oof YANBU to add a "f*ck riiiiight off" too.

mingler · 31/03/2010 12:02

You are being very reasonable indeed in my opinion.

jeee · 31/03/2010 12:07

I'd go further than a mere YANBU, and suggest that you are morally right in your stance.

Jamie and steven are fine.... thats not what he wants... he wants to make it obvious that they are named after footballers, cara and gerrard are 2 suggestions!

Tell him you'll go with the idea if he lets you call the baby Arsene.

Pikelit · 31/03/2010 13:27

I put my foot down to ""Osvaldo Ardiles" being added to ds1's first and surname even though I was delighted that Spurs won the cup shortly before ds1 was born. I've always considered this sort of thing a self-indulgent burden to your child.

Oddly enough, ds1 (who grew up to be a chap who avoids drawing unnecessary attention to himself) once claimed he wouldn't have minded. Trust me. He would. He would also have hated me for not intervening before the naming nonsense got out of hand. Or at least as far as the Registrar.

So no, YANBU about footballer's names unless they are names that are perfectly nice in their own right and won't label your child as the son or daughter of an uber-fan.

MrsCosmopolite · 31/03/2010 13:52

YANBU in 10, 15, 20 years time nobody is going to know who these football players are but your kid would be stuck with a goofy name.

Quite like Cara. Gerrard - noooooo!
Play him at his own game so to speak; find some football players names you DO like and offer those?

Pikelit · 31/03/2010 14:30

"Matt le"? That simply isn't a name! Although Matt Le Hoople has a certain malapropist charm.

my DH thankfully isnt a football fan so we dont have this problem. if he was i would also tell him to piss off and choose a nice name not related to football

i was pregnant at 20 and my then boyfriend suggested Riise i said no and said i dont mine rhys/reece as a compromise. i MCd that preg tho so not an issue in the end

KurriKurri · 31/03/2010 14:37

Ooh matt le Tissier - I remember him in his Southampton days, nice man!

The risk with naming after footballers, is you never know when they are going to be all over the papers for doing something 'disgraceful', I feel a bit sorry for all the little Maradonas out there.

cakeywakey · 31/03/2010 14:43

Watch out that he doen't try to get your DCs initials to spell LFC or anything similar

HoopsAndBelly · 31/03/2010 14:45

YANBU I had to fend off the whole of the Liverpool team, he wanted Gerrard as a middle name, it took alot of heated discussions before we came up with our little boys name........we decided on Benjamin Scott, and we are sticking to that.....stand your ground!!!

Angelcat666 · 31/03/2010 14:46

YANBU

HoopsAndBelly · 31/03/2010 14:46

cakey had to fend that off too, his surname starts with C so he wanted to call him Liam Frankie!!!!!
