We (dh,dc and I) are ment to be going to a family gathering tomorrow for dh gran's birthday (she's 90)

We have just found out sil (she's 21) is off work with bronchitis,
dh said to her 'i guess your not going to be coming now?'
to which she replied 'oh no i'm still coming'
.
I don't want my dc, dd is nearly 4 and ds is 4 months old getting bronchitis, it's dd birthday thursday so i really don't want a poorly birthday girl

Aibu being pissed off that she putting everyone health at risk just because she doesn't want to miss out?

Would it be wrong to say were not coming now bbecause of the

Bronchitis isn't infectious is it ?

compo · 27/03/2010 20:53

well I guess she doesn't want to miss her gran's 90th birthday
she'll be feeling shite so maybe cut her some slack?

Pikelit · 27/03/2010 20:54

YANBU. But I'd suggest pressure is put onto SIL to stay away from where she can infect people. Why should the healthy ones miss the family gathering?

mrsmindcontrol · 27/03/2010 20:54

Bronchitis is not infectious in itself. It's usually the after effect of a bad cold which is obviously infectious but likely that she is way past that stage now. YAB a bit U and more than a little precious IMO.

greyhoundgal · 27/03/2010 20:55

Its not infectious so yes YABU

Well the bronchitis isn't but the virus that caused it could well be if she is still infectious from that. That being it is probably just a cold and you can't really avoid them if they are doing the rounds.

Pikelit · 27/03/2010 20:55

I used to think bronchitis wasn't infectious. Apparently it is. If you get the infectious sort, of course.

thefinerthingsinlife · 27/03/2010 20:56

I wasn't sure but i did check before i started the thread and it came up with

Bronchitis is extremely contagious. The virus can be transmitted by the means of cough, sneeze, and yes, even by simply touching the things that has been touched by the person infected.

dizzydixies · 27/03/2010 20:56

it depends on which form of bronchitis she has - I'd be more worried about elderly granny

Vallhala · 27/03/2010 20:58

Bronchitis is contagious. I think that YABU, expressing concern only for your children and not appearing to be worried that your SIL is visiting a 90 year old lady whilst she has the condition.

nellie12 · 27/03/2010 20:59

Its a complication of the cold/flu like virii.
So the cold would be infectious. That lives on hard surfaces for 24hours.(apparently)

Whether your dc get the cold is another matter. But I probably wouldn't be happy about exposing 4mo to a virus that has caused bronchitis(if that makes sense)

Tbh I would be concerned about her infecting your Gran too since she's 90.

JackRabbitBauer · 27/03/2010 21:00

YANBU, bronchitis is incredibly contagious and even without your DC's around I would have thought it would be very serious for a 90 yr odl to catch it.

She needs to be told to catch herself on and think of others.

thefinerthingsinlife · 27/03/2010 21:01

If i am wrong and it's not contagious i hold my hands and apologise.

It's not a party as such it's a small gathering about 10 of us having a bit of cake and a few sandwiches so it's not like it's a big bash she'd be missing out on.

I promise i'm not precious about my dc, if was just a cold or something i wouldnt care less, but bronchitis is a bit different.

thefinerthingsinlife · 27/03/2010 21:04

I'm not just concerned a bout my dc'd i did write:
'Aibu being pissed off that she putting everyone health at risk just because she doesn't want to miss out?'

Bronchitis isn't contagious as its a symptom, not a cause. It means an inflammation of the bronchi in the lungs. Its caused usually by a virus such as the flu or rhinovirus. Those viruses are contagious, bronchitis is not.

saslou · 27/03/2010 22:05

There is nothing wrong with the OP worrying primarily about the health of her children. Adults can say for themselves whether they are willing to be exposed to family members with contagious illnesses. Children rely on their parents to protect them. It is not being precious,it is being a good mother imo

thefinerthingsinlife · 28/03/2010 18:09

Update - Sil didn't come
