I've had three health visitors in 16 years of parenting.
HV no 1 for DS1 was 3 years from retirement, loved her job and had developed a great many ways of making new mothers feel good about themselves. She advocated a glass of wine a day. Favourite quote "a happy mother is a good mother".
HV no 2 when DD1 and DD2 were tiny and failing to follow any flipping lines on any growth chart ever printed. Was married to a Ghanaian man, had lived in Ghana and nursed starving infants and really sick children. Favourite quote : "Are you worried about her?"
HV no 3 (current one) is in her early fifties. She is totally cool about the fact that DD3 is crashing downwards through the growth chart lines just like her sisters before her (from 7lb 6 at birth she now weighs 12 lb 9 at 23 weeks) . Favourite quote: "You don't spend this long in HVing without learning a thing or two". Is also totally wonderful at making mothers feel good, and to advise i a non-intrusive way.
Judging by the number of poor experiences reported on MN, it looks as though I've been extraordinarily lucky with mine.
