To spend £1200 on a UK holiday

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 19/02/2010 22:43

SEems like madness to me.

Two weeks in a static caravan, or rather, a chalet or bungalow on a holiday park.

We want to do one week in one place, one week in another. At the end of July.

£1200 seems a ridiculous amount of money to spend for 3 people on a UK caravan park.

What do you think?

yeah tis a right bugger for those of us who can only go in school hols some of those cottages look nice though, although not really cheaper but nicer looking.

we spent about £600 on a week at haven last year which was good, dd loved the entertainment and adventure playgrounds. You can only get the really good deal on summer holidays at haven if you are willing to pay up the entire amount in janaury or something ridiculous like that though

Is a great site where you rent directly from the owners - ususally have lots of nice things such as books and dvds and toys too

NormaSknockers · 20/02/2010 08:34

Ginger that was how we got such a good deal by booking & paying in January, wouldn't have been able to afford to go on holiday if it wasn't for the offer.

bonkerz · 20/02/2010 08:43

this is why we holiday in term time.
we are going scotland for 7 nights in may half term for £240 for 5 of us in caravan inc all entertainment and swimming and in october we are going 4 of us to sussex in a caravan and thats costing £180!

gingernutlover · 20/02/2010 08:51

now you're just teasing us bonkerz!

bellissima · 20/02/2010 09:29

I've started waiting until there's a decent weather forecast and then booking a cottage - eg last Easter when they said 'east' would be okay I got a last minute cottage in Norfolk. Okay you get what's left on the books, but there again if you try and book a cottage for Easter now they still want you to take Saturday-Saturday ie you can't have say Thursday-Monday. Having spent a fortune on summer holidays in Cornwall when it just rained I have given up booking in advance. Can't really understand the 'Cornwall' thing at all - if you said you were going to Wales or Manchester folk would mention rain - and, duh, Cornwall is supposed to be different?

Tortington · 20/02/2010 09:30

i think you could get a keycamp caravan in france including the ferry crossing for that, in school hols.

i think if you were prepared to go in a eurotent, you would get two weeks and have change

Tortington · 20/02/2010 09:37

keycamp caravan

http://2009.keycamp.co.uk/bookonline/searchResults.cfm?CFID=36161457&CFTOKEN=63736738 just a quick search for example

supertent saves you at least 300 quid

there is 15% off too if you book soon

check out venue they have the cheapest supertents

DecorHate · 20/02/2010 09:37

Wot Custy said. In fact if you book directly with the campsite you should be able to get a mobile home rather than caravan. If you can wait till the end of August the prices drop...

Tortington · 20/02/2010 09:37

oops messed up link

Tortington · 20/02/2010 09:38

first week in september, just before school starts - is a bargain

MrsBrendanCole · 20/02/2010 09:39

We've been to Torquay for the last 3 years and we love it! DH hates flying and I just know DS would be one of THOSE kids on a plane so we set off at 6am (all part of the holiday), have regular stops and its great.

We've been in july/august every year and whether we have just been very lucky im not sure, but its been very hot and we've all got nicely tanned, (though obv not DS!)
We sat outside cafe bars at night and I promise you, it was so warm and you could hear the sea, we couldve been in Spain.

We used to have very flash holidays pre-DS but now, we love Torquay, its s beautiful!

Tortington · 20/02/2010 09:46

buy a tent off ebay - go to torquay i bet you could do it for under £300

diddl · 20/02/2010 09:57

We are thinking of visiting UK at Easter.
It´s looking at about 500GBP for a week for a three bedroom property.

And it´s not a particularly "touristy" place.

bonkerz · 20/02/2010 10:24

no teasing!we have 2 weeks a year in uk and never pay more than £500 for both!

deaddei · 20/02/2010 11:36

We spend about £1000 for a cottage in Wales (sleeps 8) in August.
Then there's petrol, food, dinners out etc- we're looking at about £1800 in total. And it rains.
Not going this year as we're all having separate holidays for various reasons.
I wouldn't go to a cottage/apartment which wasn't as nice as my own house in terms of facilities, as it's not much of a holiday for me then.

MorrisZapp · 20/02/2010 11:47

Been to Cornwall once and loved it - weather was on a par with Spain.

But it didn't cost any less than going abroad. In fact a lot of it cost more.

If I had small kids I'd just do days out, I find travelling stressful enough without screaming kids and mountains of equipment.

Then when they're old enough it's Disney here we come

RnB · 20/02/2010 11:53

have just paid £850 for 1 week on Isle of Wight during the Easter hols for 6 of us . That does include ferry crossing though.

Really want to give the boys a holiday before the baby comes, tis a fortune though...

muminthecity · 20/02/2010 11:58

I'm dreading DD going to school in September for this reason. We have one or two UK holidays every year, have been to some lovely places (Dorset, New Forest, Somerset, Devon) and have never paid more than £200 for the week for two of us, but we've never been in school holidays. We're going to the Isle of Wight for 5 days in April and have only paid about £30 using vouchers from The Sun, and managed to book our travel for just £22! It will be much harder next year when DD is at school, I just don't think I'll be able to afford school holiday prices

whooosh · 20/02/2010 12:01

I (after many years of "trying",have decided,I will not spend our holiday in anywhere that is not as nice as our home.I reckon I could get a cleaning/ironing service, eat out regularly and have days out and spend less than it would cost in a dodgy caravan/chalet somewhere....my personal choice.I love the UK but I also love sunshine so would rather go overseas and be outdoors rather than in somewhere like Centreparcs (which I think is bloomin' expensive)

beeny · 20/02/2010 12:16

milly molly moo who did you book your Egypt holiday with please

MillyMollyMoo · 20/02/2010 12:55

beeny - It was Mark Warner - 7% mumsnet discount too and a fantastic hotel.

beeny · 20/02/2010 14:12

Thanks very much MillyMollyMoo

rookiemater · 20/02/2010 14:18

We do NCT houseswaps in the school holidays www.ncthouseswap.ning.com, doesn't cost a penny so more to spend on nice food and days out.

Oh and DS gets to play with toys that are new to him and there is usually a telephone number for a known and trusted babysitter.
