To be out of my mind with worry about a cat?

IHeartKittensAndWine · 18/03/2010 18:11

Let them out at 6.30 this morning, had the backdoor adjar so they could pop in/out as they wished. Was working in the study, one cat came in and out etc, now dozing. Other one hasn't been seen since, despite calling, leaving food just by door etc. He'd normally be coming in every 20-30 minutes and jump all over my computor. I'm so so so worried, he's only seven months old, only started going out about six weeks ago, always comes when I call. To make matters worse, heard rumour that our next door but one neighbour has a pitbull!

I can't concentrate on work or anything, just so desperately want to see his little face.

Still bloody nothing. Flyered all houses, posters up. Done the biscuit thing, looked in skips, through hedges. (Just about right side of law from breaking and entering ). To make matters worse, I'm ovulating but DH has had to swanny off abroad for a work emergency and my mother chooses to harangue me about tidying and smoking (a SINGLE cigerette, very old, found in coat pocket, couldn't say no too)!

I hate to do this, but if anyone reading this thread is in the N3 area of London, please keep an eye out for a small white and ginger cat who may appear lost or very frightened. Please post on her or PM me if you happen to see him...

iheartkittens.Just remember as others have said, cats can go missing for ages.my mums cat went missing for eleven days .this happened out the blue at the age of 14.We thought she had gone off to die.Turns out she fancied a Beatles rendevous, and had taken herself up to Penny Lane close to where my mum lives.Somebody there had taken her in.Their next door neighbour recognised Jess from the mugshot put around and rang my mum.
Another thing you could try is to put your other cat in cat box when you go lookingthe smell may be picked up by him.Another good source is th local hoodies or kids around, they tend to notice animals hanging around. fingers crossed.good luck

MamaGoblin · 19/03/2010 18:44

Sorry to hear this. Keep nagging people, keep flyering. Some people can be incredibly dim and may not have associated the cute little cat who just came to stay with them, with your own cat. And others won't have checked sheds and garages and spare rooms, even if they say they have. Keep on nagging, and let us know how it's going.

LoveInAColdClimate · 19/03/2010 18:50

Please don't give up hope - we thought we had lost our beloved (now sadly passed on) cat when he went missing for about 2 weeks. He was eventually found in our neighbour's outhouse, very thin and not very happy about his "adventure" at all, but he made a full recovery and lived for another very contented further ten years or so (although he did become less keen on going into sheds and garages!). I do hope you find him - thinking of you.

LoveInAColdClimate · 19/03/2010 18:56

Also - when our very pampered, no-sense-at-all golden retriver (who I do appreciate is not a cat, but thought this might reassure you) escaped from his boarding kennels while we were on holiday (where he never went again), he was missing for the best part of a week but still turned up safe and well. He somehow found his way to the house of one of our friends, despite having never been there before - it was such a relief when we got a call saying they'd got him. Best of luck - thinking of you.

IHeartKittensAndWine · 19/03/2010 19:22

Oh, oh... my dad who is a soppy bugger at best of times stopped by for a cup of tea and started crying. Managed to calm him down and get him back home to mum, but now am all alone in cold, rainy dark finchley, with no DH, no wine, one very confused girl cat and my boy cat still missing... its going to be a very long night .

Sorry for whinging. I just feel so guilty. I keep thinking i can hear him crying at back door, but its a figment of my imagination.

Iheartkittens- My first set of cats were brothers when I was 13. Ebony and Honey. When they were a year and a half old Honey went missing. We were devestated.
6 years later, Ebony got hit by a car and killed. 6 weeks after that- Honey comes strolling up the sodding garden path like he hadn't a care in the world. We knew it was him because of the unusual ear scarring that Ebby had given him.
I hope you don't have to wait 5 years for him to come back.

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 19/03/2010 19:44

differentID that's incredible.
I was just about to tell my story of another cat we had who came back after 3 months but your story is amazing

truthisinthewine · 19/03/2010 19:53

So sorry your cat is missing, my girl cat went missing for 3 days once (this was pre DC) I was beside myself and spent hours walking the streets and even slept on the sofa every night in case she came back at night and we didn't hear her wanting to get back in.

