to not want to go on a caravan park holiday DH won through work?

I've checked out their website and I just don't think I can do it. Basically, the caravan home is owned by another employee through a sort of time-share scheme (?) so it is not possible to upgrade to one of the nicer homes in the park. I know that it is only a week and I am effectively passing on an almost free holiday but I absolutely hate that kind of set-up having discovered the world as an independent traveller over the years.

If we don't go, the 'owner' would probably know as his friend 'owns' the plot next door and will be there when we are meant to go. He keeps telling dh about the karaoke nights, "the best cabaret shows in the UK" and the huge breakfast buffet - these are things I would actively avoid in a holiday of my choice. Dh has already confirmed that he does not have any annual leave booked for those dates.

Is there a polite way of getting out of it?

We go on caravan holidays as its all we can afford. The kids enjoy it, thats all that matters in my eyes.

As parents of SN kids we take what we can.

Besom · 12/03/2010 10:43

Oh yes, screamingeagle - I had missed the last sports direct post.

MiladyDeWinter · 12/03/2010 10:45

I don't know why MillyR, because clearly working class people do take their children rock-pooling. I do.

Perhaps it's because I don't call it that, and have only seen the word written in Enid Blyton books or something.

I grinned at the sports clothing comment because it was over-egging the pudding.

Anyway, I have been on a one of these holidays, to Clacton. Hated the park but the DC adored it, which was the point. And the only one we've had in six years so it's not as if I'm being snobby.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 12/03/2010 10:47

This thread reminded me of when I was younger and was really jealous of my friends that would go on Butlins/Pontins holidays. I thought they sounded like so much fun. What 9/10 year old doesnt like swimming pools/arcades/and discos?

We always used to "tour" places on our holidays. Staying in the parks for one night only, I liked being able to see and do lots of different things but it was annoying making friends and then having to say bye and do it all over again the next day!

Only 8 weeks till I go on my static caravan holiday in Devon! Cannot wait!

I do hope the car will be ok...

TrillianAstra · 12/03/2010 10:51

V good OP, convincing at first, descending slowly into farce. A sterling example of pisstake trolling.

"This thread reminded me of when I was younger and was really jealous of my friends that would go on Butlins/Pontins holidays"

Same here! Ditto 'bought' cakes and fizzy drinks that didn't come from a Sodastream.

DuelingFanjo · 12/03/2010 10:58

I got to the bit about the guy working in the post room and had to stop!

Snob much! blimey!

BariatricObama · 12/03/2010 11:00

snort @ sports direct.

GetOrfMoiLand · 12/03/2010 11:03

My gran used to take me on great big wanderings through Africa and the caribbean as holidays when I was a kid.

I used to ache to go to Butlins Minehead or Blackpool instead.

MiladyDeWinter · 12/03/2010 11:04

I saw a nice top in the window of sports direct, it was a lovely colour but DH wouldn't let me buy it because it was an England shirt and I'm such a Jonah the whole team would probably break their legs if I did.

ShadeofViolet · 12/03/2010 11:08

I am off to Haven in June, and Butlins in August. I cant wait :D

We cant afford to go abroad and we always have a great time. Its not about where you stay, but what you are do and who you are with.

I am snobby and caravans/camping are beneath me - yuck that smell that you get in caravans. Anything less than 3 stars is camping and I don't do camping. Was dragged on caravan holidays for years as a kid, I hated them then and I hate them now.

I don't backpack either, holidays are for fun if you are not going to enjoy it then don't go. There must be someone at DH's work who would enjoy it.

Just say you can't do it and pass it back/on.

Morloth · 12/03/2010 12:07

Orm Sodastreams are cool. Can you still buy them?

can you go & spend all your time hiding in the caravan, living off rations? think of it as a trial run for the zombie plan

Morloth · 12/03/2010 12:20

Isn't it funny, when I was a kid having a Sodastream was posh. If we wanted soft drinks Mum would mix up cordial (own brand from Franklins of course) and fizzy water.

OrmRenewed · 12/03/2010 12:24

It was always so disappointing! They never tasted like the real stuff Dad bought us some lime concentrate once - that was as exciting as it got.

ifancyashandy · 12/03/2010 13:31

Regarding 'Some people can't afford to go abroad' - it's usually cheaper than going on holiday in this country! And it's not about going on holiday in this country - more about not wanting to go to a holiday camp. My parents have a caravan and we camped as kids. I love the caravan - but not on a holiday park. Much prefer going to a quieter, less 'entertainment orientated' park. And yes, we do go near the beach (in this country!) so the kids can run about like loons (Boden clothing not required.)

And yes, some people do prefer going to Blackpool. Just as some people don't - neither is better (that was, like, kinda the point...).

And I like going on holiday in this country too. Just come back from a gorgeous week in Cumbria. But also like hitting the heat/beach. Not suggesting you don't either....

And I did not make any 'nasty and unpleasant remarks about Working Class people'. If you weren't refering to me, perhaps you should have put this last point in a seperate post.

JemL · 12/03/2010 13:50

I don't understand what the joke is meant to be

plantsitter · 12/03/2010 13:55

OP have you ever read the 'Modern Parents' in 'Viz'?

MaisietheMorningsideCat · 12/03/2010 14:46

Ifancy - going abroad is certainly not usually cheaper for everyone in the UK! 2 weeks at a lovely little caravan park on the Somerset coast last year cost us £500 for a family of 5. If you can find a nice holiday abroad for us for that price then please let me know!

OrmRenewed · 12/03/2010 14:55

Not to mention the cost of passports maisie. Mine and DH's have lapsed. DS#1 was on mine and now has to have his own. DD hasn't used hers since she was a baby so it needs updating and DS2 never had one. So that's a big expense to start with. DS#1 has a new one now as he went to Germany so that's one down, four more to go!

ifancyashandy · 12/03/2010 16:37

Sorry - I don't include the cost of passports - see them as a necessity because it allows us to do the below...(prepares self for flaming...)

We went to Greece last year (family of three) for £375 on a well known 'need to go now' website. And yes, it was during the holidays. Self catering appartment.

EzzieBoo · 12/03/2010 17:04
