parenting pet peeves...

bubbleymummy · 22/02/2010 22:15

I know I'm going to get flamed for this but I just don't care - I have to vent somewhere after a weekend of smiling and nodding and keeping my mouth shut!

Here is a list of 'parenting' traits that I absolutely hate!

Giving babies sugar - dessert/pudding/biscuits/cake - they do not need it - they are not missing anything and they are the reason that your child is already overweight!

Shovelling food into tiny babies, scooping it up and shoving it back in when the baby's tongue pushes it out while discussing the baby's excema, constipation, tummy upsets etc

Giving toddlers fizzy drinks such as Coke and letting them run madly around before screaming at them and complaining about how badly behaved they are.

Giving children calpol because it's been a 'long day' or because they have a slight sniffle or even a hint of a temperature or just because 'they like the taste'!.

controlled crying / cry it out - I hate this at any stage but I DESPISE it in children under 6 months. I don't care if your child has been sleeping through since 5 weeks - it is bloody cruel!

and breathe....

Ok feel free to flame me or alternatively add your own pet peeves!

Disclaimer : I by no means consider myself to be a perfect parent and I could fill several threads with my own parenting flaws.

Parents who judge other parents parenting choices. Having children is hard enough without having people look down their noses at you.

scottishmummy · 23/02/2010 23:18

judging is the lifeblood of mn,esp AIBU.threads with most posts are the one evoking and seeking a strong reaction

i judge wearing PJ's outside - manky cow
i judge baby ear piercings - brutalising
damn right i judge.

Chellesgirl · 24/02/2010 00:08

I dont 'judge'...I just have an opinion. I would never tell a mom to do somehting or not to do something unless it was gonna hurt her baby/child ... my mum brutalised me when I was younger sm she pierced my ears at 1yrs old..I still remember the place where I got it done...and they say you dont remember anything before 3yrs old... clear image in my head! (tho i cant remember what i was wearing) but Im glad she kinda did it young cause they havent ever closed up (I wouldnt do it to my dd, I wouldnt want to put her through the pain...and I only know the pain..cause I went on my own accord at 14yrs to have my second ones done! Now I wish I never..it was sooo painful and now they are closed up and always the ones to get hard lumps behind them.

Chellesgirl · 24/02/2010 00:09

oh and the PJ thing..that is disgusting..how can you justify sleeping in a garment, wear it to the shops where people sneeze and cough and bugs spread, not to mention the dirt on your slippers and tread it through the house and then go and sleep in it again! TRAMPS!!!!!!!!!!!

BitOfFun · 24/02/2010 01:31

There are loads of discussions about pyjamas-as-daywear on MN. What you are missing, Chellesgirl, is that the phenomenon is not generally associated with slovenliness, but a fashion trend of pjs as leisurewear which are freshly-ironed and put on for the express purpose of being seen outside.

I'm not a youngster- I don't make the rules

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 24/02/2010 04:42

LeQueen, if I ever said 'oh, too busy being a Mum' to you it'd be because I felt like a frumpy mess compared to you and was trying to justify it to myself.

(Never been outdoors in PJs, but my daughter likes to hide my hairbrush so unbrushed hair is not unusual around here)

Don't care about where a baby sleeps (actually, in Australia they don't really push the 'six months in your room' thing, I hadn't heard of that till coming on here, so maybe you can all dial down the judgment on that one), whther you use dummies or bottles or pushchairs.

Totally agree about ear piercing, though. Also - circumcision, for the same reason.

Ooh, and parents who use flash cards/those TV programs which are just basically flash cards on tiny ones. I have a friend who would prop her 6 month old up in front of the TV and then boast about how many letters he knew already.

cory · 24/02/2010 08:28

Dummies used to be one of mine. But I can't help noticing in retrospect that all my dummy-wearing nephews stoppped wearing the dummy after a couple of years, and my perfectly parented 13yo is still struggling to stop sucking her fingers. So maybe not so perfect after all.

Can't give her fingers away to Santa...

minxofmancunia · 24/02/2010 10:14

SAHMs who bleat on about the "sacrifices" they have made (not against SAHPs btw) in the name of motherhood. Friend once pointed out to me I we could downsize and just run one car to enable me to SAH. What!!!!! Go to all the hassle of moving into a smaller house (4 us live in a 3 bed semi, comfortable but not huge by any means, just moved from a tiny 2 bed terrace and have no intention of moving back there again)in order to devote my life selflessly to my dcs. No, stay where we are, have a decent quality of life and pay for excellent childcare thanks.

