AIBU?

to think dh is, infact, a fussy eater?

DH and the dcs have been away for a few days at the ILs (fanfare, trumpets, balloons etc, although lovely to have them back of course) and so for two days I have been eating things dh does not like. Whilst he maintains that he is not a fussy eater, and very grateful for all I cook for him, I think he is, actually, really rather fussy given the list of foods he will not eat:

All fish, including all shellfish.

Aubergines

Blue cheese

Pork chops

Lamb in any shape or form

Chicken that is not breast

I think that makes him quite fussy.

Otoh, the only foods I cannot eat are cucumber, oysters and natural yogurt. So am very easy to accommodate, yes?

I'm with him on the chicken...but i like the blue cheese and fish..but not loving shell fish either..

I'm a fussy eater I admit it! I dont eat any meat apart from chicken breast, the occassional burger/hotdog,mince in bolognese...dont eat condiments (ugh),pickles (double ugh),raw tomatoes, celery, custard,I eat egg but only if I'm in the mood and its scrambled by my own fair hands or in rice.. amoungst other things..but I do eat things that others dont commonly like -blue cheese, brussel sprouts (love em),brocolli..actually any green stuff/veg,advocado,mushrooms,chilli (love hotness...

Shiney/cyclops - sorry if you were offended at all!

I just know how my picky eating as a child/teenager/adult restricted MY life. I had a lot of experiences during those years (camping, church events, living in communual halls etc) where I was hungry hungry hungry. At home it was fine because mum dished up the usual rubbish food we always had.

But as soon as I was away somewhere eating with a heap of other people I was hungry a lot - because at home healthy stuff was never on the menu, I was totally unprepared for it and would refuse to eat it (often I was too embarrassed to even try).

Now that I can eat almost anything (as long as its veggie) life is so much easier. I no longer need to worry about eating away from home - I hope that makes sense!

Goodness, no not offended!

My view on this is that tounge topography just varies between individuals.

Guess what, I just did this simple 'test' and got rated as a 'supertaster'!

You lost a pair of Ugg boots Shiney? I'd be bloody delighted if I'd done that, not that I'd have bought such monstrosities in the first place.

And everyone who owns them ought to make an appointment asap with Specsavers.

Shiney I'm the same as you, I don't like lots of food and I'm also a vegetarian. I still enjoy lots though and I make proper meals for the dcs.

So it's not the tastebuds for you, Cyclops, it's somewhere else in your head altogether?

I have long suspected that it's the exact same thing with my DCs, who are, frankly, a PITA to cook for. I think when it comes to fussy eating, I have the same attitude as Runnybottom. Most of the foods my DCs won't touch are foods they have never tasted, or have eaten in disguised form some time or another and asked for seconds. They love pate but you should hear them howl at the thought of liver. Ditto spinach, so I put it in homemade spinach lasagna noodles and call it green food colouring. And I bake carrot cake that I call orange cake. The list goes on...

So for me no meat (no fish either), don't like:
any lettuce
cucumber
tomatoes
mushrooms
peppers
red onion
soft cheese
blue cheese
chilli
avocado
aubergine
kidney beans
"bits" in anything

Loads more too hehe

I thought my dc were picky until my niece and her Mum stayed recently. Whilst they were here my dc even hoovered up onion soup which would have been previously unheard of . My niece is very fussy, won't eat cheese or stew and dumplings, lots of stuff really. I though my dd was bad with her hatred of mashed potato and rice.

I suppose it's different when you have more than one dc,you can't cater to each child's tastes without going mental or spending a fortune on the shopping bill, so they either eat or leave what's being offered.

I can't say I'm that fussy, the only thing I really hate and will not try is mushy food. I hate things like porridge and gumbo etc. I dont mind liquidy soups with lumps for example but cannot abide mush or purees yuck. Also anything flavoured with rosemary and parsley. Plus celery, sprouts and any kind of animal innards are no go lol.

Liver has a weird texture. That is why I/yourchildren can eat pate but not liver itself.

I am a less fussy eater than the OP's DH (and a lot less fussy than Shiney et al), but liver feels weird. If you are not a texture person you probably won't have noticed, or just won't care.

My ds will eat anything - including sprouts! - apart from any fruit of any type and roast potatoes. I think that is seriously weird! Who on earth doesn't like raspberries? Or my dp's roast potatoes, which are the best ever?

Well I guess my senses of taste, smell and sight are in my head (all of which are involved in eating, not just the obvious one: taste), so yes, you really are bang the money! It really IS all in my head.

I slice liver very thinly while it's still almost completely frozen and that way it's not slimy when cooked. I think they might like it if they didn't know it was liver. I had two or three slices of tongue once without being told what it was and I know I probably would have been hesitant to try it if had known what it was. I thought it was delicious actually, but I know my DCs would run screaming from the house if they knew a tongue had even crossed the threshold, let alone been cooked and sliced and served.

I get impatient because there are 5 of them and I'm not a short order cook but they seem to think I'm running a restaurant.

Cyclops, just looked at that taste quiz, with only 5 questions, how can the size of a restaurant say anything about the number of taste buds you have? Or the desire to keep talking say you don't savour food?

Bizarre.

Another cucumber disliker here. If it's not immediately fresh, it smells like wet dog and tastes minging.
I am apparently a supertaster too, though not by doing that quiz! I researched it a bit last year.
I hate coffee, grapefruit, lamb, blueberries, a few other bits but I'm generally not too bad!

Seeker- my mum loathes raspberries, pathologically, she has all her life! Even the smell turns her stomach. She is otherwise very level headed and normal

Report
YanknCock · 20/02/2010 21:50

That test is bollocks. It reckoned I am a supertaster. I'm not fussy at all, will try anything, like coffee, grapefruit, and spinach (not as keen on cabbage/brussels sprouts but will eat them).
