To wonder why there are always more disabled spaces than mother&baby spaces in car parks?

In places like Waitrose, John Lewis, etc. Surely there are more mothers with little children out there than disabled people?

Riven I am really pissed off love my mahoosive car...

Goblinchild · 05/03/2010 18:29

What, has Wall-e been forgotten so soon? I want my glider chair with built in waste disposal and junk food link.
It's the future!

3littlefrogs · 05/03/2010 18:30

We had a normal sized car (VW golf - before they became popular with boy racers) with child seats in the back. Perfectly adequate.

misdee....

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

Gosh I didn't get a chance to access Mumsnet all afternoon and now see what's happened!

I'm sure someone has pointed this out (I have only managed to read the first page really) but I know a few people who have a disabled badge and don't really need it - they are far more capable of walking than a new mum carrying to small people. My FIL, for one. He got his badge when he had hip problems, now he's fine but he still has the badge.

So there.

Everyone knows 'a few people'...it's a little like 'I read an article that...'.

mumtobp I am not in the least upset, it is an observation that the disabled spaces are underused and more numerous than necessary. Really- do you honestly think that everyone should drive past all the empty spaces in busy city centres thinking, "oh well, I don't mind driving round for another 1/2 hour because there might be 10 disabled drivers along any minute that need it more than me"?

gasman · 05/03/2010 18:38

I must remember the next time I take my disabled mother out in her wheelchair not to park my big, fancy expensive car in the disabled bay as it obviously can't be being used by anyone who is disabled. FFS. New mental note the family of friends of disabled people must not own premium brand cars as they are unbecoming to their disabled relatives. I really have heard it all now.

I can think of several occassions when I have been unable to complete a planned outing with my Mother because we were unable to get parked close enough. I would like to think that all the disabled spaces were being occupied by folk with genuine disabilities.

I too have been yelled at for going back to get stuff out of a car with a disabled badge up as I am not disabled. I'm not but that doesn't mean that the disabled person isn't in the vicinity (my Mum was in the cafe having a coffee/ rest).

foxinsocks · 05/03/2010 18:38

yes

foxinsocks · 05/03/2010 18:40

I can't say I've ever looked at a disabled space and thought that I would like it

As riven and 2shoes have said several time, you want the space, you can have the disability.

posieparkerfuckityfuck · 05/03/2010 18:42

OBB....see if you can get a serious injury that changes your life forever and hey presto you've got yourself a badge....

Or you could just think driving around for another half an hour ain't so bad or get a bus!

If there is just one occasion where a person with a disability has taken all the effort, maybe making sure they have taken someone else to support and assist them, to get to the shops that finds disabled bays all occupied it would be terrible....I would rather drive past 100 spaces than think people cannot park.

Feierabend · 05/03/2010 18:44

And did I say anywhere that disabled spaces should be abolished? Did I? No. I have just noticed that they are usually empty while mums have to drag children, bags and buggies across busy car parks. It would be good marketing for shops to provide more help for shopping mums, since we are the ones who spend most of the family money. As for legal requirements - there is nothing wrong with questioning how sensible certain laws are or is there?

Oh well.

fraud is a big problem in our area, and the police regularly have a blitz.

I really think that lots of people do know "a few people" who use badges fraudulently. I do, well 3 anyway. And that's everyone I know who has a blue badge.

It is such a shame that people do take the piss, as it results in a loss of sympathy for the vast majority of people who are genuine.

mumtobp · 05/03/2010 18:44

yes I really do think that people who are not disabled should not park in disabled spaces ffs the clue is in the name!
I dont park in disabled bays, eventhough I have a disabled child.
what is wrong with people, they think that everything should be handed to them on a place, get over yourself, life is hard. but your actions make it harder for certain people.

LittleMrsHappy · 05/03/2010 18:45

NOTHING BUT ROLLY EYES FOR OP!

Feierabend · 05/03/2010 18:45

And people please don't get so upset! I didn't mean to spoil anyone's afternoon.

thecloudhopper · 05/03/2010 18:48

maybe the "few people" have unseen disabilities that you know nothing about and don't want to tell you about them as it's none of your fecking business! It fecks me off when people are so judgmental!

I'm not disabled, and hopefully never will be, but i have had major surgery after which I found it difficult to walk and my stomach was swollen and tender. I was once judged for taking up too much space on a bus - being a big lady anyway it's a bit of a squeeze to sit next to me on two seats but I wasn't going to squash up on this occasion, especially as I'd just been to a hospital appointment that had aggravated the pain, and this woman pretty much had a go at me for taking up too much room! They also kindly let me have a disabled bay at work during my recovery which wound one particular manager up who tried to get it taken away from me!

So stop judging people on how they appear - you have no idea what they've been through or what they have.

Goblinchild · 05/03/2010 18:52

'And people please don't get so upset! I didn't mean to spoil anyone's afternoon.'

You didn't spoil mine, I've been dealing with far worse for far longer. You are merely a whinge in the storm. barely registers.

thecloudhopper · 05/03/2010 18:55

ANTIEMAGGIE who is that to?
