to hate it that my DS age 5 uses the word "like" in a Scooby Doo/Shaggy kind of way?

I fucking hate it! I've told him it's not good grammar (Like, like he cares!) and have asked him to try not to use it unless he is using it to say he LIKES something. Should I just, like, let him, like, slang away?

i'd leave it like
honestly though the more you get at him about it the more he will do it.

kneedeepinthedirtylaundry · 08/03/2010 12:12

He is only 5, wait until he is a teen, then its really cool to sound stupid.

'bad' means 'good'

'sick' means 'good'

'innit' means 'i agree or do you agree'

'own' means 'you won'

'wrecked' means 'you won'

I could go on, but my brain hurts!

kneedeepinthedirtylaundry · 08/03/2010 12:19

Jeez! I'll need a guide when he's a teenager. It'll be like visiting another country. Well done for remembering all of those claw!

Oh and they say 'yeah' and 'right' a lot too.

Like i was walking down the road yeah, and this boy like come up to me right.

Dont worry too much, their grammar improves at 16, they stop talking and only speak to ask for money or a lift.

YANBU.

But, take cheer from Zara Phillips's acceptance speech for the Sports Personality of the Year Award. She said 'like' and 'amazing' and a few other words in between. If ZP can't speak her own Grandmother's English, I think it's time to relax, accept textspeak and regard received pronunciation as a dead language, albeit one still worth preserving and studying if only for the literature.

kneedeepinthedirtylaundry · 08/03/2010 12:25

We should at least have a funeral for Received Pronunciation...

I find it really funny, sometimes my DS will try to 'act' cool, partic around older boys, relatives, i think its quite, like, cuuute!
