... but when I go to the hairdresser I do not want a head massage!

I went to the hairdressers yesterday and while washing my hair they put the conditioner on and then started a very slow, intense head massage. I was not in the mood for this! And I am not into massage anyway. I felt that I could not ask her to stop as that would have been insulting to her.

....urgh makes me feel all shivery to think of it.

Or am I unusual to not like this?

It's the best bit. As long as there is no talking! In fact it's the only bit (unless you are having colour done and are left alone with a mag) where you can relax and not have to make small talk if you don't want to! In fact I would consider paying for a proper indian head massage. No way I'm getting my kit off for a body one these days!

Anyway, OP,fake a bad back next time so you've got a reason not to sit with your head in a basin for ages - no ones insulted and everyone's a winner

DrNortherner · 31/03/2010 21:33

It's my favourite bit. I always want to tell her not to stop!

nappyzoneloveslindor · 31/03/2010 21:40

first time i was violated like this i hated it then the 2nd time i said not to and then changed hairdressers, my current one has started to do this now also but suprisingly i love it and wish dh would learn the art as i find it a bit sexy . In my defence they also serve red wine so its just a big thrill to go to the hairdressers these days!

dearprudence · 31/03/2010 21:47

Head massage = hideous.

My hairdresser knows I hate being messed with so he always tells the junior 'make it quick, comb conditioner through, no mucking about'. I appreciate what he's trying to do but I always feel like a bit of a bitch.

Worse than the head massage was the time they stuck the towel right in my ears to give them a little dry

biddyofsuburbia · 31/03/2010 21:54

rofl dearprudence at ear drying. nonono!

Pollyanna · 31/03/2010 21:57

yanbu I hate it too. I mentioned it to my stylist once and now the hairwasher person asks before massaging. I always say no [miserable old cow emoticon]

Can't bear being touched really by people! Quite like the inane chat though.

thisisyesterday · 31/03/2010 21:59

i LOVE having my hair played with

i HATE that massage thing. i was totally shocked the first time it happened and had to call my best friend and say "what's with the massage, did they do that to you too????" and they had and we were both outraged together

i really hate it.

badgermonkey · 31/03/2010 22:04

I hate it. I don't like being massaged! Someone's fingers all in your scalp? Yuk.

QQQ · 31/03/2010 22:05

Oo I love it did have a very vigorous one once when my head felt bruised for a few days after . Not been back there again. Could happily live without the chit chat.. never come across ear drying before yeuuuuch

LynetteScavo · 31/03/2010 22:07

I depends who does it...usually, it's just oK...sometimes its' awful. There used to be a lad who was sooo fatastic at them!

I have the forces conversation.

Hair washer; "So are you doing anything much arter having your hair done?"

Me "Not really, just picking up the kids from shcool, and taking them home for tea"

Hair washer; "What are you ahving for tea?"

Me; "I haven't decided yet"

Hair washer; "So what do you think you might have?"

Me; (thinking I really don't want to be taling about this) "Well maybe Spinache and ricotta canaloni, as we have all the ingredients in"

Hair washer "Whats' that then?"

Me; (Thinking, Oh,FFS, just shut up!) "Well You get some fresh pasta, and some spinach..............

Hair washer; "I had heard of that, I just didn't know what it was. Do you make it your self, then?"

Me; "No, I just expalined to you exactly what they do in the factory" (Not really, but that's what I wanted to say)

NettiespagettisMiniEggs · 31/03/2010 22:13

Yadnbu hate it, maybe if your neck wasn't 90degree angle to the rest of your body in one of those stupid basins and didn't feel like if she pressed any harder it might snap!!!!! So uncomfortable!!

Why oh why hasn't anyone designed a since that doesn't break necks??????

CoteDAzur · 31/03/2010 22:14

YANBU. I hate those unsolicited, stupid, slow, and wet head massages. Already, my head is tilted back in an uncomfortable angle, resting on what feels like a table edge. I don't want to spend a second more than necessary in that position, especially with thumbs pressing into my skull.

