In thinking Valentines Day is just a load of shite?

...dreamt up by marketing people to make teenagers spend money?

if you love someone you don't let them know it just one day a year

I'd rather have dh play with the kids or make me a cup of tea rather than a bunch of over priced flowers or stupid socks out of asda than have "sexy" written on them

Totally agree op.
Equates with Mothers and Fathers Day IMO.
Meaningless, commercial tosh.

agalchchangedhername · 14/02/2010 09:49

I agree that is is too commercial and it is a con to bump up prices etc.

But DH is getting the girls organised today and doing brekkie etc and he bought me TheTime Travellers Wife cos he knows i loved the book so that kinda thing i like!!!

He is lovely all year round but likes to make a fuss of me on Valentines day too. I don't really do anything for him however

posieparker · 14/02/2010 09:51

I did send a card to DH but i'm so pissed off with him I could only muster a '?'

queenoftheslatterns · 14/02/2010 09:57

totally agree. dh has spent all week looking after me while i had terrible D&V, looking after ds, cleaning the house etc, THATS love (holding your DW's hair out of the way while she is vomitting... AGAIN and then cleaning the loo) not a few flowers and chocolates.

ceres · 14/02/2010 10:03

hmmmmmmmm. personally i think life is miserable enough so i am up for ANY reason to celebrate.....birthdays, valentines, xmas, a sunny day. whatever.

valentine's day is a bit like xmas in that it is as commercial as you make it. we celebrate valentines - but it is certainly not the only day of the year that we show our love for each other. we make it personal to us - it's a bit of fun.

it's up to you really, you can think valentine's day is a load of shite and that's fine. just as long as you don't rain on anyone elses parade if they decide that, actually, they want to celebrate it. personal choice, it's not obligatory.

diddl · 14/02/2010 10:06

I think it´s nice to remember Valentines Day.

You don´t have to spend money on something commercialised though.

WhereYouLeftIt · 14/02/2010 11:05

B*gger, is it Valentine's Day? Have missed sending my mum's birthday pressie in time (again

Kaloki · 14/02/2010 11:51

whereyouleftit D'oh!

We can't be arsed with it here. We didn't even realise it was today till someone pointed it out to us.

thewindymiller · 14/02/2010 12:03

What a load of miseries. What's wrong with having one day a year that's a bit more romantic that the rest? Just ignore the junk in the shops and have a bit of fun.

"What's wrong with having one day a year that's a bit more romantic that the rest?"

Nothing at all, however we pick our own. Usually anniversaries. Means more, and isn't usually accompanied my shops full of awful tacky stuff.

PorphyrophillicPixie · 14/02/2010 12:09

YADNBU, but then I've been ditched for Valentine's and am extremely peeved at my OH this year so that might be my reasoning!

ohnelly · 14/02/2010 17:53

Yanbu I told DP not to bother getting me anything & not to expect anything from me either - miserable I know haha I dont care

TheSunAndTheMoon · 14/02/2010 18:39

YANBU, it's a load of shite.

Made the effort to buy a card for him, make him a cup of tea in bed etc, to be told "I've got you a card, it's in the car, I'll get it in a minute".

That was 11 hours ago. Hardly any point now, is there? So I'm feeling just a little bit neglected when I'm already down in the dumps.

Yes, it DOES matter, to me anyway.

Pah. Humbug.