And running just one car would save us the equivalent of my salary , bollox.

Parents who's ONLY conversation is about the children, dullards.

BLW because of the name, makes it sound precious and faddy. HV practically looked as if she might refer me to social services when I said I'd try finger foods with ds but would be doing, gasp, mush as well.

Chellesgirl · 24/02/2010 10:41

Bitoffun - I am 'a youngster' lol at 22...but in Acocks Green it is NOT a fashion statement! its pure rediculous and looks wrong, and in your dressing gowns, pj's, slippers that have obviously not been iron or washed in days...is trampy to me!
lol @ you tho, for some moment of your post i actually thought you dressed up in your nightie just to do the food shopping - and btw..ASDA had BANNED it! yay!

Rocky12 · 24/02/2010 11:04

My son goes to school on Saturday mornings and a couple of weeks ago I was doing the school run in PJ's (although my DH normally does Saturday!)

I was planning to just drop him off without getting out of the car and just drive off. The Head has a habit of being at the drop off point everyday (really good idea btw, parents can have a quick word with him whilst passing by.) I normally just give a wave. This time he stopped me and said he wanted a quick word and could I come into the front office. I had to come clean and explain I wasnt appropriately dressed. He just laughed, I dont think it is the first time it has happened.

Chellesgirl · 24/02/2010 11:12

that Rocky isnt a problem - you didnt expect to do get out the car ...these girls and some women think its 'cool' or 'hip' (whatever [sigh] ) just to go get some milk from the shop or do food shopping dressed like the banana's in pajama's ...I hope you didnt sleep in the same pj's that night??? ;) schools contain so much bacteria!

FeedTheBeast · 24/02/2010 11:16

due my 1st in 3 weeks but determined not to do the following:

live fantasies of being svelte via children, "My dd1 (5) is so petite she can still wear size 18 months" or whatever blah blah. (the mother is far from thin).

feed the baby cold jarred food in the middle of the snow storm when it would have taken seconds to warm it up. the baby was visibly gagging on it, when asked if she had tried the said food - "no way am i eating that shit" "not warming it up why make a rod for your own back"

i give my dog more warm meals than she gives her baby.

cheesefarmer · 24/02/2010 11:20

I don't really give a shit what other parents do, as long as they aren't being abusive. Biggest parenting pet peeve would be all of this bloody JUDGING!

Igglybuff · 24/02/2010 11:45

I'm loving the judging on this thread. AIBU is mn for judging.

Just to add, my peeve is parents who update their facebook status for every little bloody thing that their kid has done:

"Kelly is so proud her lil man slept through the night"
"Chantelle's lil lady loved her baby rice all grown up at 12 weeks"
"Chardonnay's lil man is teething poor bubba".

I don't care.

Oh and I hate sneaky competitive parenting. I was at a baby group the other day and mums started putting their babies on the floor to show how they were sitting/starting to crawl/perfoming Olympic standard gymnastics. Whatever!

pranma · 24/02/2010 11:56

The only thing I really hate is children not getting enough love, not being allowed to feel safe with whoever cares for them, always being ignored, told NO or punished just for being children.
I am a grandma-I give the occasional choc button, fruit yoghurt for pudding, diluted apple juice for a drink.I sometimes put cbeebies on or a Thomas dvd.The dgc have home prepared balanced meals, warm colourful bedrooms, stories at bedtime, country walks at weekends etc. They are loved and very healthy and all 9 of them sometimes has a sweet treat.Imho many of these 'peeves' are about trivia and down to personal preference.

Chellesgirl · 24/02/2010 11:59

igglybuff have you got facebook 'circle of moms' ???? now thats judging! and boasting! and all the rest...

I have a mate like that who always comments on her lil boy being ill, or how he managed to tie his lace or do up his coat...to be honest i just think its cause they have no life other than that of thier child...
which, obviously is fine if you want a your child still living with you at 25!

Grandma pranma you sound sooo modest when you say the 'occasional' choc button - admit it they get the whole pack!

Oh and thats a 'peeve' of mine - t.v's in childrens bedrooms!

black and red are good colours for babies and magnolia/yellow has been the said to be the best colour for children. Im not a fan of bright colours in the bedroom...play time and sleep time should be seperate.

skinsl · 24/02/2010 12:08

Chellesgirl · 24/02/2010 12:09

Chellesgirl · 24/02/2010 12:10
