to wonder why on earth you'd pierce a 6 month old's ears?

Was in a shop today browsing with dd and suddenly heard the most agonising screams coming from the front of the shop, turned round and saw one of the shop assistants piercing a baby girl's ears. Poor little thing was in agony. Overheard her asking the mother how old the little girl was and she said six months. There then followed a list of instructions from the shop assistant on what to do if the baby got an infection from the piercing.

I can't believe someone would willingly inflict that sort of pain on a tiny baby, just so they can wear ear rings. My mum had my ears pierced when I was only 4 and I thought that was too young.

Am I missing something here?

No, you're not missing anything.

It's ghastly and child abuse imo - yes, even if Spanish and its 'part of your culture'

chippy47 · 12/02/2010 16:02

No -I hate it. When I see friends who have had their childrens ears pierced it drives me nuts. And strangers for that matter. Apart from the process it doesn't actually look very good on children so young.

Hello and welcome to MN.

Just to let you know, this topic has been discussed on here many, many times. Usually starting with somebody seeing a baby being pierced in Claire's.

It's not that you can't talk about it again and perhaps people might like to discuss it again but there's a fair to middling possibility that many people won't want to cover this. They might even Make Comments. They are not directed at you but at the mind-numbing interminability of having the same arguments week in week out.

Perhaps try searching ear piercing on here and enjoy the arguments from a distance.

If you wish to continue here I promise you somebody will be along in a minute to mention 'cultural reasons' somebody will use the word 'abuse', somebody else will bring up 'circumcision' then 'female genital mutilation', the immortal line 'babies are beautiful already' will be uttered and a lone voice will defend her dd Tia-Maria and her be-studded ears.

I'm psychic you know.

HappyMummyOfOne · 12/02/2010 16:06

I hate it too, piercing should be illegal until age 16. Piercing in children looks cheap and tacky, not to mention it can cause horrible injuries.

ShowOfHands · 12/02/2010 16:08

See culture already mentioned, it's true to form already.

LowLevelWhingeing · 12/02/2010 16:09

excellent x post there mystic meg showofhands!

ShowOfHands · 12/02/2010 16:09

Yes, yes horrible injuries. I forgot that bit. Somebody will have been at school with someboy whose older sister had a piercing ripped out by a feral rottie.

muggglewump · 12/02/2010 16:10

I love you your post SOH

DorotheaPlenticlew · 12/02/2010 16:12

SoH, thank you for doing that so nobody else has to!

ShowOfHands · 12/02/2010 16:14

Aww, I love you yours too muggle. I was going to flip the biscuit, but thought I'd make the effort one, to explain and two, to test my psychic abilities before I fork out on the euromillions.

PS Do you still have that Jedward bag? Have the fashion police confiscated it and burnt it in a ritual ceremony?

Jamieandhismagictorch · 12/02/2010 16:17

Now SOH - can you look into your crystal ball and outline the aguments pertaining to Buggies on Buses, McDonald's, Smacking, Old People on Buses, and Jars of Babyfood ......

sweetkitty · 12/02/2010 16:21

you forgot that little Tia-Maria was weaned at 8 weeks and is perfectly fine studded ears and all!

notmyname · 12/02/2010 16:22

A cultural thing...

But for those who think of it as child abuse... well there are things British do that are considered child abuse abroad, and actually more damaging in the long term than piercing the ears... but that is another thread on it's own right.

notmyname · 12/02/2010 16:23

ShowofHands... a psychic indeed!

CwtchyMama · 12/02/2010 16:24

Yes, but was said child eating a greggs sausage roll & drinking a fruit shoot whilst being pierced?

SeaTrek · 12/02/2010 16:26

YANBU

To make it worse they look horrible, too!

ShowOfHands · 12/02/2010 16:28

James, I'll just finish my p&t space summary of key points and then I'll tackle all of the other MN cliches in due course.

usualsuspect · 12/02/2010 16:29

again

muggglewump · 12/02/2010 16:43

I do not love you that post SOH.
You are showing hostility towards the bag.

I still love it, and use it most days. It is a talking point. Most people love it, or are too polite to call the men in white coats say otherwise.

I want a black one, but they are sold out.

I think all the other Jedward fans have bought them.
Neve rmind though, just three weeks on Tuesday and I will actually see them

UnquietDad · 12/02/2010 16:47

I don't know why anybody would pierce a 6 year old's ear's, let alone a 6 month old. I'd say it's still open for meaningful debate at 16.

Saw a boy of about 9 coming out of DD & DS's school today with a huge David Beckham style diamond-like ear stud. I really wanted to take him aside and say, "Mate... you do know you look a RIGHT PRAT??" But he probably had as big tattooed dad nearby.

UnquietDad · 12/02/2010 16:48

OUCH, I did NOT put that apostrophe in EARS. Where the fuck did that come from?? apologies.

GetOrfMoiLand · 12/02/2010 16:59

haha at ear's.

Oh you have so let yourself down there, UQD.

I totally agree re ear piercing. DD (14) would be allowed ear piercing at a push. Any other piercing is Out Of The Question.

Imagine being the type of scroat who takes a baby into Clare's to have its ears done.

LittleMrsHappy · 12/02/2010 17:04

because they want to have cheap tat to make their already beautiful child "apparently" even more beautiful.

Its disgusting and people who get their babies ears pierced when they have NO voice off their own needs their head examined by the MH!

usualsuspect · 12/02/2010 21:02

How would you not let a 16 year old have their ears pierced? now thats odd
