To be out of my mind with worry about a cat?

Let them out at 6.30 this morning, had the backdoor adjar so they could pop in/out as they wished. Was working in the study, one cat came in and out etc, now dozing. Other one hasn't been seen since, despite calling, leaving food just by door etc. He'd normally be coming in every 20-30 minutes and jump all over my computor. I'm so so so worried, he's only seven months old, only started going out about six weeks ago, always comes when I call. To make matters worse, heard rumour that our next door but one neighbour has a pitbull!

I can't concentrate on work or anything, just so desperately want to see his little face.

hoping he is back home safely.

Have you tried the vets? Expect you have already, but just another thought?

Agingmumoftwins · 19/03/2010 10:36

Was yesterday bin/recycling day in your area? A couple of years ago my cat went missing for a week, I was frantic! I posted leaflets round the whole estate, no joy. A week later he reappeared with very dilated pupils, it took hours for them to go back to normal. We think he'd got shut in someone's shed/garage when they put their rubbish out, and had spent the week in the dark, hence the dilated pupils.

Apart from being hungry and thirsty, he was fine, they're resilient little buggers!

jayjayp · 19/03/2010 10:37

its tomming season you know all the boy cats get dead randy about this time of year my tom went out about a week ago, still not back but am not worried he will come crawling back when he's too tired to catch mice and chase females, waltz in and use me for shelter and sustainance then prob bugger off again for few more days its very common for cats to do this espec. when they sexually active!! wish i was a cat!!!

ClaireDeLoon · 19/03/2010 10:39

jayjay - would it be better to get him neutered perhaps? Would stop the straying, also they're less likely to get into fights and get infections etc.

IHeartKittensAndWine · 19/03/2010 10:56

He's neutered, so doesn't get randy really.
Yes yesterday was bin/rubbish collection - that's part of what's worring me [imagines cat trapped on back of rubbish truck/stuck in someones garage]. Papered the neighbours we couldn't speak too, all vets called, RSPCA called, local council called. His sister seems very agitated, and when she meows in the garden I think I can hear an echo (or I could just be imagining things). I just hope he isn't hurt, wherever he is...

yes i have considered this, i have my female spayed and 1 of the boys but the neutered boy really lost his spirit when i got him done and is not so happy any more hes put on weight and just seems to have lost his lust for life, i felt that i couldnt do that to my other tom plus he is sometimes used as stud tho to be true not so much anymore now he getting older, he is to be true much healthier and happier than the neutered one, but in general i do agree with spaying/neutering in most cases i think it is the best thing to do.

jayjayp · 19/03/2010 11:01

maybe try follow his sister see if she knows where he is?

Tiredmumno1 · 19/03/2010 11:02

He's probably jumping over my car, scratching it up or shiting in my garden. What should i do about that sort out of situation? I am sick of a cat that lives up the road to us doing this.

ClaireDeLoon · 19/03/2010 11:04

tiredmumm why don't you start your own thread about your problems rather than coming on a thread that is nothing to do with the problems you're having? You may get advice that way?

CockShore · 19/03/2010 11:11

Tiredmum - not a very helpful post

LuckyC · 19/03/2010 11:14

YANBU. I worried when I first let our cat out.

It's spring - cat has probably found an extra-interesting scent trail/ butterfly to chase - will be back. It's good that he's learning to be more outdoor-savvy and independent.

Let us know what happens!

jayjayp · 19/03/2010 11:22

it is possible that someone else could be feeing him, some cats choose to have more than one home, they can be sooooo selfish sometimes, dont know what they put us through!

Tiredmumno1 · 19/03/2010 11:29

Fine

MyMamaToldMe · 19/03/2010 11:48

Poor you - hope he comes home soon. The worry is just awful.

I know exactly how you feel - a few years ago we went to Oz for a holiday and had my BIL house sit for us and look after the cats. About a week into the holiday he rang us to say he couldn't find the one cat - he'd been missing for a day already. I know it sounds a bit pathetic, but it almost ruined my holiday! I phoned everyone I could to look for my cat, spent many hours crying my eyes out and then finally three days later he came home very hungry and thirsty (apparently) and after that didn't want to go out again for days. In fact, even after we got home a few weeks later he still didn't really want to go out, so I reckon he might have been trapped in a garage/shed or something and it frightened him!

Hope you give us good news soon!

aristocat · 19/03/2010 14:02

any news this afternoon?

hope he comes back soon

Summerfruit · 19/03/2010 15:30

I really hope your cat is ok !

IHeartKittensAndWine · 19/03/2010 15:35

No news I'm afraid . Mum came over and we combed the streets...no sign. Tried following his sister (I don't jump over bushes as deftly as she) but no luck. I can't stop myself jumping to the back door every two minutes.... I miss him so much, his little white paws and pink nose. I hope he's ok.

Wishing you the best with your cat.

Just to reassure you, one of my boy cats routinely does this (usually in Spring/Summer) and has been known to disappear for up to a week. He has been neutered too, sometimes they just get a wanderlust .
Do keep checking sheds, garages, and ask neighbours etc.

Good luck!

LetThereBeRock · 19/03/2010 15:42

So sorry to hear he hasn't returned yet. I know how awful it is.

If he doesn't return soon I'd put posters up.

Are any of your neighbours having any work done to their homes at the moment?

darkandstormy · 19/03/2010 16:36

saying a little prayer for his safe return. He will be somewhere, take a walk shaking cat biscuit box my boy usedto come back with that trick. Also tonight dot tuna or strong smelling food out in the back garden, he may pick up the scent. My boy used to be int greenhouses sunning himself there, are there any places around such as lock ups.Call his name in a high pitched tone when looking.Being young he will be quite an inexperienced climber he may have got somewhere high and got stuck. Also check skips etc locally may have gone for a nose.Put posters around large areas and local popular places such as supermarkets.Hope he comes back this is a horrible situation to be in as they are one of the family at the end of the day.
