In Thinking The MN 10th Bash Could Have Been More Charitable?

apologies if I've missed something, but....

it's the boring old MNers themselves who have highlighted all the almost-taboo aspects of parenting

2nd trimester miscarriages
special needs
breast feeding and all its proiblems
the Nestle issue

etc etc etc

So why the flash sleb-fawning party? I kind of feel MNHQ forgot the real reason why MN is so successfull. Were the guests hand-picked so that they wouldn't embarrass Carrie and Justine by bringing up the issues we MNers care about with the PM and his wife?

Wouldn't it have been more appropriate to have the guest bring along a bag of their favourite biscuits and donate the money they would have spent on catering to a charity chosen by us?

Mumsnet is about opinions and I gave mine nice party and the only reason I chose to look at the pics is Beacuse mnet themselves called it "inexoliable fawning" and there WAS IMHO from Gordo's side or vice versa. I would have like to have seen Vince Cable there too or Cameron or Clegg then I would not have been moved to comment. Someone else pointed out that it looked a wee bit like a Labour Conference lobby meeting. I did not know about the Boden gifts and apologise for that but I do not apologise for stating that GB's sickly rictus grin would have put me orf my canapes. ROFL at the suggestion that I was Gina F with a bad case of

David and Sam Cameron were invited but couldn't attend as they were already going to two other functions.

Nick Clegg was invited, accepted and then pulled out at the last minute.

what was the mumsonline thing?

heQet · 08/03/2010 18:56

MN is a business. Everything they do is done with that in mind.

As it should be.

scottishmummy · 08/03/2010 19:29

of course it is a business,a canny idea.well executed caught the moment. and interest in it is stellar

well worth celebrating

OrientCalf · 08/03/2010 19:49

many people mistakenly believe that online = free. It costs a bloody fortune keeping a site this big running smoothly and free to users - raising the profile is important for supporting the running of the site and it's up to MNHQ to decide how they do that. they take on board a lot of suggestions generally from MNers

Ten years is great and they can celebrate however they like. they can sacrifice goats on Hampstead Heath if they want - users can vote with their feet if they don't like it.

Bumperlicious · 08/03/2010 21:09

YABU OP, how do you think MN manage to fund such a big site? And those massive servers that work brilliantly (99.9% of the time) don't come out of cereal boxes you know.

Of course MN are going to have a flashy sleb party (though it wasn't really that flash, lovely, but pretty low key) and try and attract big names to the site in order to attract big advertisers. MN has to pay it's way and Justine and Carrie can't live on dust.

What's really your problem? Did you want to go to the party? Did you enter the comp? And why should Justine et al donate their money to charity in your name? Donate your own bloody money if you're so bothered, they can have a party if they like, or is no-one allowed to celebrate anything any more
