dd 2.9, is ready for new shoes

i think she needs 3 pairs at least

trainers,to go with jeans etc
shoes.to go with dresses and skirts etc
and wellies. for rainy days

and ideally 2 coats

dh thinks she doesn't need 3 different types of footwear

The Op is talking about a pre-schooler tho

I think we all agree that shoes multiply when they are at school. Actually all of mine also have a pair of shoes for PE at school - pumps or trainers for juniors.

Of course you must do what you want - but no 2yo needs more than shoes and wellies IMO.

OTOH I am not big on matching outfits and shoes etc (not for me or the DC )

Nice post brassband. My DC wear trainers for sport and sporty clubs - no use running tound at Beavers in your smart school mary-janes.

TeenyTinyToria · 02/04/2010 18:04

Dd (9mths) and Ds (3yrs) both have three coats - dd because she has ds's hand-me-down and two presents, and ds because he has one I bought him, and two rain macs as presents.

If it wasn't for the presents, ideally they would only have one coat each and a rain mac for ds.

Ds has one pair of shoes and a pair of wellies. Occasionally in the summer I will get him a pair of cheap sandals for running about in.

Pozzled · 02/04/2010 18:08

My DD (20 months) has one pair of clarks trainers and wellies. No way would I buy more than that even if I could afford it, there's no point when she grows out of them so quickly, and I honestly don't see the point in matching shoes to outfits at that age.

She also has one coat and a snowsuit. I might consider buying her two coats next year to help with washing.

onebadbaby · 02/04/2010 18:18

Clary- dd wears smart coat to parties, visiting grandma or similar relatives, shopping trips, meals out etc (school coat and playing out coat are always filthy as dd explains she sits on it in the playground).
Anyway- I like to see her looking nice so she has lots of stuff- more than she needs, but we can afford it so why not?? I always ebay everything afterwards to help pay for more stuff.

Clary · 02/04/2010 18:22

no, why not indeed, I was just curious.

I guess we don't do any of those things really, or at least not in a way that needs a special coat!

I just wash the school coat when it's dirty; once clean it is fine for calling on Grandma! (or maybe not - see my post about her many many coats!! )

Fruitysunshine · 02/04/2010 18:33

My 17yr old has

1xpair good shoes (suits, etc)
1xflipflops
5xtrainers

My 9yr old has
4 x pump style
1 x school shoes
2 x slippers
1 x wellies
1 x Ugg boots
3 x trainers

My 2yr old has
1 x shoes
1 x slippers
1 x wellies
1 x trainers

And that's it.

sweetkitty · 02/04/2010 18:36

My lot (5, 4 and 20 months) have at least

  • one old pair of playing in the garden trainers
  • one pair of decent trainers
  • wellies
  • crocs or boots depending on season
  • pair of shoes that can go with dresses etc

2 coats definitely at least mine have 3, a nice coat and 2 everyday coats, one is always in the wash. Everyday coats can cost about £7 from Asda need not be expensive.

WorzselMummage · 02/04/2010 18:39

Dd needs 2 pairs of shoes

no one needs pairs of shoes for every different occasion. It us nice you have them yes, it's not a need though.

roisin · 02/04/2010 18:42

ROFL at this thread! Don't their feet grow so fast, how can you keep track of so many pairs of footwear?! As pre-schoolers mine had 1 pair of shoes or Clarks Doodles in summer at a time, which they grew out of every 3-4 months. Plus wellies for puddle splashing.

It is easier with boys, I know, cos 'matching' doesn't matter so much.

roisin · 02/04/2010 18:44

I'm with Clary - as usual. My boys are 10 and 12 now and each have
school shoes
trainers (taken to school for PE as well)
football boots
walking boots
beach shoes for watersports

When my older dd's were little they each had
one pair of shoes and
one pair of wellies

Their feet grew so quickly that it was pointless (and waaaaaaaay too costly) to buy more.

Dd3 (2yrs 8mths) has extraordinary feet and has been the only one of my children who actually wrecks the shoes before she grows out of them.
Her feet just simply don't grow - she got a pair of ankle boots last September which still fit beautifully.

As a result she has
Ankle boots
Crocs (bought last summer and still fit!)
Trainers (Xmas pressie)
Ballet pumps (Xmas pressie)
Wellies (bought last summer and still fit!)
Slippers

She could quite easily manage with just the boots and wellies though.

She does have two coats, nothing to do with having a dress coat though - she has one warm padded winter coat and a lighter, waterproof jacket.

