Oh I know I am but I have an irrational dislike of online wedding lists

Got one for a wedding in May. Am very fond of bride and groom and wish them the very best and I would have bought them a gift willingly. But receiving a wedding list card with the invitation made me slightly bristly. But tonight I grumbled a bit but got the card out to a ctuallychoose something. And got the message 'Sorry we are not open yet. Please try later'

!!

Look it's your bloody list not mine. Why aren't you open? Am I going to have to dither about for weeks before I get the right to buy you a present?

I know it's convenient and sensible and I do like John Lewis but FFS I am doing you a favour not the other way round.

Am seriously considering buying them a toaster just to make my feelings clear.

But I won't.

Probably.

I had an online wedding list but only because my family and friends are distributed all over the country and many weren't able to make it on the day. I had lots of requests and as DH and I were already living together it made sense so that people weren't wasting money on stuff we already had. It rankled me, I hated it to start with. It felt grabby and wrong. So I compromised by adding a note to each invite that we only required the pleasure of their company, there was no expectation for anyone to come bearing gifts but if they chose to do so and wanted some guidance here was a list of a few useful things. Nothing was over 20 quid and every single item was purchased . I have loverly family and friends and now 10 years later am still using all the really useful gifts we were given and I'm reminded how lucky I am every time I use them.

There are upsides to wedding lists

I added up the items on one a few years back and it came to £9000!!

Recently had one from Canada, and had great fun tracing the same items at bargain prices. Most of the prices were inflated by about 30% on the wedding list. I guess that happens all the time, as you have a captive clientelle!
