To think Dirt Girl World on Cbeebies is utter diarrhoea

I'm watching it at the moment with my 5 year old daughter, she seems to like it. I think it's awful. Something obout it just dosn't seem right for young children, not sure what it is. Maybe it's the dodgy title or the fact that the little girl wears make up and acts in a kind of flirty way.
I just hate it, am I alone?

Hate it. Hate her. Along with all the other useless female characters on Cbeebies - Zingzillas, Upsy Daisy, the Waybuloo lot etc. They're all so bloody mimsy: the character equivalent of pink power tools.

hester · 05/12/2010 18:33

I hate it. And Waybuloo.

Someone said earlier that in RL little girls pout and bat their eyelashes. Really? Not in my ruddy house, and we've got four females in here.

PatFig · 05/12/2010 18:48

I like Dirtygirlworld
the songs are good too the tractor song is fab

expatdad19 · 11/12/2010 23:31

I've just watched dirt girl for the second time with my mother in law and my son. We both thought the animation was just brilliant. I think that the sexual feel to the characters comes from the fact that the mouths and eyes are large and that the expressions and enunciation are exaggerated. However, i think this was intended to make the words and actions of the characters easier for children to understand and pick up on. If you are worried about the message then don't watch it. One of my best friends sister just adopted 4 year old orphan twins from Africa and they have had problems with flirtatious behavior from their daughters. The adoption agency warned them of this as most orphans have abandonment issues resulting in promiscuity. This is a survival mechanism designed to ensure a "parent/provider" is looking after them. People don't become overly flirty from media, they get it from neglect.

Swiss721 · 22/01/2011 06:51

"the title sounds like some weid euphamism for something involving anal sex."

???? I think u spend 2 much time on the web!! I think to most peeps it conjures up images of gardening, which oddly enuff is what its about.

"Scrapboy reminds me of Pete Doherty. Which can't be good" lol too true. dirt girl is cute tho, not enuff red heds on tv.

btw wot does DS stand 4? nothing to do with police i take it?!

mackaffey · 03/02/2011 08:21

I take it no-one has ever seen (or had to sit through) about a million episodes of In The Night Garden? Seriously, with weird things that can't speak, called all sorts of names made from alphabet soup - that you learn NOTHING from. If anyone HAD, they would think Dirtgirl World was perfectly normal. Both son and daughter love it and learn about nature as well. It is a kids show, afterall.

Kalypso · 03/02/2011 08:45

Isn't this an old thread? I think the mix of animation and photomontage is a good idea, but her coquettish expressions are really off-putting. It's particularly noticeable in this clip (skip to 1:05):

She also looks like her eyes are caked in make-up. Yuck.

Duskjoy · 21/02/2011 10:45

Love the fact that dirtgirl is DIFFERENT, and uses original rock music. Are young kids really going to think dirtgirl is trying to seduce them??? Is DG really going to teach young girls to flirt like a britney video clip might??? Have to agree with expatdad.

I get and respect why some people might not like aspects of the show, but my son and I enjoy it for the reasons it was created. To entertain and educate. We are lucky enough not to be freaked out by the appearance of the characters (maybe cos we are Aussies?!).

On the other hand, I have major issues with the tuneless rantings on yo gabba gabba, not to mention the over the top dialogue. Similar issues with dora n diego dialogue. Insulting the kids intelligence in my view eg: "do you see the ...?" Nah, why would I if it's right in front of me (?!) BUT, having said this, my son loves them all so I tell him that it's OK if we don't like all the same things, and I vacate the room...

NotAPearlClutcher · 11/03/2011 17:12

crazy. i cant believe how much some people read into kids shows. For sure, I too, censor what my kid watches, but the show is MADE for kids, so i dont think theyre going to hint on sex. DirtGirl is NOT provocative. Are you kidding me? Shes not winking at the camera, I was just watching it trying to figure out whats going on with her face, and its clearly just a twitch. (yes, it slightly annoyed me, but i didnt thing "OMG! Shes trying to lead my sweet innocent little boy into her love cave!!") Gosh, the more i read these forums, i realise more that some parents read far too much into these shows. Theyre made for small children, they are approved by multiple networks, censory boards, etc, and i dont think people are trying to teach your children about sex at such a young age. Has ANYONE watched a Disney movie with their children? Theres always at least one joke in a movie thats generally aimed at the older audiences, that children wont understand (if they laugh, its cause mom and dad laughed) thats more suggestive then the crap on KIDS TV.
As for the title, are you kidding me?! DirtGirlWorld. Its about the environment, you know...where DIRT is?! shes a girl. its her world. OH MY GOSH SOMEONE CALL THE PARENTS ASSOCIATION! Maybe im just bitter becuase i dont understand where youre all comming from, but a bit of diversity and real world situatios arent going to corrupt or harm your child. Its not bad for them, (even if there isnt really wrong with this program in general), it wont desensitize them, it wont harm them. remember, they dont understand what you find wrong. they havent learned that "dirt girl" sounds like "dirty girl" to you. Dont stifle them.
plus, im sure you all watched bugs bunny and tweety (or a variation) when you were younger. have you watched that since youve become an adult? did you notice that its ACTUALLY riddled with sexual references and racist comments?
sorry for the rant and all. i just dont really get it. if you really want to control your child's development that heavily, by all means, theyre your child. if i offended you, so sorry, you offended me too.
have a lovely day :)

