to think mums who have rear-facing buggies for toddlers are the ultimate in preciousness?

Sorry I have had a glass of wine... (yes it only takes one these days).

I'm all for tiny babies being rear-facing, but older babies/toddlers? Don't you get a bit sick of all that cooing and smiling? Surely at that point they're in a buggy for a reason, either to get somewhere or to get them to sleep.

Stop smiling insanely at them. Turn them round so they can look at the world fgs.

OK confuddled would be interested to read the research in that case

lottiejenkins · 05/03/2010 07:56

Speaking as the mother of a deaf child, i always had my sons pushchair facing me so he could see me and what i was saying/doing!!!

ninedragons · 05/03/2010 08:18

Judge away.

But DD (2.1) can tell you perfectly clearly that helicopters have rotor blades, not wings, or the difference between a trug and a basket.

She was in a rear-facing pushchair from 3 months. Related? Possibly, possibly not. But I couldn't give a shit what you think about us.

what would you think of me, who doesn't even own a pram and slings my 16-month old everywhere, front facing? Or walks holding her hand?

scottishmummy · 05/03/2010 16:34

i think actually caring what pram somoene else has is bonkers.dont care if someone else pram is climate controlled turbo charged chariot

5DollarShake · 05/03/2010 16:59

My little one is forward facing in his pram (it faces both ways), and now I'm feeling guilty about it!!

He was always twisting and turning when facing back, and loves looking out at the world.

I don't get it - if the only time you talk with your child is in the pram, then of course a rear-facing pram is the best option.

But assuming they're not in their pram all day, and you talk to them the rest of the time, I'm guessing no irreparable damage will be done?

SpeedyGonzalez · 05/03/2010 17:04

Picante...I think it's the wine talking (in your OP). Why on earth would you care so much about something so inconsequential as to form an opinion on it?

(forward-facing over here)

confuddledDOTcom · 05/03/2010 18:37

runnybottom sounds like you've read the article!

I've not had chance to look for it since as I've been rather busy, but I'll see if I can find it.

liahgen66 · 05/03/2010 18:41

I don't think you could get a less precious parent than me and my 2 and half yr dd faces me.

because we like to chat, We walk alot and it's nice thank you very much. I don't sing, or coo, or play I spy, we simply chat about stuff.

Completely personal choice.

seashore · 05/03/2010 18:51

I completely agree with DebiNewberry's answer.

BrahmsThirdRacket · 05/03/2010 18:57

Lol at everyone who's saying 'my kid was in a rear-facing buggy and now he's a feckin' genius'. Yeah maybe.

I don't really see why you'd care, tbh.

yabu
I like to have my children facing me in their buggy. They like to be facing us too.
DD (walking) can speak to DS when he is parent facing , if she tries to speak to him when he is facing out she walks into the buggy and gets in the way.
I like to look at people when I speak to them. They like to ask questions when they can see me.
Ds really hates facing out. He cries and complains that he can't see us. I can see why tbh , it can't be nice sitting on your own while everyone else is walking along and chatting.

lovechoc · 05/03/2010 20:06

well I do a bit of both really because the Silver Cross is versatile enough for that. Some days it's forward facing, others its rear facing...

YABU - live and let live
YANBU - I'd be the same passing judgement after ONE glass of wine.

IPlayBanjoOnMyFanjo · 05/03/2010 23:08

Nice attitude Picunte

TrickyTeenagersMum · 05/03/2010 23:13

I bought one in a fit of Precious Second born madness. It was twice as heavy as a front facing Maclaren, took up four times as much space folded, cost seven times as much...and is in my shed growing mould if anyone wants it. I totally agree with you OP.

Tori27 · 05/03/2010 23:32

I like to have the option depending on where I am.

Personally I hate seeing mums walking along ignoring their kids because they can't see them as they are facing outwards, but then I think toddlers should only use buggies when necessary. DD is 2 and has used her pushchair less than 10 times in the last 4 months - but she's a good walker and only goes in the buggy when tired.

I think being a mum you realise at some point that it's best not to judge everyone else as each child and parent is different. x

blueshoes · 05/03/2010 23:43

YANBU.

Surprised at the number of mnetters with rear-facing buggies. Says it all really.

GenevieveHawkings · 05/03/2010 23:54

Struggling to see how a child child can't see he world when rear facing...

usualsuspect · 05/03/2010 23:59

As long as you can give them a greggs sausage roll it doesn't matter which way they face

GenevieveHawkings · 06/03/2010 00:03

And not forgetting a Fruit Shoot to wash it down!

agraves · 05/05/2010 13:46

Picante,
My goodness me! Have you read your post after sober?
Why in earth you wrote this post?

  1. How does it affect you what other parents do?
  2. Can other people enjoy their new parental experience as they wish? Why should you dictate how other parents should use their strollers??

This post is crazy to me... I would blame the wine.