After the 3rd day of walking the area, putting leaflets through doors and crying all over an elderly lady who opened her door just as I was putting my leaflet through my lovely little cat was sat right by the back door waiting for me to come home.

I hope your cat is fine too and he comes home soon.

bluenosebear · 19/03/2010 19:56

Iheartkittensand wine, you have all my sympathy! I had my kitten go missing for a couple of days, turned out he got locked in someones garage! Came home stinking of grease and ate for England. We had horrible thoughts all the time he was gone, as I've no doubt you are but remember there are happy endings!

differentID · 19/03/2010 20:03

We didn't dare believe it, until we got out the photos and compared them to him. We think he was being fed by someone, and becasue he was getting all the fuss and not just half, he stayed tehre. No one came looking for him though
He was a lovely old fella.

ChippingIn · 19/03/2010 20:13

Keep knocking on all of your neighbours doors - ask to go into their sheds/garages/greenhouses with them - sometimes they wont come out for a stranger, but will if they hear your voice. I know it's not a very 'English' thing to do, but hopefully you'll find him

IHeartKittensAndWine · 19/03/2010 20:19

My other thought is the church hall, two (semi busy) roads away... used for mum & baby group thursday mornings, but nothing advertised on Fridays... maybe he strolled in (biscuits or something?)and got shut in... will go down tomorrow/beg anyone whose about to let me in.

Gone up and down the streets again, calling out, rattling biscuits box. Checked under cars, in bushes (paranoid the neighbours think I am a small and fairly random burglar but who cares)... no sign.

I will be watching this thread. I am sending lots of positive "go home" thoughts for your cat whereever he is.

IHeartKittensAndWine · 19/03/2010 20:45

Sorry to keep sounding so slushy, but thank you all for your kind words and thoughts - I feel so sad and stupid and alone with this - what with DH away, sent parents home (they are lovely, but seriously OTT for this sort of thing) friends texted with the "well its only a cat, look at this way only half the kennel costs for holidays if he doesn't" come back It's such a comfort to come on here!

SouthMum · 19/03/2010 21:01

Ah Kittens. Mine has been missing for 4 weeks now after not roaming once in 15 years. I'm so worried a fox or a dog has had him

Its shit when you get people saying "its only a cat". I pretty much grew up with him aswell.

Hope both our kitties are ok wherever they are and they come home soon.

IHeartKittensAndWine · 19/03/2010 21:03

I hope so too SouthMum, I'm raising my glass of wine (naughty, but hey nothing's gonna be happening this month now!) to yours as well as to mine

OP posts:
BusyMissIzzy · 19/03/2010 21:05

at your friends' comments IHeart. Stupid and insensitive thing to say. People without pets just don't get it sometimes. Hope he turns up safe and well (and SouthMum's kitten too).

BusyMissIzzy · 19/03/2010 21:07

Sorry, SouthMum's cat, not kitten.

IHeartKittensAndWine · 19/03/2010 21:14

My friend is.. let's say immature. I'll forgive her. Eventually.

OP posts:
ClaireDeLoon · 19/03/2010 21:24

what a thoughtless thing for your friend to say

how has your girl cat been?

Some tips I have read before that you may like to try:

If they have a litter tray get some used litter and sprinkle it around (outside obv, not your floor, that's the cats job) as the smell may help guide him home

As you walk around pause and listen and see what you can hear.

Ask local children to look/keep an eye out, similarly speak to your postie

I know this is horrible but contact the council - sometimes animals are picked up from side of road for disposal, I know it's a horrible thought and I'm sorry if it upsets you

I will try to think of some more.

TheCatAteMyGymsuit · 19/03/2010 21:27

Positive vibes to you both - here's hoping they are both sheltering from the rain .

darkandstormy · 20/03/2010 13:07

iheartkittens.Any news of your puss? Am so thinking of you.Keeping fingers and toes crossed.

fernie3 · 20/03/2010 13:50

Our cat went missing about 2 months ago (he was only 9 months) he was only gone about 48 hours BUT since he never goes further than our back door and the top of our shed normally it was a shock. I came home from dropping my daughter off at school that morning and he was sitting outside the front door coated in mud, shaking and looking very sorry for himself. I had to wrap him in a towel and snuggle him before gently wiping him down with baby wipes!. He hasnt gone out of our garden since then.