Deliainthemaking · 11/03/2011 17:14

I sort of wanna see it now out of morbid curiosity

MudMomma · 18/03/2011 21:20

OMG i so agree with NotAPearlClutcher. Yall are reading way too much into the show. Ya i thought the show was a bit annoying at first. My little girl loves it though. The title omg how much of a tard do people have to be. She likes digging and gardening that is why she is Dirt Girl and it is her world that she is showing to us. Like Scrap Boy tinkers and builds things with scraps .. DUH!!!! The show is CG Animated that is why they dont exactly look like real people. It is a kid show. They make the eyes and head all big and stuff to draw the child's attention. I mean hell its not like when teletubies were on where you had the purple teletuby (who was played by a gay guy) having spilled food in his lap and having the vacuum cleaner suck it out of his lap and hes making noises of pleasure. So Yall need to get over yall selves and let you kids watch the innocent show. I am sure if there was something wrong with the show they would not have put it on Sprout.

PoppaRob · 28/04/2011 18:22

I'm a 53 year old grandfather who provides daycare for my 2 year old grand-daughter. I try to keep her busy with a mix of trips to the shops, to our local beach, to play with other toddlers in my area, we play in the backyard and, of course, we watch some TV and DVDs. Dora has been a favourite, as have In The Night Garden, Chuggington, Thomas The Tank Engine, DirtGirlWorld, and the tie in program Giggle and Hoot. My grand-daughter's speech has finally got to the stage where she's stringing together basic sentences and voicing her needs and opinions, so with some inspiration from DirtGirlWorld we've fenced off a section of the backyard, planted some sunflower seeds, started a worm farm and compost heap, and we're going to build a henhouse and get some chooks. I'm not a big fan of In The Night Garden... UpsyDaisy seems to have a thing for kissing everything in sight, and how come IgglePiggle can pilot an aircraft but still has a bedtime... but my grand-daughter loves the show so who am I to judge? Maybe it's because I'm an Aussie and we're a practical and easygoing mob who tend to look for the good in people rather than the bad, but I have to wonder about the agenda and hangups of some of the people posting strong negative comments about DirtGirlWorld. Enjoy the music and the eco message and have fun with the show!

colditz · 28/04/2011 18:28

MudMomma, don't say 'tard' please.

bullet234 · 28/04/2011 18:40

I don't think there's anything provocative about DirtGirl. I do think it's banal tripe.

lauhel10 · 02/05/2011 23:27

You can find the cast of Dirtgirlworld @ www.imdb.com/title/tt1638062/ I love this show and think it very creative. Not typical, but even I've learned a lot about gardening from watching it with my daughter. I do have to admit the animation threw me off, but given a chance it is quite addicting! I've even watched it by myself. Weird? yes.

vess · 03/05/2011 00:02

It's vile, I've only seen it once or twice and I hated it! DD hated it too (she was 5 then). There definitely is something subtle and sexual about it - not aimed at seducing kids, of course, more like a slightly sick joke aimed at adults for their amusement. Come on - nobody makes faces like that when they are gardening!
And, by the way, I've never thought that about any other children's programme - and I've seen loads.

mrsQuintas · 04/05/2011 20:30

it's creepy and her voice is annoying ! my dd prefers "guess with jess" :)

PoppaRob · 08/05/2011 04:59

I've bought the 3 DirtGirlWorld DVDs available. In the first few episodes DirtGirl had a British voice. In the later ones she had an Aussie voice. The storylines in the later ones are better too. Just saying.

oldermumof3boys · 12/06/2011 05:34

I can't believe how much you've all missed the point! It's about getting out in the real world, away from the tv and the computer games and getting dirty in the garden - not a bad thing for pouty little girls really! It's got a lot of science in it and the message is about caring for the environment - but then, I guess lots of people don't really care that much obviously.

chubbly · 12/06/2011 06:03

I kind of like it - it has a nice Eco message and some factual bits. I cannot stand Waybuloo; it's the fully fledged butterfiles hatching out of eggs with no catapillar stage and tomatoes growing on trees. But my biggest dislike is Yo Gabba Gabba songs. Unfortunately dd loves it so I must have the 'try it you'll like it...' song repeating in my head all day.
Dirt Girl is nothing compared to a few years down the line... The 'girl' shows that CITV have aimed at I guess 6-8, has anyone seen Totally Spies? Argh!

JumpOnIt · 12/06/2011 08:47

The first time my DD watched it, it made her cry. She said she doesn't like the scary faces. I suppose it is quite creepy if you're small.

Wibble - surely you can't mean what you said about LazyTown! I have ulterior motives when it comes to DD watching that one. Wink

Jason627 · 24/11/2011 09:27

Couldnt believe it, such a horrible rude and flirty programme!

vess · 24/11/2011 11:17

I've changed my mind about it slightly - still find it creepy, but 2 yo D2 seems to like it, so she's welcome to watch it if it keeps her quietGrin

donnadaycare · 02/07/2013 04:21

I have just stumbled on this thread and note that it is somewhat old BUT I hope that means that the majority of the above here have now got a grasp on what Dirt Girl is all about. The environmental message seems to have been missed completely by the haters. I am an early childhood educator and find this program extremely valuable. I am saddened by the number of people that can draw a sexual connotation here - I think that is reflective of the individual mind set not the characters message in the show. Shame. If you find the show disturbing turn off the TV and go outside and plant something that will nourish your children in both nutrition, nurturing and knowledge. If you are not sure where to start come back, turn the tv back on and actually watch and learn from Dirt Girl.
