AIBU?

to think dh is, infact, a fussy eater?

DH and the dcs have been away for a few days at the ILs (fanfare, trumpets, balloons etc, although lovely to have them back of course) and so for two days I have been eating things dh does not like. Whilst he maintains that he is not a fussy eater, and very grateful for all I cook for him, I think he is, actually, really rather fussy given the list of foods he will not eat:

All fish, including all shellfish.

Aubergines

Blue cheese

Pork chops

Lamb in any shape or form

Chicken that is not breast

I think that makes him quite fussy.

Otoh, the only foods I cannot eat are cucumber, oysters and natural yogurt. So am very easy to accommodate, yes?

I don't think YABU, but on the other hand I don't think your dh is either. Out of his list I agree with all but blue cheese and pork chops. I'd like to add tea, offal, fish sauce, batter and cheap sausages to that list. I do cook all of the things that he won't eat, but don't eat them myself. What a sainted woman I am.

Am a veggie and also dislike mushrooms and wouldn't choose to eat blue cheese. Although if someone served a dish containing a few mushrooms or with a blue cheese sauce I'd eat it up and say 'thank you'. Could not stomach a dish where mushrooms were the main ingredient, though.

DH's mate has a new girlfriend and he was cooking for her on their first Valentines a few days ago - he came asking me for a recipe for a starter..

"She's Vegetarian" he says - fair enough - "I'm cooking Sea Bass"

"So she's not really a vegetarian" I reply

"No, suppose not. She'll also eat chicken. And Bacon. Just not red meat"

Not so much Vege as fussy IMO!

Would he still be "fussy" if he was a veggie who didn't like aubergine and blue cheese?

My DCs will not eat
onions - 5/5 will not eat
mushrooms - 5/5 " " "
anything green - 3/5 " " "
tomato sauce with identifiable tomato parts in it - 5/5 " " "
lamb - 4/5 " " "
fish except breaded fillets (one will not eat any fish at all) -- 4/5 eat some fish
cheese except on pizza - 3/5 " " "
rice - 1/5 (What is wrong with rice???)
whole wheat breads - 3/5 " " "
eggs - 1/5 " " "
nuts - 3/5 " " "
They also object to different fruits, yogurt flavours, snack bars. It's hard to keep up with it.

DS is one of the worst offenders (eats eggs but everything else gets poked) followed by DD3 and DD4. Oldest two DDs have improved with age and ridicule from friends.

I am a fussy eater, always have been since I was a kid! I won't eat:

beans, in any shape or form
weird stuff like tripe, liver, kidneys
raw fish or other weird fish
celery
beetroot
anything from a goat
weird puddings (rice pudding, semolina)
weird stuff like lentils, humus, cous cous)
aubergines
avocado pears
most pork products (except Greggs sausage rolls )
suet dumplings
black pudding
olives
spinach
courgettes
weird things like oysters, clams, mussels
salmon
artichokes

I could go on.

I have a very juveline set of taste buds.

I always maintain that everyone's taste buds are different. I don't think my mum dislikes anything!

TBH, that doesn't sound anywhere near as fussy as some people I know (my brother, for one, though he gets better with age). My grandad was a real 'meat and two veg' kinda guy. We'd have birthday parties every now and then, and my mum would buy pizzas...and then a quiche lorraine, as he wouldn't touch pizza. Or any of that 'foreign muck'; I guess that's he thought of it. He was only that way about food mind.

The chicken thing is weird though. If he likes chicken breast, there really is no reason he can't eat chicken thighs or drumsticks or something. Chicken's chicken, except for the breast meat being (usually) drier and blander, and genrally more unpleasant than other types.

What makes a food 'weird' Cyclops, just out of interest?

Report
Cyclops · 19/02/2010 20:34

god knows, just food that looks or seems unpalatable in some way to me !

I mean, come on, eating liver? kidneys? tripe? slimy stuff like oysters?

I grew up with all the above (and more hideous stuff besides) being cooked at home but I wouldn't eat it.

I dreaded lunchtimes at primary school, except for Fridays which was fish finger day!

I would sit and watch as the dinner ladies wheeled out the day's offerings....and my heart would sink as I spotted green beans, steak and kidney pie and boiled potatoes followed by rice pudding.

I was always glad to sit on the same table as the tubby kid...and he was always pleased to sit next to me cos he would get to eat two dinners and I would avoid having to eat horrible food. Win win!

I dont eat any of those things onyour list either bibbity - except aubergines which I do like.

I dont call your list fussy - I prefer to think of myself as vegetarian

But have you ever tasted any of them?

I guess I'm wondering how much of all this is in my DCs' heads and how much is actually a matter of tastebuds. The tomato sauce having to be pureed is about texture I suppose, but it tastes the same. I'm not a fussy ester at all and find myself getting a bit impatient with the DCs, wondering if they can help it or if there's really something 'bitter' and unpalatable about broccoli for instance, or what it is about peas that freaks them out.

Crikey, that list of dislikes would drive me nuts - yes, he's fussy!

And compared to Shiney, twinsets dp and the other fussy lists on this thread your dh is a great eater - he is basically a veggie!
Which isnt fussy - its a life style choice

A question for the fussy eaters - Can you pinpoint why you are a fussy eater? Is it a taste thing or maybe something to do with childhood? Does it bother you/frustrate you?
I am genuinely interested

I for example hate brassicas, tea and coffee - which doesnt bother me, but seems to annoy other people!!

I have tried some of the items on my list. Once at primary school, a teacher joined my table (which I absolutely dreaded cos I knew what it meant...) and sure enough, she insisted that I try at least a mouthful of baked beans.

She went on and on as I resisted her attempts...cos I knew I didn't like them (I didn't even need to taste them to know that).

Anyway, I eventually had little choice so put the fork in my mouth...and promptly gagged as I swallowed. I can still see the look on this woman's face today. Horrified!!

I have not eaten a bean since. Even in the States in cowboy country!

I usually know I won't like something just by looking at it.

I'm torn here, I really am. On the one hand I think everyones different, people can like what they want etc etc.

But on the other hand, I tend to think......

GROW UP! FFS, your're not 6, its only a bit of butter/lentil/insert foodstuff here! Just bloody eat it and stop acting like a toddler!

Oops. Too many years living with a man who won't eat butter. Or cream, or anything that looks as if it may have butter or cream, even if it doesn't. Or tofu, pulses, many vegetables, fish with heads on, "ugly food".......

In the case of my dp it all comes from childhood. His father was either out on the rob, in prison or in the pub. His mum was always in the pub. He lived on his own and fed himself. There was no money so he had to beg for his food budget. There was often no electricity in the house so he would make fire in the garden and make himself beans on toast or heat tinned soup. To this day that is how he likes to eat - not over a fire but stuff from a tin. He loves camping.

Wow thanks for answering my question folks - I find it really sad tbh your lives must be so restricted surely. I was a difficult eater as a child/teenager and it wasnt fun.

pmsl at 'ugly food' !!

I have grown up and thank god for that cos I can now choose what to eat!

'restricted'...not so when there's a McDonald's in just about every corner of the globe .

On business once in Athens, all my colleagues chose to eat in the hotel. Not me. I hot-footed it to McDonald's every evening.

And quelle surprise! Many colleagues became sick with food poisoning. Not me!!!
