AIBU and oversensitive to be offended by this Tory advert?

I'm probably massively overreacting here but I just saw an advert for the Conservatives which offended me.

It's one of the 'I've never voted Tory before...' adverts which are everywhere at the moment. This one featured a black lady who said 'I've never voted Tory before but we need to sort out broken Britain.' This is the only advert to feature a black person, and rather than showing a smiling family or someone concerned with the economy they mention broken Britain. I just wish they could've shown a black lady worrying about family issues or something other than street crime and the breakdown of society. I usually roll my eyes at friends or family members who complain about being offended by minor things like this so I'm not sure why this in particular offended me.

Maybe I'm being oversensitive because of the Tories dreadful campaigning in my local area. Whilst the other two main parties knocked on my door and spent ages chatting and gave good answers to my questions, the Tories just walked down the road with a megaphone shouting at people.

Despite being a lifelong Labour voter I'd been giving some thought to voting Tory this time round, but things like this mean that I can't shake the feeling that they just wouldn't represent me as a mixed race woman.

I'm fully prepared to be told AIBU for this but just needed to rant!

YABU - you're really offended by this???

So, the colour of the person should reflect the reason behind them considering voting Conservative? It's you that has seen the colour rather than the reason for voting.

Get over it! Get real and spend more time on the manifestos not the pictures.

elliedodger · 01/03/2010 23:02

OK, I've calmed down now and am slightly embarrassed at my reaction. I was always brought up to believe that the Tories were a very racist party but recently I'd been thinking that they'd changed and my parents were a little out of date in their attitudes towards them, so I'm aware I was being oversensitive.

The Tory party was choc a bloc full of rascists back in the day.

Are they any different under Dave's leadership? Doubt it..

ABetaDad · 01/03/2010 23:12

I am struggling to see what you are offended by.

A black woman might be worried about Broken Britain just as much as a white woman or a family? She might also be worried about the economy.

I have not seen the advert. I am just going on your description of it.

NoseyNooNoo · 01/03/2010 23:19

Anyone get the impression that Tiredlady isn't going to vote Conservative?

longfingernails · 01/03/2010 23:39

The Tories will probably have more ethnic minority MPs than Labour after the general election.

YABU.

Another old Etonian leads them, they haven't changed. The choice is gay (allegedely) Gordon or a Toff.

RedbinDippers · 02/03/2010 00:07

YANBU to be ofended by anything that they advertise.

RedbinDippers · 02/03/2010 00:08

PS Whats happened to the spellcheck?

moondog · 02/03/2010 00:09

'I'm probably massively overreacting here'

Er,, yes.

It's an ad stating dissatisfaction at the staus quo, so whoever appears on it is going to be taking that line, be they black, white, green or yellow.

bernadetteoflourdes · 02/03/2010 00:22

tiredlady get a life, at least Cameron does not have to "shove" and "manhandle" his way to the top. My gaydar and my mates reckon he is a repressed, too scared to come out of the closet gay who does a bit of shoving as it is his only chance to cop a feel of gay flesh, He is a f--- dictator!

bernadetteoflourdes · 02/03/2010 00:25

oops meant to say male flesh there, got carried away

BertieBotts · 02/03/2010 00:26

They will have spent a lot of money and time on those adverts, it's not like they haven't been thought through. They will probably have agonised over what model to use in each photo - so if you have reason to be offended by it, then they are guilty IMO.

bernadetteoflourdes · 02/03/2010 01:09

I have just re-read my reply and knew I should have refused the 4th rather large glass of Sav Blanc tonight, suffice to say I have aroused myself from my slumber on the laptop and feel v. chipper. My "repressed gay" and "bully" accusations are v.clearly directed at our beloved leader Comrade Gordo, however I suspect redbindippers would class GB's bullying as ok as it is the touchy feely socialist version rather than the nasty tory type. xxx

tethersend · 02/03/2010 01:09

tiredlady speaks the truth.

OP, whatever stops you voting for them is fine by me.

LittlePushka · 02/03/2010 01:14

LOL at tethersend

bernadetteoflourdes · 02/03/2010 01:44

tired lady is talking out of her c--t if you ask me. Another 5 years of GB and Stalin will seem like a kindly, benevolent, paternal leader in contrast, Labour reduce this country to their knees every time with their cack handedness and unbeleivable arrogance check the History books.

tethersend · 02/03/2010 01:55

That was a party political broadcast on behalf of the Labour Party.

bernadette, if that post won't stop people voting tory, nothing will

Oh, and it's 'cunt' BTW.

bernadetteoflourdes · 02/03/2010 02:02

Tories back up by 7% in you gov poll tonight , amazing really as Cameron did not even have to blub all over Piers Morgan to get his "bounce", I guess Gordo's only hope now is a duet with Peter Andre or Susan Boyle. H is the epitome of Britan's got talent!