Why "massage" a bone, anyway? It's not like there are any muscles to unwind there.

NettiespagettisMiniEggs · 31/03/2010 22:15

Oops meant sink designed a sink!?!

Meglet · 31/03/2010 22:18

yabu! I can't afford a proper massage these days so I always hope they do a long head massage so I can relax a bit for a couple of minutes.

It's a pity I have long hair and don't need it cut very often.

campion · 01/04/2010 01:07

Last Saturday, me at hairdresser's basin:

' can you pad the neck thing?'

Big problem ( evidently) but new trainee shown flannel in plastic bag method.

Lean back at awkward angle.Back / neck ache.

'Is the water alright?'

'err - yes thanks'. Can never actually feel it at that point as hasn't reached scalp.

(God, it's a bit hot now but I'll bear it)

First lot of shampoo. Over-enthusiastic rubbing into scalp. Hmm.

More rinsing. More shampoo ( why??). Starts trying to break through my skull and pays particular attention to temples which I HATE anyone touching.

'err - could you press more lightly please?'

'Oh, sorry' ( she's a bit of a fussy cow)

Large lump of shampoo hits and blocks right ear. Go a bit deaf. More scrubbing.
Whoosh - water hits and trickles down ear. Less deaf.
Conditioner and - yes- the dreaded massage. They only started this about 5 or 6 years ago.Was there a book out or something?

Final rinse. Phew.

'Are you having your hair cut today?'

( No, just thought I'd come in here to be roughed up)

Hairdresser great, hairwash not but I'm another coward so don't say much.

YANBU in the slightest.

ZacharyQuack · 01/04/2010 01:48

Love scalp massage. Hate chatting. Just shut up and rub.

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 01/04/2010 06:39

I love the massage, but I do feel a little uneasy at how much I love the massage. Love the idea of something over my face to hide expressions of ecstasy.

My usual techniques to avoid the chatting are a) ask the hairdresser about themselves instead, it's way less effort to just listen (mine is 20 and can go on for hours about his love life and housemate dramas) and b) bring a book, keep open on lap, glance down between sentences.

Mine knows now, he makes conversation only for the first bit, then he leaves me alone to read while the colour does its thing.
Hairdresser is my biggest time alone treat these days.

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 01/04/2010 06:42

You know, someone should start a hairdressers with the gimmick being that their staff don't chat. Here's your chair, here's your glass of champagne, here's your magazine, you don't have to say or listen to a word for the next hour. You could charge a fortune.

NettiespagettisMiniEggs · 01/04/2010 06:58

I agree tortoiseonthehalfshell but would like to add the following to make it perfect:-)

redesigned sinks
to not need to take glasses off ( so world doesn't finish on tip of nose)

Ahh I'm booking in straight away!!

Enchilada81 · 01/04/2010 07:35

I love any kind of massage! especially head massages!

Last time I was in the hairdressers however, she rubbed the side of my head so hard with her boney fingers, it felt like she was trying to penetrate my temples! It really hurt but I'm too much of a wimp to say anything! lol

LoveBeingAMummy · 01/04/2010 07:57

I love head massages, hate it when you get someone that just does a few seconds.

mrsmindcontrol · 01/04/2010 08:04

YAdefinitelyNBU. I hate head massages. They are overly intimate and especially so when carried out by some oik young enough to be my son/daughter who would obviously rather be doing anything other than rubbing my saggy old head.

missmoopy · 01/04/2010 20:17

Crack on then tortoise, cos I will be your first customer. Canapes would be nice with the champers too!!

SlinkyGoober · 01/04/2010 20:23

I hate it too and also I have psoriasis so all that rubbing over perfumed crap conditioner into my scalp causes me big problems.

PuzzleRocks · 01/04/2010 20:25

MissMoopy, I love you. I have never admitted how incredibly fond of the massage I am.
