dd 2.9, is ready for new shoes

i think she needs 3 pairs at least

trainers,to go with jeans etc
shoes.to go with dresses and skirts etc
and wellies. for rainy days

and ideally 2 coats

dh thinks she doesn't need 3 different types of footwear

Oh and forgot slippers for around the house, as we have hard floors. And live in a hot country so 1 pair good Clarks sandals will be all she needs from May - Oct this year. I bought the slippers and wellies one size bigger which has worked well. She has needed more socks on for the cold when wearing the wellies anyway.

bronze · 02/04/2010 16:16

another with one pair shoes and wellies. They get an extra pair when they start school

But it really does depend on how much money you have.

The title says different to the op

The op I have no problem with if she has money to burn then as many shoes and coats as she wnt but the title makes me feel crap like we can't provide for our daughter properly

petisa · 02/04/2010 16:16

My dd's coat takes aages to dry, so we have a cheapie spare handmedown one too.

Pennies · 02/04/2010 16:19

My DDs are 4 & 5 and each have:

1 x school shoes
1 x school trainers
1 x school wellies
1 x home shoes
1 x party shoes (Xmas pres from Granny)
1 x home trainers
1 x wellies
1 x canvas summer shoes
1 x sandals (followed the silver theme - go with everything)
1 x home shoes
1 x beach shoes / croc style that they can paddle in the sea and at our local picnic spot in
1 x winter boots.

For things like beach shoes, party shoes that don't get wrong very often I buy slightly larger so they last for two years (beach) or one year (party shoes).

Seems a lot listed by that but they're looking very scuffed and worn so we do get a lot of use out of them! Also DD2 gets DD1's cast offs.

petisa · 02/04/2010 16:19

Party shoes are definitely an indulgence if you have the dosh imo, not a necessity at all. Their nice "proper" shoes will do just as well. Wellies and slippers only cost me 3 or 4 quid a pair.

Rockbird · 02/04/2010 16:19

I always thought toddlers needed a pair of shoes and a pair of wellies, till I had one. DD has proper buckle shoes, a pair of little Upsy Daisy boots, wellies and now some Doodles since the weather got a bit brighter . She generally has about three pairs of shoes at a time, one 'good' pair from Clarks (yeah, I know!) and a couple of run around pairs for nursery etc.

onebadbaby · 02/04/2010 16:20

Well my dd has-school shoes, ankle boots, trainers, party shoes and wellies- she has a smart coat, a school coat and a playing out coat.

MrsTittleMouse · 02/04/2010 16:21

She doesn't need three pairs of shoes, because my DDs do with less. And they only one coat each (they do dry quickly if needed).

To be honest, I believe in setting the bar low when they're young. As they get older, it only ever goes up, so the lower the expectations (clothes, presents etc.) when they're young, the better you are off for years to come!

Clary · 02/04/2010 16:23

My DC only had one pair of footwear plus wellies when they were pre-schoolers tbh.

And one coat.

Why bother with more when they grow so quickly?

Once they started school they moved to trainers as well for clubs (Beavers, footie etc) and weekends, mainly in an effort to keep school shoes decent!

Have walking boots now as well but not really wellies any more. So I guess we are up to 3 each.

LOL @ "smart coat" for a toddler. (Or come to that an 8yo!!) Mine have one winter padded jacket and one waterproof of the type that will scrunch into a rucksack for rainy summer days.

petisa · 02/04/2010 16:23

Whe dd's "good" startrite shoes get soaked or muddy, she has to wear her slippers to the supermarket or wellies to the park. I didn't know what shoe polish was for until I had her! The toes of her shoes are sooo scuffed there's no colour left on them, I have to get the polish out all the time! And there were only pink shoes left in her size so I had to get pink polish in the right colour from a special shoe shop, grr, it'll be navy ones next time if I get my way!

Clary · 02/04/2010 16:25

onebadbaby what's the smart coat for then? If she wears one to school and the other to play out??

(Reminds me of my MiL who once brought three coats with her when she came for a weekend )

petisa · 02/04/2010 16:30

Clary

My dd has a lovely smart wool coat - second hand from ebay for a tenner! My mum always says she looks like royalty in it (pmsl) and it is lovely but it takes aaaages to dry.

