to be very annoyed by the CBeebies website 'print' option?

DD1, who is 4yo and hardly a fluent reader, loves to play on the CBeebies website. But at the end of practically every game that have two big buttons, one 'back' and one 'print page'. DD1 randomly chooses one. She often chooses 'print'. And then when the print options screen comes up, just hits 'return' to get rid of it. Which, of course, sends the page to print. In colour and high resolution. The printer is off so no-one notices.

And then I turn the printer on later, and out spew reams of paper, whole pages of orange, blue, green etc, using up my whole blardy ink cartridge.

Why do they do this!? Why? Why do they think we need a printer page of how many stars she won in Mr Tumble's maze game? Or a certificate that she's now a proper Special Delivery Person a la Postman Pat.

GRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!

It is annoying but maybe worth checking the print queue before you turn the printer on?

At least you have the option, if our printer is off when you send something to print, the software is able to turn the printer on so the print comes out immediately. DS thinks its great!!

Well YANBU to be angry, but you can avoid this fairly easily yourself.

On many machines, you can set the Microsoft 'print to file' facility as the default printer. I have something called 'doPDF' as my default (I have not printed anything in 10 years on this PC) - doPDF takes the page(s) and creates an Acrobat PDF document (so I can keep a printable copy of web pages / invoices / etc, just don't ever print them).

Until you change the default for the printer, you could (quite easily) check the print queue and delete any unexpected documents.

Back to the main topic:

Does the CBeebies website ever give you one of those 'please rate this website' questionnaires? If not, send them an e-mail complaining about the illogicality of displaying a "PRINT" option, at least to see if anyone there can take on board the fact that there's little or no need for this to be 'standard' on all pages, and certainly could be removed in the examples you cite.

This is an ideal opportunity for you to teach her to read the word "print"

never had that issue. Change the defaults on your print from browser options.

GoddessInTheKitchen · 07/03/2010 21:17

'back' usually has an arrow, dd knows to look for the arrow, could you teach her this?

i can see how annoyed you were though, but you can stop printing as soon as it starts so you don't have to waste all your ink