YANBU though if you can afford it

PandaG · 02/04/2010 19:00

My 10 yo DS has

school boots (goretex lined, £££ but he wears them all the time, really worth the money)
school trainers
home trainers
sandals (lasted 2 summers already, and may do a 3rd!)
cheapy crocs for camping and beach (at least a year old)
wellies
slippers

DD 8 has

school shoes
school trainers
home trainers
boots (hand me downs, worn at weekends - I may have bought some as Christmas present if hadn't been given these)
party shoes - for parties and church
cheapy crocs - second year of wear
wellies
slippers

so slightly more than Clary's tribe, but they all last ages

Marne · 02/04/2010 19:00

Dd2 (4) has, wellies, shoes for nursery (a bit worn out), a pair of boots (to wear with skirts/dresses) and i have just bought her some Kickers sandals for the summer (which are slightly too big).

Dd1 (6) has 3 pairs of boots (2 ugg type and 1 hush puppies), school shoes, 2 pairs of trainers and 1 pair of summer pumps.

They both have 3 coats , 1 for school, 1 for best and 1 for playing in the garden.

elvislives · 02/04/2010 19:02

I think YABU to say they need 3 prs of footwear and 2 coats. They need 1 pair shoes and 1 coat.

My DD (3) actually has 5 coats

  1. thick furry-lined gaberdine type anorak
  2. fleecy type lined coat with hood (not waterproof)
  3. padded anorak
  4. plastic mac with fleece lining
  5. summer-weight mac with cotton lining

(1) came from Woolies last sale (2) from Sainsbos (3) £7 from Asda (4) from Primark and (5) in a sale at a Designer outlet

She has a pair of proper shoes (Clarks this time, Startrite before) and a pair of wellies.

PandaG · 02/04/2010 19:03

DS has one waterproof coat, plus a variety of fleeces and jackets he wears either underthe waterproof or on their own

DD has a thick coat, a waterproof, and a school fleece, she did also have a lovely smart coat, handed down from PurpleTurtle's daughter, but she has grown out of it and we've passed it on again.

CantSupinate · 02/04/2010 19:17

Roison that's just it, like someone else said, my kids have feet that just don't grow! They do wear out shoes before they need the next size up. Not just 8yo DD, but 5yo DS, and 2yo DS according to the measuring tapes none of them changed show size between May '09 and Feb 2010.

NorbertTheNutjob · 02/04/2010 19:20

Be very careful when encouraging your daughter to think in terms of multiple pairs of shoes or she will grow up like mine - I believe the last count was 42 pairs.....

MrsBadger · 02/04/2010 19:23

dd only has shoes and wellies, she'll have sandals too in the summer

2 coats in circulation so if she gets drenched in one the other is dry
both are second hand though

morningpaper · 02/04/2010 19:29

This is the most boring marital argument ever

What's the issue here exactly? Just buy her whatever shoes you want. Why are you arguing about it?

Clary · 02/04/2010 19:32

Thanks roisin

Actually I forgot about footie boots, DS2 has one pair for astro and one pair for grass, so that ups our shoe count significantly

lucky1979 · 02/04/2010 19:35

My DD is 5 months and she has a pair of party shoes, a pair of baby Vans trainers, some piglet slippers and about 5 pairs of assorted booties which she kicks off at every opportunity. She also has 4 coats (two with hoods and two without).

TBH she'll probably have fewer things once she's older!

Takver · 02/04/2010 19:38

DD got the best pair of boots ever in a hand-me-down bag - they're meant to be riding boots (so she loves them) they are brown ankle boots with elastic (so they're smart & look fine for school) AND they're made of totally impervious rubbery type material (so she can fall in ditches all she likes & still have dry feet). So really, all bases covered in one, apart from sandals (which given the recent summers havent seen much use . . .)

Sadly I doubt I'll be buying more myself when she grows out of them cos I looked on the web and they sell for about £50!

Coats - we do have multiples - generally aim for one respectable one for school plus a tatty one for getting muddy (latter hand-me-down, former generally bought new or good s/h from ebay). Plus a thin waterproof always.

notsochickchickchicken · 02/04/2010 19:42

When my two were that age they had one pair of shoes, one pair of wellies and slipper socks.
DD did have ballet and tap shoes at 3 though.
They had two coats though and probably a fleece jumper.

nooka · 02/04/2010 19:50

Well your dh is right, but I really can't see why on earth it matters given you have enough money for what you'd like, nor why a girl should need more shoes than a boy.

My two generally had two pairs of shoes on the go at any one time when they were small (wellies and shoes in the winter, shoes and sandals in the summer). With coats one at a time is plenty, a warm one in the winter and a raincoat in the summer. I always thought I was doing quite well if their shoes/clothes lasted the season before they were grown out of at that age.

Now they are older they have more footwear because they do more stuff and their feet grow so much slower, so they have winter boots (essential for were we live as there is often snow for months), a pair each of every day shoes (generally trainer types), sandals and then sports trainers (this season this includes football boots and basket ball trainers, and then whatever dd needs for softball, and maybe something different for ds to do climbing). I'll probably get them some walking boots too as it seems to make a real difference as to whether they are up for exploring.

Luckily neither of them are that fashion orientated, nor do we ever do anything that requires them to be so smart they need special shoes/coats.
