My daughter-in-law has sixty six pairs of shoes and boots, half a wardrobe of coats and more than one hundred handbags..........

Fel1x · 02/04/2010 20:03

I've got 2 boys and they both always have 2 pairs of shoes each - one clarks and in winter one pair of snow boots/wellies, in summer a pair of crocs too
They only have one coat each. Its perfectly easy to wash and have dry for the next day. I've just put their coats in to wash now and will be dry well before morning.

I'd buy your DD shoes and wellies for now and then wait till weather warms up for the sandals in case she grows again!

tassisssss · 02/04/2010 20:04

OP, as roisin says boys are WAY easier. I had a boy first and until he needed trainers for sports one pair of clarks shoes (doodles in the summer)and wellies/slippers was all he had!

I now have 2 toddler girls and they have boots (because they're just so cute!), pretty shoes for with dresses and (partly coz they were down to £6 in the clarks sale) sensible in-between shoes. And then in the summer there's sensible doodles, practical crocs and pretty sandals.

As for coats, my older ones managed with one-ish per season but dd2 is SUCH a clarty madam she does need (at least) 2 so I'm thankful for all her gorgeous hand-ons as she permanently has one in the wash (maybe something linked to the fact that the older 2 didn't eat choc and junk the way "spoilt probably last child" does.)

NonnoMum · 02/04/2010 20:10

I agree.

One pair of 'proper' shoes for most of the time.
But they look a bit freaky with jeans, so a pair of trainers or doodles or crocs for casual.
And wellies are 50p from the charity shop.

Oh, and ballet shoes for her ballet lessons, cos she just can't do the steps in her wellies...

MiladyDeWinter · 02/04/2010 20:14

Poor DS has just one pair of shoes, blue / grey from Clarks. But he is two and they go with everything and are very hard-wearing. Summer will be a problem as he is autistic and very particular about his feet. Hated last years' Doodles. He will be the odd child in winter shoes with shorts

DD is 9 and has black winter school boots which are on the verge of being thrown out, some silver ballet slipper type shoes and sandals from last year which are were too big then and "weekend" pink and silver cheap converse things from Next. School wouldn't mind if she turned up wearing those from what I've seen but I'll get her something decent for the warmer weather.

Both children had only one warm winter coat as it is perfectly possible to wash and dry them overnight in the winter when the heating is on

ruddynorah · 02/04/2010 20:14

well yes your dd only needs one pair of shoes and one coat.

but it is nice to have more. dd has lots of shoes and lots of coats. shoes mainly m&s (i work there so get discount) and primark (£4 a pair) and her coats are all ebay.

shoes-

1x wellies
1x silver party shoes
1x trainers
1x blue and white canvas
1x pink check canvas
1x pink spotty canvas
1x blue smart shoe
1x brown suede boot

coats-

1x ski style jacket for serious cold
1x normal winter coat
1x green duffle style
1x pink woollen old fashioned style smart
1x rain mac

plus several gilet/body warmers/fleeces

all of the above will then go back on ebay to re coup the cost and replace with next size up

AmazingBouncingFerret · 02/04/2010 20:16

Oh dear I fear im a bit excessive then, my DS has 3 pairs of trainers (cheapy ASDA ones) 1 pair of those grey canvas shoe things. a pair of slippers, snowboots, 1 pair of good clarks shoes, and no wellies because I thought id lost one so threw the other away and then found the missing one the next day. As for coats he has 2 lightweight ones, a waterproof "mac" type thing, and a padded cold weather one. He doesnt need all these though, I just like buying them for him. (please excuse format of my comment for my enter key has broken )

Sandymag · 02/04/2010 20:19

Dds (8&5) also have slow growing feet although a recent spurt has
meant the youngest has caught up so no more passing on. Shoe requirements haven't changed much since they were 2-3. They have
1x Clarks school shoes
1x M&S school pumps
1x Clarks leather knee boots.
1x Shoezone wellies.
1x Monsoon sale/Next sparkly flats for disco/fancy dress parties.
1x Next trainers
They'll have have leather sandals for school after Easter, and probably need another cheap pair by the Summer hols plus some canvas pumps.
I always buy next-size-up coats so they last and can be passed on. They each have a waterproof quilted coat, a smart fleece fabric jacket, a bodywarmer and a fold-up summer jacket.
Dh hasn't a clue, just loves his girls looking lovely and appropriatly dressed for the weather/occasion so they're comfy and can enjoy whatever's going on.

vaganova · 02/04/2010 20:22

Yabu, three coats; a 'dress' coat, a warm anorak for messier outdoor play/walks and a raincoat.
Shoes I agree, but depends on age also. Trainers, no.

Maveta · 02/04/2010 20:26

my 3yo ds has

one pair of vans (velcro for nursery)
one pair of converse (lace up so rarely worn)
one pair of wellies
one pair of crocs for summer

will get some good sandals for summer though am tempted to send him to nursery in crocs as they are comfy and easy to clean (dh has to scrub his shoes everyday they come home so caked in dirt)

luckily where we live we can get away with vans type shoes all winter (except for rainy days) - bought several pairs of expensive clarks before realising it was a pointless waste of money as he outgrows them so fast and has no real need for ´smart´ shoes.

we are drowning in jackets as he gets hand me downs from a cousin 2 yrs older but we normally buy him a winter jackets before sil passes them on so then there´s a surplus.

BelleDameSansMerci · 02/04/2010 20:27

Ah, but I didn't actually say how many my DD (2.6) had - just how many I think she needs...

