stick money on it.

clam · 02/04/2010 17:15

Good point. Will do. Are there separate fuses for each function of the lights? As in fog lamps vs mainbeam vs full beam etc..

Depends on the car - but mostly yes for safety so a one fuse going will not leave you with no lights.

What car do you have?

Tinnitus · 02/04/2010 17:18

You got your tenner back?????

I took mine in with a leaky radiator once and they put some stuff on a dodgy looking bit, turns out it was a hose leading out of the radiator and when I took it back they said they would have to charge me again for fixing it as I had said it was the radiator so it was my fault they hadn't got it.

I was way to angry to point out that if I was that good a mechanic then I would have fixed the problem myself. but the best bit was when they said they wanted money off me for the second consultation!!!! When I refused they walked of with my keys. by sheer chance I had the other set and got in, drove of their property and went back for my set. Once they had lost their bargaining chip of having my car hostage they threw them at me ungraciously.

Still never got my money back though.

Hubby says if they didnt plug it in properly it wont work, is it a newish car. And he says its nothing to do with fuse as sidelights run off same fuse. Do you have the new bulb and know anyone who can try putting it in for you.

Tinnitus · 02/04/2010 17:27

I should point out that was not quick fit.

Tiredmumno1 · 02/04/2010 17:29

And seeyouok its only fog lamps that run off a seperate fuse.

VengefulKitty · 02/04/2010 17:34

YABU.

YABU to expect Kwik Fit to fix anything!

Every time I have taken a car there they have made the problem worse or caused another problem. Have not used them since 2001 as a result.

Lesson: never go to Kwik Fit.

southeastastra · 02/04/2010 17:35

go to halfords for lights they only charge a quid to change them

clam · 02/04/2010 18:01

It's a Clio. And have quizzed DH for more details and apparently they put the new bulb in and it blew straightaway. This is why they say there's a problem with the electrics. And DH now reckons that all the lights worked when he drove it last night, apart from the blown bulb. Which indicates that it's not the fuse, surely?

I'm hacked off that they gave it back to us without telling us there was this problem. As it was daylight when we collected it, we could easily have been caught out away from home in the dark with no working headlights.

And the reception area was filthy! No dancing men in overalls, either. Just a few sulky men looking like they were being put-upon, having to mend people's cars.

Dh says you have a short (somewhere along that wire it will be broken) thats why its shorting out. Any side street garage should sort it out.

clam · 02/04/2010 18:34

Oh, thanks for that Mr Tired!
