to not want to go on a caravan park holiday DH won through work?

I've checked out their website and I just don't think I can do it. Basically, the caravan home is owned by another employee through a sort of time-share scheme (?) so it is not possible to upgrade to one of the nicer homes in the park. I know that it is only a week and I am effectively passing on an almost free holiday but I absolutely hate that kind of set-up having discovered the world as an independent traveller over the years.

If we don't go, the 'owner' would probably know as his friend 'owns' the plot next door and will be there when we are meant to go. He keeps telling dh about the karaoke nights, "the best cabaret shows in the UK" and the huge breakfast buffet - these are things I would actively avoid in a holiday of my choice. Dh has already confirmed that he does not have any annual leave booked for those dates.

Is there a polite way of getting out of it?

I think YABVU to be honest. We used to own a caravan on a site (admittedly in France) and it was lovely; you don't have to go to the cabaret etc, you don't have to go to the buffet. Its a change of scene, a change of pace, and to be frank I think you should count yourself very lucky for even having the opportunity to holiday at all in the current climate.

However - on a more sympathetic note - maybe you should just go and try it, even if its not your usual "thing".

amber1979 · 11/03/2010 22:20

Definitely a wind up.

electrofagz · 11/03/2010 22:20

Not Butlins. Not a piss-take (if only). Mostly about not wanting to break someone's heart I suppose.

You are definitely taking the piss. Much better than my cocktail sausages thread. I salute you

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 11/03/2010 22:21

I fear the dcs may learn nothing and may only achieve enjoyment during the week.

You cannot ahve a holiday like that.

That would be wrong.

LyraSilvertongue · 11/03/2010 22:21

I doubt the post man would be broken hearted if you didn't go.

MrsC2010 · 11/03/2010 22:21

It's got to be. I hope so anyway. The thought of the sweet man in the mail room being hurt that someone was looking down him and his holiday home actually made me well up, in my stupid pregnancy hormonal state.

Melody4 · 11/03/2010 22:22

I'm sure that you are taking the mickey .... but if you are not, I will go for you!

SpringHeeledJack · 11/03/2010 22:22

Broken hearted my arse. if you are for real (please God) I bet the man in the post room and all his mates are laughing their heads off at the thought of you lot at Haven

thumbwitch · 11/03/2010 22:22

possibly a pisstake but still - I have been on one of these holidays with my sister and her DH and my then BF - it was hellish. Because it is not at all to my taste. Thankfully we only went for a long weekend, not a week - I don't think I could have stayed a week. The caravan we were in was far enough away from the "entertainment" centre that you weren't disturbed by the noise though.

I don't know much about the Cleethorpes area but if you do go, make sure you take the car and just use the place as a base to go on discovery journeys around - Lincoln has a lovely Cathedral and town centre, for example.

I see your dilemma - I wouldn't want to hurt the man's feelings either.

Amapoleon · 11/03/2010 22:23

Hahaha, is there something you are not telling us about your dh and the post boy? Why would his heart be broken?

LyraSilvertongue · 11/03/2010 22:24

C'mon OP. If it is a wind up, now the time to come clean.

ifancyashandy · 11/03/2010 22:25

Oh FFS - some people like going walking up mountains, some like lying on the beach in the Bahamas. Some like noisy, fun resorts - whatever floats your boat!

If Electro doesn't like the sound of it, so what?! Why does that get up everyones nose?

frazzled74 · 11/03/2010 22:25

i dont really like thesehols so sympathise but have done them as a cheap way of visiting relatives and the dcs love them, so why not just go for it, use it as a base. Its still a break and free.

electrofagz · 11/03/2010 22:25

I think I will go for one night. If the dcs are enjoying themselves, we'll stay on. Otherwise, we'll head back home the next morning. I'll take ear plugs and a good book.

I'll treat it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Pretty surreal though as I will be the first person in my family and friendship circle to have experienced such a holiday and I may need a proper holiday to recover from it all!!

SpringHeeledJack · 11/03/2010 22:26

oh please post the photos on here when you get back, OP

pleeeeeeeeease

MillyR · 11/03/2010 22:26

This thread has made me want to go to a resort. I can't go anywhere fun because of the dogs.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 11/03/2010 22:29

The first person in your family to "experience" a holiday park?

You're not for real are you.

Flippin eck. that's quite a narrow existence you've all led.

Titter.

Go on, see how the other half lives...

MillyR · 11/03/2010 22:32

There must be something worth doing within a 30 min drive of Cleethorpes. There is no reason to stay within the camp.

LadyBiscuit · 11/03/2010 22:32

Oh come on ifancyashandy - I like kitsch art but what will the children learn on a holiday like this? They are used to eating fresh meals not ones reheated under heat lamps?

I have never been on a caravan park holiday - wouldn't be my first choice but if I had won one I would go for the LOLs. Now that is a proper sense of adventure - not going to Peru and Thailand to that that darling little place that Candida and Marcus went to the other year.

usualsuspect · 11/03/2010 22:33

Pack your union jack shorts and have a blast ...

LyraSilvertongue · 11/03/2010 22:33

There's a Haven ad right alongside this thread

MaisietheMorningsideCat · 11/03/2010 22:35

I'll have it if you don't want it.
