The council provided the whole area with wee boxes with lids and handles to put your food waste in.

This was about 4 months ago.

They were left in gardens with a leaflet.

There are loads still thrown in peoples front gardens, with leaflets attached just untouched.

DH has gone out to collect a few as they ar really good boxes for small bits of toys ike individual lego sets.

AIBU to just agree with him.

Thats not what they are meant for but people aren't using them and people are even buttig them out with the bins for collection by the binmen (who aren't taking them just putting them back in garden)

no it's not ok
they are not yours
take them to the council if it bothers you
when people move houses they'll be on to the council for new ones adn at the end of the day your council tax will go up

sorry to be harsh but it's stealing

Yes, it is stealing. They aren't yours.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 31/01/2010 13:54

While I agree with you technically Compo and it is stealing, why shouldn't somebody use them rather than have them sit around?

Disenchanted3 · 31/01/2010 13:54

Its a shame they aren't being used but NOONE round here recycles at all, theres never any blue/brown/green bins out, on recycling day the bintruck just drives past!

OP posts:
Disenchanted3 · 31/01/2010 13:55

Oh yes hes ASKING, hes not just going in and taking them!

OP posts:
compo · 31/01/2010 13:56

kreecher - well I guess if yuo asked first then it wouldn't be straling

or maybe the owner of the house might want to use them for toys, or put them on ebay or take them back to the council

the op can't just take them!

Yes but I know they are meant for another purpose so was unsure us having them here filled with lego was ok or not, regardless of whether people agree to us having them.

OP posts:
TheProvincialLady · 31/01/2010 14:08

If your DH is asking the owners then obviously it is not stealing, but it is a shame that people aren't using them as intended.

lou031205 · 31/01/2010 14:51

I think you will find that like the refuse bins, they are still owned by the council even when provided for householders' use. So by giving them to you, the householders are breaking the terms of supply, and by using them you are stealing them.

YABU.

But when my house didn't have a wheelie bin we rang up and they told us that councils provide per street not per house.
So it is fine to make use of the other boxes on your street.

Goodadvice1980 · 31/01/2010 15:11

YABU, they are not yours to take without asking (and they are the Councils property anyway).

Why not be more proactive in encouraging community recycling rather than helping yourselves from other people's gardens??

That would be far more beneficial to your DC then extra containers for lego ffs.

compo · 31/01/2010 15:14

Well it did sound like op's dh was just taking them without asking, lol
is he back yet ? How many did he get?

compo · 31/01/2010 15:15

We use empty ice cream tubs for Lego

Disenchanted3 · 31/01/2010 15:20

I wouldn't be much good for that as I don't recycle either.

He was given 2.

OP posts:
Missus84 · 31/01/2010 15:25

Wouldn't it be better to give them back to the council?

Wispabarsareback · 31/01/2010 15:31

Why don't you recycle, Disenchanted3?

Disenchanted3 · 31/01/2010 15:36

I don't really fancy a bus ride into town wih 3 children under 5 to drop off two boxes to a bewildered council receptionist, lol. And Ivery much doubt the council would send someone round the areato collect abandoned boxes.

The house owners were happy to give so I'm happy to have them.

OP posts:
Undercovamutha · 31/01/2010 15:37

Find it very bizarre that noone in your street seems to recycle. Our street is crammed with different coloured bins and boxes on refuse day.

Why don't you recycle Disenchanted?

Undercovamutha · 31/01/2010 15:38

x posted! So your council doesn't pick up the recycling then? How very odd!

Disenchanted3 · 31/01/2010 15:40

Thats not what the thread was about. I was just wondering if it were better these boxes used fo something rather than being left rotting in gardens.
