I was in my supermarket today, the local newspaper was on display. Front page news being somebody had tied a female staffy up,doused her in petrol and set her alight. This all happened in a local park.Despite the efforts of local passers by the dog had to be put to sleep.I was literally moved to tears over this story, and have felt sick to the pit of my stomach thinking of the suffering this poor creatured endured. As I write this I am looking into the eyes of my beautiful dog, and thinking what sort of person can be so wicked to another living being.Words cannot describe my views on these utter scumballs I only hope that "what goes around comes around", and they themselves are subjuct to a similar ordeal. I cannot stop thinking about this poor dog and have been nearly in tears all morning. What vile characters there are within our society.

While I agree that there are vile characters in our society and the perpetrator of this action is certainly one of them, I really can't agree with your hope that they themselves are subjected to a similar ordeal.

You are overwrought. I am sure you don't really think that.

darcymum · 05/03/2010 16:06

What happened to the people who did it? Do you know?

SouthMum · 05/03/2010 16:39

Thats too awful for words

I for one wouldn't shed a tear if the same happened to them.

Notalone · 05/03/2010 16:42

God same here. I am a volunteer dog walker for my local dog rescue and have seen some awful things but this story made me feel quite tearful too. This was someones missing pet too apparently. How could someone do something like that - the poor poor dog. I hope they get caught and get the maximum punishment possible.

darkandstormy · 05/03/2010 16:46

I have since brought myself to read the full story.Apparently, the dog was a one year old female staffy cross, police traced the owners via her microchip, she had been missing for a few days.I really have spent the whole day feeling so sick with disgust.I can't say how upset it has made me.

thesouthsbelle · 05/03/2010 16:50

god that is awful, mum told me about a GSD who was so ill & the owners couldn't afford to have him put down, or medicated so they hung him up to the washing line apparently and the poor lamb scrambled. there was 2 other dogs as well who wouldn't go out in the garden after teh rspca were called. poor poor creatures.

junglist1 · 05/03/2010 19:36

Round my way a dog was beaten to death recently. One woman said she heard a dog screaming but didn't even bother to go and investigate. She's as low as the killer IMO. I'd love to catch that person in a dark alley and I'm not joking either.
Unfortunately some people on here don't give a crap about animals, there's always threads slagging off people who give to animal charities (shit stirring cos am in a mood)

BrahmsThirdRacket · 05/03/2010 19:38

people are cunts

junglist1 · 05/03/2010 19:38

And I too hope someone sets them on fire though it won't happen they'll just get away with it or get community service at best

EggyAllenPoe · 05/03/2010 19:43

sick-making. people are scum.

bernadetteoflourdes · 06/03/2010 09:26

I don't like staffies but this is beyond cruelty vile. Yet you would shed the same tears too wouldn't you if you read that a human being had been the victim of the same treatment (because it does happen.sadists/ vile gangland retribution punishments etc etc. ) Tell me you would surely?

Lulumaam · 06/03/2010 09:31

YANBu t be devastated

but what i find unfathomable , is the hope that the people who did this are subject to the same violence and nastiness, and that people would inflict it themselves

i am a dog owner too, so i understand about loving your pets/animals in general, but i couldn't wish that sort of thing on a human , however despicable their actions..that < IMO, negates the horror you feel at the dog being hurt if you would delight in a human having the same happen

Janos · 06/03/2010 09:34

YANBU to be upset by this darkandstormy. It's a horrible story. That poor dog

Now I can't speak for OP bernadette but I'm sure most people would find that equally, if not more, distressing. Caring about animals and people is not mutually exclusive after all.

bernadetteoflourdes · 06/03/2010 09:49

Er no not to my Nan it wouldn't she thinks animals trump humans any day in her book, her argument "they must have done something to deserve it".

bernadetteoflourdes · 06/03/2010 09:51

@lulumaam good point.

Janos · 06/03/2010 09:52

I don't understand or like that sort of attitude either bernadette.

Reading back my comment looks a bit patronising which it wasn't meant to be. 'Tone' doesn't come very very well when you're typing!

bernadetteoflourdes · 06/03/2010 09:55

Not at all Janos yours was a good point too

LEMisdiscombobulated · 06/03/2010 09:56

I think that there is something in our psyche that makes us feel almost maternal towards animals - thats the relationship we have, to nurture and love them. So it is understandable to have a visceral reaction to something so horrific.

If, God forbid, this had happened to a child, would you still be about wanting the same thing to happen to the purportrators [sic]? Some might, but less i think.

The sad thing is, if caught the scum who did this probably wont even go to prison I don't understand why we value animals so little.

The emmense joy that pets bring, loyaly, comfort - guide dogs, pat dogs, police dogs, hearing dogs - all services rendered for a warm house and a loving stroke in return. But they don't deserve the same justice or respect as humans? I don't get it.

LEMisdiscombobulated · 06/03/2010 10:01

I hope that you DO love animals bernadette, she is after all, the patron saint of animals (in some way similar to saint frances) and you are my patron saint and i used to be a vet nurse so there.

Thing is, as a vet nurse you get hardened to it, having to put animals to sleep, horrific injuries - almost becomes water off a dogs back, but sit me in front of Animal Hospital and im blubbering before they leave the waiting room. As i said, its our relationship with animals that makes us protective which is why, the OP was so devestated about the dog, whereas she would have looked at yet another suicide bombing in the middle east and not given it a second thought - also, i think we become desensitized to that sort of thing, also, you don't see the individual story either.

junglist1 · 06/03/2010 10:03

Well that's my attitude. Every time animal lovers come on here human suffering is brought into it. None of us have said we'd feel less sympathy for an innocent human. If the human was a child murderer I'd feel much less sympathy than for the dog. I feel sorry for innocents, human or animal.

junglist1 · 06/03/2010 10:05

What do you suggest we do with the perpetrators then? THEY SET A DOG ON FIRE

SpawnChorus · 06/03/2010 10:08

That's a horrific story. However, this sort of abhorrent cruelty is (thankfully) rare compared to the millions of animals who live their whole lives in utter misery and degradation in factory farming. Why don't battery farmed animals deserve similar compassion?

LEMisdiscombobulated · 06/03/2010 10:10

Very good point spawnchorus - imo, they do - i should prefer to burn to death than to suffer the slow deaths that is those animal's lives. We are veggie for that very reason - we can't afford free range meat and half of the affordable meats sold in the supermarkets aren't even from british farms where there is at least some consession to animal welfare, the EU farms - ugghhh, it doesn't bear thinking about

onebadbaby · 06/03/2010 10:12

Anyone who can do this to another living creature is seriously damaged. They need treatment because anyone who could treat an animal like that might choose a child as their next victim.