She actually has about 12 pairs of shoes and boots (maybe more) and has at least five coats. Again, maybe more. She just doesn't need them all!

Fruitysunshine · 02/04/2010 20:37

My kids and stepkids love helping choose their shoes and clothes. It is something they can make their mark on.

My 2yr old got new shoes the other day. We measured her and the lady brought out 3 pairs in her size and my budget, DD tried them all on and pointed to her favourite pair. Job done.

An interest in clothes and shoes can start as young as that. It is good that they can learn to make decisions regarding what they wear after all they have to be comfortable in it and as they get older it is also an expression of who they are.

You can never have too many shoes.

EasterBilby · 02/04/2010 20:53

My DD 2.8 has a pair of trainers and a pair of wellies.
I hate the trainers but they were the only vaguely suitable ones I could afford in Clarks. The wellies are one size too big but it doesn't really matter with wellies and they'll last longer. She'd happily wear wellies 24/7. We had a long discussion last night about why she can't wear wellies to bed.

I'd love it if she had some pretty shoes for parties but we can't afford them.

Coats, she has 2. One smart one, one fleece lined raincoat. For day to day outings we usually layer her up with jumpers rather than spoil her best coat. Luckily my Mum and I are good at knitting so DD has a vast array of cardies and jumpers. If only we could make shoes. Slippers, yes, shoes, no.

nappyaddict · 02/04/2010 21:07

Ooooh I wish I knew someone who could make DS some knitted slippers.

I think shoes look fine with jeans as long as they aren't really clumpy ones.

Fel1x Do you have a tumble drier cos I can never get DS' thick winter coat dry for the next day.

rusmum · 02/04/2010 21:33

both my dd have several (6 PLUS) PAIRS OF SHOES AND 4-5 COATS/JACKETS BUT THEN I DONT BUY EVERYTHING NEW!! GET WHAT YOU NEED NEW AND TOP UP IN CHAITY SHOPS.

MiladyDeWinter · 02/04/2010 21:45

at people knowing how many shoes their older teenagers own. My parents didn't know how many GCSEs or A Levels I took let alone the subjects or grades.

But they were very generous to let me study for them whilst living under their roof and giving them the equivalent of a proper salary in housekeeping from a part-time job

EasterBilby · 02/04/2010 22:55

nappyaddict, if I ever get organised enough to actually sell any of the things I make I'll let you know.

Then maybe I could afford to buy DD party shoes... Or maybe when she's bigger and wants party shoes (not just wellies) I might be able to explain that if she stops running off with the balls of wool when I'm trying to make things that I'll be able to sell them to buy her shoes.

ravenAK · 02/04/2010 23:05

I think it depends on how you stand on cheap shoes & hand me downs.

My dc clearly have far too many shoes!

Ds is in school so has 2 x school shoes, 2 x trainers, wellies, & PE plimsolls. I think that's about right - OK, he doesn't technically need 2 pairs of school shoes, but we are pretty disorganised so I prefer to buy 2 pairs from somewhere cheap rather than one 'good' pair, thereby saving panics in the morning.

I have absolutely no idea how many pairs dd1 & dd2 have - 2 or 3 pairs of everyday boots each, stripey plimsolls from Next, wellies & at least one 'nice' pair of shoes each.

In my defence, many of them are handed down to me, & all of them are passed on if still in a fit state when both dds have worn them!

annielouisa · 02/04/2010 23:27

My DGD3 is a bit of an imelda Marcos when it comes to shoes and boots. They are all new so no hand me downs. I think she has:

Shoes : 3

Boots: 5 suede and leather

Trainers: 2

Crocs: 4 various colours

Wellies: 2

Slippers: 3 (1 pair at ours)

Sandals: 2

My DD4 is a step child and spent her childhood in hand me down shoes and ill fitting clothes so DGD3 was never going to anything but well dressed and well co-ordinated. DD4 was bullied terribly about the way she looked and she has loved buying nice things for her DD1 & DD2.

imaginewittynamehere · 03/04/2010 00:02

Dd1 who is 3.5 has:

1 pair shoes
1 pair crocs
1 pair wellies

1 warm coat
1 waterproof coat

her feet haven't grown since she got her shoes in September & even then I think anymore is an indulgence rather than a necessity. I am shocked at the number of pre-schoolers who seem to have shoes to match outfits; there again it seems faintly ridiculous to me in grown women let alone children who will grow out of them.

babbi · 03/04/2010 08:47

Carrieda babi said "nice day out!

bloody hell your dd must be better behaved in shoe shops than mine.

i hate shoe shopping with her "

Couldn't agree more Carrie , yesterday with DD (4YO ) looking for shoes put years on me .....

Bonsoir · 03/04/2010 08:52

I would have thought that anyone needs:

Wellies
Slippers
Trainers
Proper leather shoes

all year round, plus, in winter:

Leather boots

and, in summer,

Sandals
Flip flops

JannerBird · 03/04/2010 09:12

Haven't read the whole thread so apologies if someone else has asked. How many pairs of shoes has your DP got? I bet he's got more than one pair that has to do everything!

DastardlyandSmugly · 03/04/2010 09:16

YANBU

DD (19m) has a pair of boots, a pair of trainers, a pair of Converse, a pair of wellies, a pair of slippers and a pair of party shoes. I'm also going to get her some Crocs and action sandals for summer.

She also has a puffa coat, a fleece, a mac, a jerkin and a (very very frivolous) fluffy coat for parties.

I think you're being extremely reasonable.