StealthPolarBear · 02/04/2010 16:30

DS has one pair of shoes and two pairs of wellies (one for nursery)
Wellies are always almost a size too big (as they don't do half sizes) so they last ages
Got him some doodles last summer, will probably do the same this time.
If his shoes are soaked he wears his wellies
Agree with whoever said even if you can afford it (and we can if we need to) what's the point when their feet grow so fast!
Hoping that as DD grows she'll be the same width as him so we can always use his old shoes as her emergency spare pair.
Wow I'm tight! He does have 3 coats though, 2 winter ones that he wore all of last winter and the winter we're just coming out of, plus a lighter coat for warmer weather. Oh and about 5 rain macs which vanish to god knows where

silentcatastrophe · 02/04/2010 16:57

DD 1's new school shoes will last her well into the summer. She also has a pair of wellies and a pair of slippers. I will prob get the children a pair of cheapo crocs each for the summer. It's great to be able to indulge your children with fabulous footwear, but it's when they're teenagers that they're likely to wreck their feet. Children have sensible shoes. Teenagers have fashion.

muggglewump · 02/04/2010 17:06

DD has school shoes
Trainers
Converse (she wanted these for Christmas which was fine, but not a normal purchase)
She had boots but outgrew them and it's warm enough not to replace them, and they were instead of school shoes.

I buy from Shoezone/Asda so not expensive.
She'll have sandals for summer, and some fakey crocs. I don't expect to pay more than £15 for both.

She has three coats, One from Charity Shop, two handed down from neighbour, none are smart smart, but then we don't really go anywhere smart.

nancydrewrocks · 02/04/2010 17:06

DD who is 5 must have 20 + pairs of shoes

We were just looking through the Next catalogue as I wanted her to tell me what clothes she would wear (she is fussy and we are off on hols so she needs some summer bits)

he pointed out several outfits and then turned to the shoe page and said "now just let me choose shoes to match"!

I don't know where she gets it....

muggglewump · 02/04/2010 17:06

Oh and she won't wear wellies anymore, or she'd have had them too and did when younger.

nappyaddict · 02/04/2010 17:09

Don't really get the concept of party shoes. The kids don't really get dressed up for any of the parties we've been to cos they are at soft play places, leisure centres or halls where they'll be running around and playing games. Their normal shoes do just fine. Although I suppose once DS starts school he will have a pair of school shoes and a pair for out of school as well.

SusieCarmichael · 02/04/2010 17:09

my dd (4) has 2 raincoats 7 other various coats and more shoes than i can count! she has more than i do if i had a boy he would just have trainers school shoes and wellies!

brassband · 02/04/2010 17:11

She only needs the trainers if she is a chav.

CantSupinate · 02/04/2010 17:29

Nice, Brassband .

Look whatever makes you happy OP -- but it's not about need is it, but rather want, don't you think? Would this thread even exist if OP had a 2.5yo DS? I think that I will never understand obsession with woman's footwear.

DD (8yo) has

  • Coat 1: unsolicited gift from her step-granny

  • Coat 2: my impulse buy in a charity shop, when Coat 1 was still huge on her.

  • Conventional school shoes (only worn at Brownies formal events, so far)

  • Smart Black Boots that set me back 25 quid (Gasp, faint, shock) -- bought because her regular school shoes really weren't up to trekking to and from school in the snow, but I still worry that was ridiculously profligate of me to indulge her like that.

  • Slippers (bought new Jan. '09 and likely to last forever)

  • Sandals castoff from her brother

  • Wellies bought new in 2008 and likely to last another year or 2. We regularly do things like trek thru muddy fields, so very necessary!

  • Almost worn-out trainers bought new in May '09 -- well, their condition makes me feel better about buying the boots.

...and school plimsoles.

inveteratenamechanger · 02/04/2010 17:41

DD (2) has one pair of shoes (brown Clarks boys shoes) which she wears with everything - jeans, party dresses, the lot.

One pair of wellies.

One pair of slippers.

That's plenty! I can't be doing with keeping track of more pairs.

A snowsuit from Sainsbury's which she has lived in this winter.

She also has loads of handme down coats from her cousin, but really only wears the snowsuit.

muggglewump · 02/04/2010 17:45

I forgot slippers, DD has those too, £5 from Primark for Christmas, and she never flipping wears them

lifeas3plus1 · 02/04/2010 17:54

My Ds does not have any shoe's at all and he has about 5 coats.

But then he's 11 months so not walking properly yet and get's coats dirty in 10 minutes without even doing anything.

lucykate · 02/04/2010 17:58
