to think that smoking in a children's playground is just not on!

First sunny day, packed park, mum (with dad and toddler) puffing away without a care!
Now she wasn't stood away from the children, she was stood watching her child right next to the toddler's frame and slide, it was full of children going up and down (including my 2yr old DD2)!
I was stood a bit further away and was getting a good old whiff of smoke, so am sure the toddlers were too!

Now I know its open air, and blah blah blah, but come on, could she not wait till they left the park, or go and stand away from the children!

So AIBU????

I dont think you are.....she should have stood away.
Our local playground has signs up so you cant smoke inside the railings around the play area.

rainbowinthesky · 06/03/2010 18:29

Horrible. Yanbu.

Lulumaam · 06/03/2010 18:30

i think YAB a bit unreasonable, she was out in the park, in a public place, not a building, and wanted a ciggy. maybe she did not want to move aaway

i imagine if she had walked away from her child and wsa not keeping a close eye, whilst she had a ciggy, she would have got judged for leaving her child alone to do so

yellowcircle · 06/03/2010 18:30

YANBU. I have found that there is such a lot of unacceptable stuff in parks that we bought a climbing frame last summer.

I mean broken glass, dog poo, litter, dogs being taken into children's play areas (where they are not allowed), a needle if you are really unlucky! I don't go to parks anymore

MiffyWhinge · 06/03/2010 18:30

yanbu

not a very relaxing place to smoke, with all those annoying shouty squealy children everywhere

would not enjoy cigarette in those circumstances

thecloudhopper · 06/03/2010 18:41

I am rather anti smoking personally but I think there is no reason to smoke near them so in my opinion YANBU.

MiraMoreVino · 06/03/2010 18:43

YANBU

It just shows what am addiction it is, though, that you have to be puffing away while your 3 yr old is going down the slide!

macdoodle · 06/03/2010 18:44

She didn't need to stand right there, there was a dad with them as well (who was not smoking), and it's a smallish toddler frame, it doesnt really need very close supervision for the older toddlers!

I was sat on a bench a little bit away, wouldn't have much liked her sat next to me, but would have preferred it than her puffing all over the children.

As a non smoker, I really can't understand why she couldn't just wait til they left, they were only there half an hour or so!

Lol at miffy

LadyBiscuit · 06/03/2010 21:12

I smoke and I never smoke in the playground. Apart from anything else you know that 90% of parents are going to hate you. And I don't like smoking around my DC anyway

totallydifferenttypeofperson · 06/03/2010 21:26

yabu & very judgy. it was open air, after all.

macdoodle · 06/03/2010 21:29

Really ok, because I wansn't entirely sure, but I dont like people smoking around my DC, what if there has been an asthmatic/allergic child close by!
She was very close to a fairly large group of DC who werent hers!

OP posts:
GoddessInTheKitchen · 06/03/2010 21:29

i'm the same as ladybiscuit, but if i was there all day i would usually go just outside the fence or to a remote corner depending on the park

macdoodle · 06/03/2010 21:30

I can accept you may think IABU fine!
But how on earth is that judgy??? Can you explain, am not judging anything , she was smoking, have made no comment on why or how, or the type of person or parent she was, just that IMO smoking in a playground is not on, how is that judgy??

onebadbaby · 06/03/2010 21:34

yaNbu- it is just rude!

QuestionsAnswered · 06/03/2010 21:37

Yanbu

Not agreeing with her choice to smoke in close proximity to a group of young children is not being judgemental. It's a difference of opinion.

macdoodle · 06/03/2010 21:39

Exactly QA, no judging here
And of course my opinion is right

Went to park today dd fell asleep on way so I stayed in car with her and dh took ds! Dh would almost Certainly have been smoking!
He even smokes in lifts even if I say something! I am ex smoker 5 yrs but even then if catching bus for instance I wouldn't have a cig sitting next to someone at bus stop!

Difficult one

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 06/03/2010 21:39

I don't think that YABU. The kids were there to play. On the play equipment. She could have smoked elsewhere in the park. Away from the kids on the play equipment and her DH/P could have stayed close and minded their dc. Simple.

I would have had to say something (and would probably have got a mouthful of abuse - not for the first time!).

JustGetOnWithIt · 06/03/2010 21:41

What on earth is the harm you imagine from a cigarette smoked in the open air? The volume of 'pollutant' contained in the wisps of smoke from even the most enormous roll-up is infinitessimally smaller than the volume of air blowing around the play equipment.

You silly moo. It's people like that spoil parenthood for the rest of us, smokers or not.

houseworkhater · 06/03/2010 21:43

I don't like smoke full stop.

When ds played football one of the other mums was pregnant and smoked at every training session and match. The sessions were over within an hour and I couldn't help but think if you are like this in public how many do you smoke in private.
Not nice.

Spoof · 06/03/2010 21:43

I don't mind people smoking near me as long as they don't mind me squatting and pissing near them.

Well said spoof !

If your post is aimed at me JustGetOnWithIt then I agree with you that the harm in terms of pollutants is miniscule, but it is a horrid and anti social. How do people like me spoil parenthood for the rest of you?
