here

I see so many stupid FB groups these days created by small minded folk

OP posts:
Alouiseg · 19/03/2010 11:45

Yes it's stupid and small minded.

Yanbu to think it, however it's a free country without censorship and i rather hope that it stays that way.

EccentricaGallumbits · 19/03/2010 11:45

Shocking grammar.

Minshu · 19/03/2010 13:51

I've eaten meat in Arabic countries and not really noticed any difference in taste or texture... Similarly, many curry houses are Pakistani or Bangladeshi, and I wouldn't be able to tell the meat was halal, so not sure what his problem could be if KFC want to increase their market share.

I agree that his grammar is woeful.

darcymum · 19/03/2010 14:03

Are the members all a bit chubby?

I don't have any problem with halal meat being sold in this country but I wouldn't want all meat produced like that or for it to become widespread outside the Muslim community. I believe it has some animal welfare issues. I know some animal rights groups want to ban its production, and not for BNP reasons.

I don't think that was why the group was started though. How did you find it? Were you searching for KFC on Facebook?

Alouiseg · 19/03/2010 14:08

There are lots of animal rights issues surrounding the production of Halal meat.

I would be more than happy to see a ban on it in this country.

But i'd try and make my facebook page slightly better.

ocdgirl · 19/03/2010 14:10

now i know someone will flame me if i'm wrong but as i understand it halal meat doesn't taste any different and is all about the way in which the animal is killed

poshwellies · 19/03/2010 14:11

Nice to see the creator is married and also a fan of plentyoffish.com

OrmRenewed · 19/03/2010 14:11

I was under the impression that Halal meat was in some ways more welfare-friendly simply because it can't be done on such an industrial scale. Is that not the case?

Alouiseg · 19/03/2010 14:13

I think the problem stems from the livestock not being stunned first and allowing blood to drain away from the knife wound while it's still alive.

ben10isgr8 · 19/03/2010 14:24

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halal

There would be no difference in taste, it is all about the types of foods etc allowed and how the animals are killed.

The animals have their throats cut and bleed to death.

In the UK the factory way of killing animals depends on the species.

Cows and sheep are mass herded off the trucks and into pens then pushed into a single holding pen where an abatoir worker uses a "special gun" to stun them. This is done by the force of blow releasing a pin which forces a pellet into the brain. After that the animal is hung by its back legs and its throat is slit.

Pigs i'm not so sure but I think they use electric shock prior to slitting their throats and chickens is water/electricity and decapitation.

either way the end result is the same so I guess it depends on your preferance IYSWIM

chippy47 · 19/03/2010 14:24

Judging by the creator's picture he must pack quite a lot of fast food away. Hopefully there are numerous other outlets he can use to sate his appetite then he probably will not be around too complain for too long.
You cannot taste the difference so no idea what the issue is. Although the halal stuff is probably better than the mass produced chickens injected with hormones/water/fillers that are used in other KFCs.

Alouiseg · 19/03/2010 14:27

Oh i wish i hadn't read ben10sgr8 i'm going out for a steak tonight

passionberry · 19/03/2010 14:36

I highly doubt KFC would start using exclusively halal meat - surely more expensive and slower to produce than normal battery farmed chicken?

Don't actually believe this story.

chicaguapa · 19/03/2010 14:40

I think it's quite funny that the person who started the group is against Halal meat but clearly quite happy to eat battery chickens. Which makes me this he has a racial/ religious problem with it rather than an animal rights one. And shows up his mind-numbing ignrorance.

neillybeag · 19/03/2010 14:41

The word 'moron' is unpleasant and insulting to many people, even when not directed at them.

ben10isgr8 · 19/03/2010 14:42

Oh i wish i hadn't read ben10sgr8 i'm going out for a steak tonight

enjoy your meal

aactionmum · 19/03/2010 14:44

this is torture!!! i'm so very glad i'm a veggie!

ben10isgr8 · 19/03/2010 14:45

same here

Onestonetogo · 19/03/2010 14:53

I wouldn't join that Fb group but if I had to eat a piece of KFC chicken I'd much rather it was non-halal (animals suffer when slaughtered the halal way).
I kind of get the point of whovever started that group tho, which is why should non-muslims have to eat halal KFC? Which is a fair point imo.

so, op, YAB a bit U.

shockers · 19/03/2010 15:02

I wouldn't eat KFC on the grounds that they (usually) use mass-produced battery farmed chicken. I believe it's a franchise so this particular one must be owned by a Muslim. If this chap doesn't like it, he could go to another branch... although, to be honest, he looks like he could do with laying off deep fried anything for a while anyway.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 19/03/2010 15:40

I thought about joining the group to post about how ridiculous I thought they were, but decided it would be somewhat risky, so didn't.

[cowardly custard emoticon]

wannaBe · 19/03/2010 15:46

dh once got food poisoning from kfc. ghastly horrible stuff.

MrsMellowdrummer · 19/03/2010 15:56

Isn't the point of Halal that the meat should be produced as ethically as possible? And the blood draining away thing is an olden days type way of making that happen? I think Halal practice varies around the country, but there's an effort afoot to modernise the way that animal slaughter is handled, and standardise it?

[vague memories of hearing something on radio 4 relatively recently]

The FB thing is vile, btw.

Blu · 19/03/2010 16:00

Far be it for me to defend KFC - revolting company, revolting food - but:

-Yes, KFC have introduced halal only branches, there is a page on it on their website

-The chicken they use IS stunned before being bled, so conforms to UK standards for animal welfare (hollow laughter). In fact this makes it questionable as halal according to one of the Islamic standards organisations.

  • any chicken you eat in an Indian restuarant or takeaway is almost certainly halal. Cheap, mass produced halal chicken is indistinguishable fom cheap mass produced non-halal chicken.

I do not believe that FB group has been set up in the name of animal welfare, but only to stir up resentment against muslim customers. KFC will presumably cater to the greatest demand, as they are a commercial co.
