a couple have just taken over the lease of our local pub, they have been trying to rid it of its "rough" name and turn it into a more family orientated pub with food etc. I used to work there yonks ago and it worked v well as a family pub, it is on an estate, near a school and close to town centre.

someone has put together a "letter" from CPS claiming that the landlord is a convicted peadophile and is on the sex offenders register. this letter has been sent around facebook and ive had several people show it to me, its even been pushed through doors.

There is no way it is real. the grammar is appalling, the surname isnt even his, not to mention that if he's been convicted and imprisoned as claimed then he would have lost his personal license under the "child protection" element to name just one.

yet people are still determined to ruin their lives (no idea who started it or why) anyone with half a brain can see that its not real, the police have been involved (and have in return recieved many calls about him) and they have been told to ride it out, but why should they? Im fuming about this. they are nice people trying to make a living, if the brewery hedge their bets on this they will lose their livelihood, their home and reputation.

Bloody hell, that's rotten.

Yanbu at all.

Hope the community (as a whole) continues to support them.

frogetyfrog · 04/03/2010 14:43

Cant they get a letter from the authorities saying they are not on the sex offenders register etc etc. Then get local paper to publish it.

Rhubarb · 04/03/2010 14:44

Write to your local rag.

MouthAndTrousers · 04/03/2010 14:45

Could the local paper do a story on it and clear this poor persons name?

YANBU I hope the police catch thesr people.

ShinyAndNew · 04/03/2010 14:45

Yanbu. I'd go with Rhubarbs suggestion. But saying that there are an awfull lot of people who fall for rubbish like this and mud sticks.

queenoftheslatterns · 04/03/2010 14:46

its awful, they have had local nutjobs turning up and threatening them, the pub has been vandalised etc. its right between a community centre which doubles up as a nursery and a primary school ffs (ds goes there)

ive been telling everyone i know that its not real etc and so has dh, but mud like this sticks

I agree with the posters who say contact the local paper, yes mud sticks but a piece in the local rag will stop some of it.

This kind of thing makes my blood boil!

queenoftheslatterns · 04/03/2010 14:50

thanks all, i will suggest it to them. the pub is like a graveyard, its such a shame.

Defamation and damn serious too. ignorant owards are at work here. Paedophile accusations bandied about, this is always their default tactic as it is such an emotive issue. Police and public statement should ensue but the cowards have probably done enough damage.

bernadetteoflourdes · 04/03/2010 14:58

Is it a disgruntled rival landlord up to work
here?

Thats terrible, there was a case not so long ago of a man who died of a heart attack after constantly being accused by neighbours of being a paedophile after someone started an ugly rumour, the police did nothing then and look what happened.Id definately write to your local paper.

queenoftheslatterns · 04/03/2010 15:22

sorry, had to pick ds up from school. i will speak to dh about contacting local rag (he is manager of pub football team) I have been talking to a couple more mums about it today at school gate, most had heard rumour but as soon as i mentioned licensing laws (part of my degree was licensing/was in pub/restaurant trade pre-ds) they were horrified that someone would do this.
