at the supermarket today i recersed out of parking space and turned to face the exit which meant i was also facing the entrance doors of the shop where there are double yellow lines. there was a car parked there meaning i couldn't pull out and another car couldn't get past. the reversed and took another route but there were other cars behind me so i couldn't reverse. the woman in the car was looking and looking away so she was aware i was there. i wound down my window and beeped the horn to catch her attention. she opened her door and before i could even ask her to move she shouted "disabled can park wherever they like". and closed her door. her car was switched off and tehre was no-one getting in or out so i presume she was waiting for someone. i shouted over that she was causing a problem for other drivers and she opened her door again, i said " could you not just move a bit further up" which would leave the junction clear. she just said no and shut the door. by this point one of the cars behind me had reversed and the other was starting to aswell so i just had to wait and do the same. all the while this lady sat on. there were 6 empty disabled parking bays that she could have used and then pulled up at the door to collect her passenger.

was i being unreasonable? or is she actually allowed to park there?

fwiw i do think she could have been a bit more mannerly about it but perhaps someone had already said something so she had her heckles up.

YANBU. Disabled can't park on double yellows. She was being a lazy arse.

Tiredmumno1 · 25/03/2010 18:18

I didnt think disabled drivers are allowed to park wherever they want. Yanbu this just sounds like a case of ignorance

BooyhooNOTboohoooORbooyou · 25/03/2010 18:19

i didn't think double yellow parking was allowed either, but wasn't sure if it was allowed, perhaps, for dropping off/collecting. but then she was parked with her engine off so this couldn't even be counted as that.

Ugh, someone did this the other day, parked right next to the entrance to the store in front of my space so I couldn't get out, and I couldn't reverse as there was a helpful lamppost behind me.
I got out and asked him to pull forward as I couldn't get out. He wasn't happy as he 'was waiting for his elderly mother who couldn't walk far' but I pointed out that he could wait somewhere else and drive over when she came out.
I resisted pointing out that it might have been more helpful to do the shopping with/for her....
Twat.

it bothered me more that she was so rude about it, whether she was entitled to park there or not.

People with a disabled badge can park on double yellows for up to 3 hours, but it is really intended for situations where there is no other parking - eg outside a shop where there is no car park for example - not where there are ample disabled parking spaces!

THe woman was rude, and YANBU

MrsC2010 · 25/03/2010 19:57

You can park on double yellows with a diabled badge provided you are not causing an obstruction. Which she very obviously was, so that and the fact she could have sat in a space and was clearly an arse so YANBU!

BooyhooNOTboohoooORbooyou · 25/03/2010 20:31

thank you both for setting me straight on that. as i said i wasn't sure of the laws regarding disabled badge holders.

Even if this is the case that blue badge holders can park on double yellow lines, YANBU as she was clearly causing an obstruction which could have been avoided if she'd moved up a bit or used one of the empty disabled spaces.

It's behaviour like this that gives people a dim view of other blue bagde holders.
