to think my DH should be paid more for this job than...

right...

my DH and FIL started a rewiring job at the beginning of january. they were both out of work/self-employed electricians at the time. my DH is still doing this job but his dad got a full time job with a company about a week after the job started.

so, long story short the job is nearing completion and they should be getting paid from it this tuesday. i was talking to DH last night who said he woul be likely to come away with £600 on a 50/50 split of the proceeds.

my DH has worked on this job alone for the last 2 weeks, only having FIL help for the first week and one day since then. DH has also done all supply runs and paid for excess materials out of our pocket.

i dont want to be the petty person here but DH is still not with a stable job and FIL is now on a full time, £15per hour permanant contract. we are totally skint i am having to work tonnes of overtime to pay the bills until DH gets a job and the entire £600 would be swallowed up into the mortgage etc payment leaving us with nowt

AIBU to think the split of the proceeds should be reflecting the work put in?

YANBU. should be a fair split. can't he say something to FIL

Pikelit · 22/01/2010 19:38

YANBU.

PandaEis · 22/01/2010 19:47

i said to him to ask FIL if he would split it more fairly and he said he didnt want to i may need to sit down with him later again and see what he is going to do about it

YANBU but only your DH can really do anything about it.

Sit down with him and just say, I am worried you are not being treated fairly here. See if you can work out exactly how many hours each of them did, and add in any expenses, then he will have a figure to suggest to FIL.

Coldhands · 22/01/2010 19:54

It doesn't seem fair to split it 50/50 when your DH has done more and bought the materials.

But only he can sort it out with his DF.

PandaEis · 22/01/2010 20:03

QOFE that is what i suggested at first and he basically pooh-poohed it as a crap idea i knew it was a good one LOVE the name BTW

Yeah I have a DP who would rather lose out on a fair share of the money than actually work it out and then raise it with the other party! So you have my sympathy.

Can you do some rough calculations and then show him? He might get a better handle on it if it is written down in black and white.

PandaEis · 22/01/2010 20:29

yeah i might do this later TBH. i had suggested working out an 'hourly' rate and then each person would be paid fairly and whatever is left over could be split 50-50. he just looked at me like and moved the conversation on! he is scared to upset his dad to our detriment obv

yanbu
Is there perhaps other stuff going on around it?
Like FIL has helped DH out with something recently?
FIL secured the job? Previous jobs?
Because it doesn't seem fair.
I wonder if the FIL will refuse 50:50 when it comes to it anyway and just take a couple of hundred.

maxpower · 22/01/2010 20:43

YANBU

It's a shame that FIL hasn't worked this out for himself and sadi to DH he'll take a smaller share.

PandaEis · 22/01/2010 21:08

Paisley FIL did get the job but it was through a mutual friend who had already mentioned it to DH in december so they had decided to take it on together as it is a 2 person job. DH has been doing the majority of the 2 person parts of the job alone and this wasnt agreed until last minute as FIL got a job offer the end of the first week in jan which he obviously couldnt say no to. i just think it is unfair that despite DH doing the lions share of the work he is being shortchanged in payment as FIL still expects half the money
